I picked up this 64-5 for a song the other day. It was a cop gun so it had a lot of holster ware and some dings, rifling is excellent. It has a true double action only hammer installed. You cant start to roll the action and interrupt it to bring it to full cock like some Ive seen.
I completely disassembled it, took the high spots off the big nicks with a file, sand paper and some scotchbrite, then bead blasted it to matte the finish.
The action on this thing is pretty darn smooth for a factory gun and the timing is excellent, it will make a nice hiking/truck gun.
Going to replace the grips and get a holster (probably kidex) made for cross draw.

Single action, hammer's bobbed, you mean DAO ? wonder what the serial # is, It a NY-1? Supposedly there were approximately 5500 ~ mfg. IF it's a NY-1 they were mfg late 80's - early 90's either way, nice score.

Yep... DAO. Playing legos with a 4yo + watching Lego movie + posting = Brain fart.
This isnt an NY-1, from what I have read they all got "NY-1" stamped on the frames somewhere. NY-1's were -5 guns from what Ive read, -5 were mfg'd from 88-98. Thats the extent of my "knowledge" on the subject :)
If your interested ill PM you the SN.

Nice catch! The smith & Wesson forum is the place to go for more details, history, info. They'll give you a mfr date too if you post the first part of the SN. CONGRATS!

Looks nice, good job!
I picked up a police trade-in (Victoria PD, Australia) S&W Model 10-11 from Buds about a year ago, and it has lots of holster wear too but the trigger is amazing! I keep considering doing something to the finish but at the end of the day, I just can't justify the cost. Maybe someday I will do something to it.
Buds has the pistol I bought back in stock again and I would love to pick up another one to have a nice pair, but not right now.

Nice job. Restoring an old S&W is on my project list as well - among other things.
I have the Supica and Nahaus S&W Catalog and can look up manufacture date if you want.

Thanks for the offer! Sent you a pm with the info, along with the info for my I frame .22LR thats next to it. Gives you an idea of the finish next to a blue gun. The lighting is LED.
Looks like its time for a new safe.

Nice, i bought a 64-5 and did the same thing with the bead blasting. It's a great shooter.
Drop in a lightweight rebound spring.

Nice! I dig the matte finish, especially on a gun that's going to get used.
I'm thinking about getting these off ebay.

Your latch is a little different than mine.
I'd love to pick up a 64 if I could get a good deal on one. A three inch barrel would be awesome if I could find one.

I'm always on the look out for odd barrel lengths.

Yeah the latch sure is different.
I had these grips around, they were on a 13-2 I bought and ugly as hell on it.
The 13 got wood grips and the 64 got these (the rubber ones that came on it were trashed)
I've shot close to 500 reloads so far! It eats up 158 lswc and 148 dewc and plated 125fp loaded to +p spec are good too!
