Amazing.
A very poignant reminder to ensure your firearms are safe to shoot at all times.
Both the shooter and the camera operator are especially lucky that they weren't injured.

LMAO... That's exactly what I was thinking.
Duck season... rabbit season.... duck season... rabbit season [LOL]
I was always under the impression that this type of thing was staged. It was discussed somewhere else on this or another board. Something about the barrel not splitting that way due to the rifling even if it was a fluted one. In the video you can see it's not fluted, so one would have to think it was set up to split that way. The plug that came out also stayed intact which looked hokey to me as well. BUT, I'm no expert and just looking at it with caution....
I would really like some gunsmiths to clear this one up or comment on it here....

Considering the circumstances, I would suspect he stuck his muzzle in some mud and got it lodged in the barrel somewhere before he took the shot. Rifle barrels typically peel open like a bananna when they go, but sometimes only bulge and split open if the obstruction is really wedged in there like a squib half way down the tube and of a lower caliber. The rifle looked like a Browning A-bolt, and was probably a mag caliber, slow powder, but a ton of it.
Go back and look at the vid and you will see the thing that flew off the rifle was the tip of the forestock. It probably gave at the sling swivel mounting point and everything in front of it blew off when the barrel peeled back.
What I found interesting was how he throws the rifle down after the ka-boom like it was a venomous snake about ready to take another shot at him.
Just another reason for muzzle condoms when hunting...

I have seen a few barrels that look that that one. Peeled like a banana. To bad for him. Luck for him his lugs didn't give way and send the bolt rearward.
Bet the game got away from this hunter.
very lucky he didn't get severly injured

I've used muzzle condoms, ballons, etc. but what I use now and works great (and is very cheap) is a small piece of electrical tape over the end of the barrel, trimmed to a small circle so as not to have anything to snag on. I put another 2" piece of tape on the back of my FRS radio as "backup", but usually 1 application will last the entire season - or at least until I get a chance to use the rifle.

I like to use butcher tape. Holds up in the cold and also gets used in the butchering process if I'm lucky
