Had my gastric bypass surgery today, they say it was very successful. Sure feel sore and tired though. And so begins a whole new episode of life, hopefully as a much smaller version of my former self. Tired of being a fatass, wanna see what normal feels like!

FWIW - my wife works for Kaiser Permanente, this surgery was totally FREE! Nice union benefit there.

Congratulations and good luck! I don't want to be a downer, but I know a guy that completely reversed the same process, don't be THAT guy, be true to yourself and dedicate to a healthy lifestyle.

Good luck my friend. Fighting the same battle, I need to loose some serious weight. Just can't seem to win.

Oh, I don't think I will. Hope not. After I made the decision to begin this journey, I lost 45 pounds on my own just by changing eating habits and having a physically active job. Over the years I've given up smoking cigarettes, then pot, then booze, then cigars, and now coffee. Haven't gone back on any of those. Sure miss my coffee though, but they say the caffeine can cause ulcers in this new stomach pouch. Plus I load it with sweet shit.

Congrats. I know someone who had the surgery once. Just about anything with real sugar in it would make them sick to their stomach. Not sure if it's that way for everyone. Hope it all works out for you.

Thanks! I figure I've had 58 years of stuffing my face with anything I wanted and 50 years of being fat. It's time to go down a different path in life. And I want to be able to drive my '56 Willys CJ5 when I get it done! I wouldn't have even been able to get in it the way I was.

Thank you all for the support and comments, it means a lot to me and I appreciate them! Good group o' folks here.

I'm home now, one night in the hospital is enough! Sore as hell, belly feels like a basketball. But a better life lies ahead. Looking forward to being normal! I'd love to try runnin' and gunnin' or a shoothouse someday. Driving my Willys, riding my Harley again, hiking in the mountains, hunting in the woods, flyfishing.....you know, Colorado man stuff.

Great news.

Diet and exercise, the exercise part is tough for many of us because we have so many other constraints on our time. We have to remember that we need to take a little time for ourselves and do a little workout, it'll make our futures brighter.

Not really sure, but 185 kinda sticks in my mind. That would be ~150lbs lost. Don't know if that's realistic or not. Basically just don't want to be fat anymore.

Used to be 5'10", probably a tad less these days. I reckon I "should" be in the 175-185 range, guess I'll figure it out when I get there.

That's the thing about the gastric bypass, it's damn hard to eat like shit! Gut can't tolerate sugars anymore, and I can't quite eat 1/2 cup of anything. Gotta concentrate on protein #1, carbs are dead last. Breads are out, takes up too much space.

Here's a pic of it, pretty drastic.....

Congrats on your achievement. Success is less about numbers and more about how you feel. You'll eventually find your sweet spot.

12-17-2014, 10:49
Awesome! As a few others have said, numbers aren't super important - Go until you really love the way you look and feel again!

The biggest change you can make is in what you eat. My wife is a personal trainer with a background in nutrition. If you don't eat right, you're wasting an awful lot of effort and money, but if you eat good portions of healthy and natural foods, you can go as far as you want to. We have a close friend who had the surgery 3 years ago. She went from 340 to ~150 (she's 5'11") and now she owns and operates a 24hr fitness gym in New Orleans. She just turned 50 last year. She stands on her soapbox all day long making it clear that we are the only thing limiting ourselves. Sometimes it takes something drastic like the surgery to jumpstart you, but then the ball is in your court and it's totally up to you how the game turns out. Keep it up, man! [Beer]

Congrats!! Been there, done that (without the surgery), and it's a great milestone! It's weird how our brain still thinks that we're as big as we used to be! I know what you mean about the clothes sizes (why I'm selling a couple of gun belts!). You have to get an entirely new wardrobe!

I'm familiar with the surgery, back in NY when I was in the medical field, I worked in the OR with a Dr. that was one of the first to do this procedure in the 80's.

Stick with it, keep to the required diet. Someday, I'll tell you a crazy story about a patient who went home and stuffed herself with pizza, needless to say she came in that night for emergency surgery!

It'll take time, but eventually your brain will 'catch up' with the "new you"! Again, kudos and congrats!!

Milestone achieved - hit the 100lb. mark!

Congrats! As of last week I was down 85 myself (at the ~5month mark), they expect me to lose another ~10 or so. Doesn't being thin (at least, relative to what we used to be) feel good?

Update - weight loss has slowed to a trickle, as they said it would, but is still going down. Current total is 135 lbs. gone (what my wife weighs, but SHE isn't gone), and I'm at 197. I can't even tell ya what decade it was when I was last under 200 lbs!

Kick ass! Keep it up! Pretty crazy to think that you were basically carrying around an extra person on you.
What really drove it home was going to work for Home Depot last June. I looked at the 50lb bags of sand and Quikrete, picked one up, and realized that I basically had THREE of those permanently attached to me! Everywhere I went, everything I did, every moment of my life, I had the weight of three 50lb bags of concrete mix hanging on me.

It was all I could do to pick ONE bag up, picking up three was out of the question. Yet I was carrying THREE of the fuckers 24/7/365. No wonder I have back, knee and foot problems. It was time for it to go. Got 15 left for that goal, and probably a little more after that.

Yeah, it's a big change. Sometimes change is good! I'm diggin' it. Wife doesn't want me to get any smaller than I am now, but that's TFB. I'm not doing this for her.

I once hiked to Hanging Lake with a 40lb weight vest on me and it was an eye opener. Everyone is quick to make fun of large people for being slow but it takes a lot of effort to move with extra weight on you.

Congrats again! Welcome to your new life.

I'd like to see the south side of 200 but I doubt that will ever happen. I'm too lazy.
