Who's using it? Who's convinced?

I get the lightweight aspect of it, but it's so far just been annoying to me. I don't want to have to keep track of several different mounting options, and since keymod isn't fully "out there" yet, all that means is I'm mounting pic rails on my keymod stuff.

With Magpul m-lok rails being probably cheaper and more simple to manufacture and more tacticool with the fanboys, is keymod doomed?

Don't you want your rifle to be covered in penis silhouettes?[ROFL1]

Sorry, just ripping on something for fun. Stole this from another site.

In all seriousness. I like the idea of smoother HGs. But then I've always been a fan of PRI's on my stuff. I liked the Apex HG's too. Keymods a good attempt to get a universal attachment method, but some of the other proprietary systems have been pretty good too. I guess its still one of those wait and see things.

You don't trust Keymod (which has been around for a few years and is basically a new standard mounting platform) to stick around, but are willing to throw your weight behind Magpul's knockoff Keymod which is supported solely by Magpul?

Personally, I like the keymod rails. Of course I tend not to stick a bunch of junk on my rifles so I really don't use the keymod feature much. I just like the fact that they are thin and light weight.

I do agree with the original poster that the aftermarket needs to step up and start making more accessory type things for it.

i love my new kmr rail ill be posting up a review tonight

old rifle 8.5 pounds loaded

new rifle 6.2 pounds loaded

almost all that weight was lost over the front of the rifle where it matters the most

Well it's not really a matter of "trust" or preference to me one way or the other. I just like to be able to swap stuff between guns from time to time, and was mostly avoiding the new options completely, until I had a keymod upper arrive that I wasn't expecting. I don't have any sort of preference, and don't know that I like either one. Just curious what everybody's thinking.

I do think it's interesting that Magpul lists Noveske as one of their M-LOK participating vendors though. (From back in April)

We should ask 10mm-man if he got a free Magpul hat when he signed up... ;)

10" or so keymod on a 16" carbine. Sucker is light and balanced. Like it so much will get another one to balance out my heavy barreled rifle, way too much mass up front right now makes it front heavy. As for accessories what is missing?

Things like flashlight mounts, vertical grips, bipod mounts, etc. There are a few out there but the selection and availability are limited.

I'm looking exclusively at keymod rails for my next build. Lighter, multiple big name companies are supporting it and making products for it, and it's popularity is only growing. I'd rather attach a small rail segment exactly where I need one if I have an accessory that requires it over having the whole thing covered. No reason not to.
I think I'm going to go with BCM's.

Keymod setups are great, in my opinion...lighter, better grip, etc.

@ ray1970. Belive it or not but I did not become aware of keymod until this summer. I dont think the word is out so the demand is low.

Keymod is the thing! I started selling them to few PD locally. They love the fact that they dont have to deal with quad rail on everything.

Not a fan of a quad rail weight or small pic rail pieces. Happy with my build but do need a new km light mount.

I have one and absolutely no clue about attachments etc. Picked a complete upper up in a deal, it was on there. Not that i'm in a rush to mount it, collecting dust with the other boat anchors, i'm looking at putting in my garage sale.

I like how narrow they can be where you don't have any attachments. I have a 13.5" keymod. Light and skinny. Easy to attach stuff where you want and clean and lean elsewhere. No regrets.

I'm glad it's catching on. The rails are silly. Even with the rubble covers the 4 sided rails are rough.

Keymod or not, that's a nice lower. :)

I love my 13" kmr. I definitely prefer to not have the extra weight and bulk of quad rails.

I like it. Don't really care about the attachments though. I'm not one to put anything on a rifle. It's smooth, lightweight, and does it's job. If they come out with something lighter I'll move to that.

AS the local parts whore I have gone through plenty of different hand guard rail systems including 4 different Keymod rails and now an M-Lok rail. I have gotten rid of the keymod rails for many different reasons and from that perspective completely my own observation and opinion below.

KEYMOD and M Lok concept; love the idea of a "universal mounting platform" to replace 1911. The process has been slow to come to fruitfulness.

I would not directly relate KEYMOD or M LOK to being a "lightweight" Rail, over an old school quad rail yes, but there has been plenty of lightweight rails before KEYMOD ever hit the market. This is about the "universal mounting" concept.

KEYMOD:

1.) Been out for 2 years, took FOREVER for accessories and modified attachments to hit the shelves. Now there appears to be a health flow of stuff.
2.) Manufacturing of KEYMOD is a lot more complicated to do, therefore you see a lot of that cost to the end user.
3.) KEYMOD does not work on "plastic" very well.
4.) If the manufacture took shortcuts to get the hand guard to market cheap it is not in perfect "spec" and accessories dont fit perfectly.
5.) I have noticed the KEYMOD holes are not very strong if there was a lot of stress put against the item. ( I had a vertical grip attached to a rail section the pulled out of the rail, bent the lip on the keymod hole) the manufacture replaced the handguard for free as a defect. Worried me a little because it was nothing I haven't done before, Vertical grip as a barrier stop.
6.) KEYMOD mounting is directional not reversible in design.
7.) Inside the rails it is designed to fit flush, there is no hardware sticking up restricting space.

M Lok:

1.) MAGPUL designed as direct competitor to KEYMOD, to be cheaper and to work on all their plastic MOE accessories.
2.) Completely open source, MAGPUL doesn't make a penny on it, they do control the concept and property rights.
3.) A lot more manufactures signed up for the spec to produce M LOK; Geissele, ALG Defense, Midwest industries, and SLR Rifleworks immediately came out with product within 4 months.
4.) Easier and cheaper to manufacture a M LOK compatible rail.
5.) Brand new and not a lot of accessories, other than "rails" and some stuff from SLR but with just rails that is not the point of a new standard.
6.) From the looks (will know soon) the hardware with M LOK sticks up into the rail when attached, but the mounting is reversible and appears to be stronger.

For all that, I personally went to a Geissele SMR MK1 and am completely happy, wife will still have a keymod because the specific rail is the lowest weight and she aint very big and my Geissele is 14oz and hers is under 8oz. :)
