View Full Version : Some of you may remember that Jeep rollover on Black Bear a few weeks back...

So they were videotaping inside the jeep. Check out the video.
We all make mistakes, so I wouldn't want to fault the driver, but you can clearly see what happened. I feel for the guy.

If you are not familiar with the trail or have not seen the pictures, he came pretty close to a long, fatal drop. Sounds like everyone is ok though.

Why was he doing that?

Wow I've been up that pass. That's crazy don't know what he was thinking doing that. Glad everyone is okay

Why was he doing that?

There's a thread on one of the 4wheel boards - the guy that was right behind him said the jeep was pretty much brand new, and I assume a new driver. I guess at this point in the trail, it's hard to see anything other than the hood, and he just let his left side walk up too high and flopped. Easy to critique from here, but I've caught myself in a dumb situation I should have known better than to get caught in before too. Plus it has to be hard to keep your eyes on the road with that trail and those views. Seems like every few years somebody rolls, and it's usually a more fatal result. Glad this guy and the passenger are ok.

Oh I've rolled a vehicle just as good being dumb before, and have even been in a similar situation. It's easy to see wanting to stay away from the edge.

I guarantee I have rolled vehicles over WAY more than anyone on this site, and even I say what in the hell was that idiot doing? That made no sense.

I think he was just trying to stay away from that edge (and understandably so!).

Trying to flex it out and ride the bank, me thinks. Some dummy was doing the same thing in a stock SR5 on the way down Mt. Herman Road (not even a wheeling trail, mind you) and rolled his ride. I yanked the truck away from the bank so we could flip it back over.

You guys are insane. Looks like fun, but insane. The spouse use to sky dive, Spent a lot of time consuming bloody marys(it was always a sunday jump) waiting for her to hit. The reverse image is seeing this speck suddenly fill your vision, not this light weight guy.

Ahhhh, ya big weenie! Skydiving was the coolest, most fun thing I ever did in my life, until that hard landing that fucked up my back.....

And Black Bear is one of the reasons I converted my '56 Willys CJ5 I'm restoring from 9"x1.5" brakes to 11"x2", with a dual chamber mc and all new parts/lines/hoses, and had Bert drill holes in the drums for heat and water dissipation! Early Jeeps had notoriously piss-poor brakes. The 11" system is far better by orders of magnitude.

His visibility had to be at least as good as the cameras and it could see just fine that he was not on the road. That is why I dont like going with inexperienced drivers. They need to learn their vehicle. how wide it is and where their tires are. Lucky it didnt roll once more and kill them all. Bet nobody want to ride with him again.

I can't believe how lucky they are that it stopped where it did and didn't carry on all the way to the bottom. Glad they are okay

Was up there a few days after the roll. We couldn't figure how he rolled at that spot, but saw window glass on the trail and assumed he got to far left. The road in this area is 1.5 times the width of this jeep. No need to hug the left.

We guessed he was not paying attention and this video confirms it.

Complete driver error. No hidden drops, no hidden obstacle, clear vision of the road, a vehicle very capable of handling the trail...

Wether it was divine intervention or dumb luck, a larger boulder kept the jeep from rolling further. 5 ft left or right and it would have landed in telluride.

Damn. I thought it would be a video of a Jeeper videotapping a black bear and rolled over the bear.

Drug and alcohol test on the driver?

Now I wonder if the USFS will head out there and blast, like after the drunk fool rolled on Blanca a long while back and doomed "Jaws 2"

Holy crap! Me and my buddies used to go wheeling a lot. It's not for me anymore for fear of something like that happening. I'm guessing Divine intervention.

Hope not. Looked like driver error all the way.

Who can spot the FJ40 at the bottom of Tomichi Pass?

It is a county road not a FS road. There really isn't anything to blast, the road is flat where it happened.

Derp.

Noob with more money than brains and it's apparent, no driver skills.

I mean, it's easy to learn WTF your tires are - feel, senses, SPOTTER. WTF is the passengers excuse for not spotting him?

I've done similar in a full size so I have no pity for this dipstick.

Glad everyone is OK just the same.
