Zerk fittings on my upper and lower control arms wont take grease (Is it usually just the fitting?)

On something like that is it usually just the fitting itself clogged or do I need to get one of those zerk fitting cleaners to clean out the crud in the joint. The Zerk fitting cleaners I see say use "light viscosity oil", what exactly do I need to be looking for if I have to go that route?

Just replace the fittings and try that?

If you can get an open end wrench on them, pull them off, soak them in mineral spirits till they are nice and clean and put them back on. If they don't come clean, replace them. If they aren't hard to get off, they aren't hard to replace.

I'd just put new ones on. They are very cheap.

Is the grease squirting out around where you have the gun on the zerk? The tips can loosen and not provide a good seal... We go through a couple a month at the shop 30+ zerks per truck the tips get heavy use

Replacing them is the route I am taking, I already bought new ones. But the primary curiosity I had is if that is the primary cause of such issues. I am guessing it is almost invariably unless the bushings or whatever else they might be on are excessively dirty and gunked up.

The Jeep has sat (as in did not move an inch for more than a year) so I was concerned that there might be a little drying out in a manner of speaking of the grease in the joints.

It will give me a good chance to put some 90° fittings on my ROKMEN rear arms as those are invariably a bitch to get to due to where they positioned the Zerk fitting.

Small drill bit, or other small metal object in a pinch, for the less than stocked repair person is a good zerk cleaner. 9/10 times it's dried grease combined with road grime. OR loose fitting on the grease gun

Like Kazoo said, dirt and old grease but I've also seen the check ball rust up from sitting. They do make caps for them that help keep some of the gunk out.

I always wipe mine off with a rag before and after greasing to try and keep the dirt out. Sometimes the ball does get stuck, usually a push with a screwdriver frees it.

A bit off topic but, Rokmen makes a good product and good guys over there. About to put their control arms on my truck. Nice looking ride
