View Full Version : Now it's gone full circle- build an AK in 300 Blackout?

Ok, so AR guys were jealous of the penetration power (ooh, innuendo!) of the 7.62x39 round, so they tried to get it to work in ARs...
too much taper made the mags unreliable
bolts were weaker due to less meat in the lugs
dirty ammo gummed up DI rifles
so somebody invented 300 Whisper, and then 300 Blackout- imitating (and yes, improving) the 7.62x39 round ballistics.
People explored the suppressed firearm capabilities a lot more (since .308 bullets are more available & varied than .310 when reloading 7.62x39
AKs have been available in .223/5.56 for a while, nice to have variety that can shoot the same cartridge as your AR, right?
You can even get magwells and mod the rifle to take AR mags!
so now we have gone full circle:
http://ak-builder.com/index.php?dispatch=products.view&product_id=30555
a barrel to convert your .223/5.56 AK into .300 Blackout! Granted, 1-in-10 rifling isn't ideal for subsonic rounds, but a suppressed AK won't near as quiet as an AR (unless you suppress the gas piston system, too)
But you can now build an AK to fire the round that was designed to imitate the round the AK was originally designed for![ROFL2][LOL]

Take 2 ar's and call us in the morning. I'd stick to the AR platform if i went with a 300 cartridge.

Yep. Rather spend my time and money shooting than wrenching on my guns.
On the other hand, more options for those who like it.[emoji106]

One would think with all of the aggrevations a 5.56 Kalishnakov platform can be, a 300 would be just as bad if not worse.

This does remind me of my idea for a 22 conversion kit for an M107. So you can practice shooting your .50 for cheap. [facepalm]
I like my AK in 300 and also my AK in 223. And using clear/opaque mags it looks cool. CDI.
I already load 223 and 300 Whisper and have a ton of 223 AK mags.
To try and find non-steel core/magnetic 7.62x39 ammo can be difficult and expensive when you do.
Finding reloadable 7.62x39 brass can be difficult and expensive when you do.
As a reloader, I am ahead $$$ wise, accuracy and ammo availability wise.
If I didnt reload, 300 Whisper in an AK or an AR would not make much sense.
In a nutshell, I did it because I can.
I'm still waiting on a 300 blkout conversion for a Cricket.

left or right hand action ?
I like a challenge, let's go with left-handed.
Just noticed this thread is in the 7.62x39 Club section. Ha!

I think you summed up the only reasons this makes any sense in a nutshell... it's still ironic... What twist rate is your 300 Blackout AK?
I've got a 5.56 build I'm working on (well, it's sitting in the garage waiting for me to get to it) based on a Tantal- doing it as a Beryl clone, with an AR magwell.
I don't have 5.56 AK mags, I'd like to keep 5.56 in PMAGs, and 7.62x39 in AK mags... I've got a stockpile of Yugo brass 7.62x39, and my range doesn't care if I use steel either... I've got dies for 7.62x39, and collecting boxer brass when I can (can get boxer brass ammo for $0.50 a round)
Then there is this stack of PPSH drums I bought before the July 1 deadline that I'd like to do something with... [Coffee] Blowback 2XTM in 9x23mm is the leading plan right now.

That's what I thought the first time I saw that... Its just modifying it back to an original AK that takes AR mags. Oh well... People will buy it.
The only positive I see is that it could be beneficial if and when there is an importation ban on x39 ammo, you can then still have the ballistics of the original round.

Or for reloading you could just buy a bunch of berdan primers lol

Decapping is still a pain with Berdan primers, then there is the lack of extensive bullet availability in .310 as compared to .308...
