View Full Version : 9 inch ring and pinion pattern
Hey do any guys feel like you could advise me on my ring pinion pattern on my 9 inch ford. I have the drive side good and the backlash set but the coast side pattern is right in the middle and very light. I can post pictures.
Just trying to figure out what I need to do or if it is good to go. Thanks guys .

Looks decent to me, maybe a touch low on the tooth. The most critical thing is that it is pretty well centered. It's when you have too much contact on either the heel or toe of the tooth you run into problems.
I will show your pics to our differential guy at work tomorrow and get his thoughts.
Get a couple of pics of the drive side if you can.
You have a better angle of the drive side?
Hope these are better

I don't even know wtf these pics are of. Transmission?
Looks good.
it's a ford, so you might as well not worry, they break down a lot, it's just natural to the manufacturer.
Yeah honestly it is in my mustang and the darn thing doesn't hardly get driven. Due idiots on the road I don't like the idea of wrecking it.

It's been 30 years, but that looks good. Anyway to preload it with a torque wrench and get a pattern of it?
Fords are shit so some say, but they are used in top Fuel racing all day long. Nodular iron but still the 9"

Ring & pinion gears in rear differential, final part of the drive train, before the wheels.
Tires are really the final part of the drivetrain! [shithitsfan]

Figure you being a Chevy guy, tires may have confused you, since there are 4 of them. Stick to the skies, sonny, stick to the skies.

Just had our differential guy look at your pics. He agrees, looks decent with a good pattern. Run it, check the noise level.
If a new ring and pinion keep the load light for the first couple hundred miles, give things a chance to burnish in.

tires and gas are the only thing my Chevy ever needs replaced!

tires and gas are the only thing ON my Chevy i can replace!
Sure you can
Thanks Burt ! That gives me a real piece of mind guess I just need to finish locktighting stuff and button it up and get back together. The I will try to keep it easy for the first couple miles as there used gears. Tell the diff guy thanks and Kick Brad in the teeth for me. Just kidding kind of about Brad.
Sure you can
Well I do struggle with the gas, I can never find the spot under the hood to fill it up. And blinker fluid...can't find that stuff anywhere!

Get a stuck knuten valve after you're out of warranty, GFL.
As long as it isn't another muffler bearing. Took a left handed 3mm torx to get thing out.

We have a crescent wrench at work that somebody engraved "Standard" and "Metric" on their respective sides.
I got a good giggle the first time I saw it.

I believe the correct term is "twisty wrench"!

While the pattern isnt too bad, Id pull .005 of pinion shim and see what you get. Looks like its sharp in the root of both coast and drive, which means its hitting the peaks on the pinion gear a bit. Id rather see a soft edge all the way around. Going off pics is different than in hand tho too. Ive had a few setups look pretty decent, and just a bit more or bit less shim, and suddenly, perfect.

Thanks for the info, never seen anything like that. I've always wished I could work on motors/cars without making the issues worse.

+1 on this.

Well these are .5 less shim from 17 to 12 on the shim personally it looks worse. Your verdict ?
