I am not surprised. Most Americans do not even understand the significance of the salute. It is more than just a greeting or ritual, it is symbolic of mutual respect for our men and women in uniform. When a subordinate renders a crisp salute the very least you can do is render the same in return, to do otherwise is disrespectful to the rank you wear and the position you hold. You are leading those men and women, you must lead by example and show respect for their service. To put it in terms that explains it best, as the leader you serve your people first, then tend to your needs afterwards.

Of all the egregious things this man has done as president this is probably the most minor (and really isn't wrong).

The President is not a member of the military and as such returning a salute is arguably a breech of protocol. So whether it's a proper salute or a flippant one with a coffee in his hand is a non issue. The tradition of returning the Marines' salutes while getting off Marine 1 is a Reagan era invention (not long standing tradition).

But hell, if this is what we can impeach him on, why not. :D

I believe the reason Reagan and both Bushes returned salutes was that they appreciated what the gesture meant and the men who were giving them the salutes. Clinton and Obama don't care and never will care so they were and are half-assed about it. I wouldn't get eaten up over it because service members have other ways to understand the Clintons and Obamas don't give two figs for us, our traditions, or the Constitution we have sworn to protect.

Again, I don't want to defend this evil evil creature, but at least now he gives a half ass salute ... in the past he's just ignored them.

Under our system the military is strictly under civilian control. So while the Commander in Chief is the leader of the military he is still a civilian. That is the design. Civilians are not required to return salutes (although many do as a sign of respect ... and yes I get it, this joker doesn't respect).

*shudder*

People forget that in 2008, Obama was the MODERATE alternative to the RADICAL Clinton ... honestly she'll be worse than Obama.

Are you making a joke about GW's air national guard not counting? George HW Bush was a naval aviator in WW2.

Nope, no joke at all. I didn't remember if both of them served or just one did.
In that case I stand corrected. Thanks for pointing that out.[Beer]

That's all well and good, but if obummer doesn't care, he shouldn't salute. Or rather if he can't take the time to do it properly, don't do it at all.... imo, saluting with a coffee in the hand is basically a "yeah yeah f*** you" gesture. As CIC, there's no excuse for not knowing the significance of it.

Ah ok no worries either way, wasn't about to explode or anything, was just curious! I had to go and confirm about HW, and I wasn't aware that Reagan had served!

I completely understand from a veteran's point of view why this is upsetting to see our CIC do. As some have already mentioned, yes, this is not "required" by the POTUS to return a salute, but rather something done out of respect. Which I think many people have forgotten, Obama does not respect our country, our troops, nor what this country was founded on. So for those who are going back & forth on this, I'll just say this; If he's going to salute, do it right or don't do it at all. If he's not going to salute, then understand that is his prerogative and not a requirement. Obama is a socialist POS and nothing he does can or will surprise me anymore.

I remember this. He had both hands full, which even if he were subject to customs and courtesies, he would be exempt from a salute. However not only did he give this, but after securing the dog he returned to the marine and rendered a proper salute as an apology.
