View Full Version : My first rant thread
I am driving along Kipling this morning minding my own damn business, and I look in the rear view mirror. I have a cruiser with its lights on so I pull over. The LEO asks me. “do you see your windshield?” I am thinking to myself, well, since I made it here from Conifer...um yes, I believe so...dumbass!; but I just looked at her in disbelief....” My only comment was, “you pulled me over for a cracked windshield(?); really, that is ridiculous!” I don't think she liked being told that this is ridiculous, but really...what the hell??? Who the fuck pulls somebody over for a cracked windshield? Seriously, what the fuck??? It would be easier to count the number of cars in Colorado that don't have cracks in their windshield. Every fucking car in this state gets pelted with rocks every damn time it is put on these pot hole infested highways of this fucking place not to mention the rock quarry trucks coming off 285 onto 470 every morning. If the traffic stop wasn't stupid enough, I couldn't find my new insurance cards right away; she left and announced triumphantly that “I am writing you a ticket!” Well, good for you; don't hurt yourself! I found the envelope with the new cards and declarations when she was gone. When she came back and I presented the insurance information, she wouldn't take it and told me she already printed out the ticket (well isn't that too fucking bad), that I should just follow the process to submit proof as described in the ticket. Really? ...what makes you think that I am going to accept a citation that is invalid you dumb bitch? I guess it is too damn difficult to void the incorrect ticket and print out a new ticket that is valid. Damn, that is a lot of fucking work! I hate to tear you away from your important mission of eliminating the city of cracked windshields...I mean that egregious shit needs to stop now. Seriously, of all the lazy ass stupid shit. Really, are you really going to issue a citation that you know is false? You dumb fuck!!! So, I get to work and fax the proof of insurance, but I am just fuming at this point and called the department. Yep, she was suppose to take the information and correct the ticket. She now has an IA officer doing an inquiry. What a stupid windbag!!! I am generally very respectful toward LEOs, but this whole thing was really fucking stupid. Of the 1001 other bad things going on in Lakewood at this moment in time, why the hell would you stop me for a cracked windshield; what a complete waste of everybody's time.

Don't look at it as a ticket. Look at it for a safety awareness reminder.

Awesome. Although I expect nothing to come of it.
I didn't even know you could get a ticket for that (but should have).
Windshield on my CTD has been cracked for at least 9-10 months. I guess I only drive it a few times / week, but to your point, you can easily go through a windshield/year in this state, and at one point I did.
And I claimed them all. And got dropped by my insurance. (Whoops!) [Coffee] So much for those "free" windshields. So, I pay cash now, but with winter around the corner I figured I'd wait until NEXT summer. Whoops again.
Don't look at it as a ticket. Look at it for a safety awareness reminder.
I feel safer already; I get to pay $250 for a wind shield that will, by Christmas, look the same as the one I have right now. Damn, I can't get any more safe then that!

My wife got pulled over in our 2007 Charger, former Colorado Highway Patrol cruiser we bought at auction...
They mentioned a crack in the windshield, and she pointed it out that the CHP sold it to us that way.... so it must be ok, right?
She did NOT get any ticket that day...

I am hoping to trap her in a lie. Basically the IA officer said that she could have intended to amend the ticket from the department. If so, that is her out. Well, she never took the new information from my hand and inspected it. I really hope they change the ticket because then they did so without verifying the information at the stop. I would love for them to explain this mess when we go to court, because I have every intention of bringing up the lack of procedure with the judge.
Yeah, my CTD is also cracked along with every other vehicle I own except my collector cars. It is pretty much impossible. I usually get hit with a rock on 470 that will generally spread before I get home so I don't have a chance to repair it. Unless it is a starburst that covers a large area, it doesn't really matter.

Do you feel like had you had your insurance card at the ready she'd have not given you a ticket?
I agree completely. Especially in winter with the defrost on the window? Those chips spread past the length of the $1 bill almost immediately.
Mine goes from 1/3 of the way up on the driver side, across about half-way.
I just don't see fixing it as we slide into fall.
Edit: I'll be curious what a judge would say. Any judge who has lived here for > 1 winter (and that would be all of them) has likely replaced a windshield or three themselves. If it were me, I'd be shocked and throw it out, unless it truly were a starburst/spiderweb.

I had a motorcycle cop pull me over for loud pipes to give me a biker tax...
I had the same thing with the insurance card- found it in my wallet after he started writing the ticked, so d-bag gave it to me anyway..
I also didn't have a motorcycle endorsement on my license at the time (my bad)
I used it as leverage when I went to court (well, to meet assistant DA to plea bargain, like they do all tickets in COS) to get all 3 thrown out- since I had Ins, had my endorsement by that time, and told him the bike came with those pipes, and I'd put a baffle in them after the stop.
The baffles have since fallen back out- what a PITA keeping my bike quiet.. [Muaha]
ETA: we need peel-off layers on windshields here, like they use in NASCAR [Coffee]

I was getting a ticket from the moment I said this was ridiculous. For some reason, I couldn't keep my mouth shut today; I restated the ridiculousness as she left and also mentioned the ticket was idiotic...probably doesn't help me much. The windshield has a few cracks; it was hit with numerous rocks which happens more frequently then I can count. From the Morrison exit on 285 and 470, I get hit all the time; the fronts of my cars that I use for commuting are all beat to hell. There aren't any starburts or spider webs; nothing that would prevent my sight. If there were, I think I am smart enough to figure that out on my own.

I agree 100% with the windshield thing. Unless it actually is hindering your view, which I've seen a few times, it should be a courteous "hey, just letting you know..." kinda thing, sort of like with tail lights and license plate lights. But still, pretty good rant. I give it a 9/10. Plenty of visuals, colorful language, and dammit all, it seems you lost your cool as well (which is why the ticket is not a surprise).

The next time you need the police I hope you remember everything you just posted.
I also hope you get full penalty tickets every time you get pulled over from this day forward.
You are the most disrespectful person I've ever seen. I have dealt with convicted felons that have more respect than you do.
You deserved every bit of the ticket you got. You broke the law and now you're crying like a baby that you got caught. Had you been RESPECTFUL from the start you probably would have gotten off with a warning.

Is having a cracked windshield enough of a violation for an officer to pull you over? I can see how they could tack on a "Cracked Windshield" citation along with something else that they already pulled you over for. But is it legal for them to pull you over for only a cracked windshield?

Two things... Detectives are generally the ones that work on those bigger crimes...
Second, if you did a survey of police around the country they would probably (very likely) tell you that some of the biggest busts and leads they get come from simple traffic stops.... Traffic stops for stuff like cracked windshields....

(1) Uniformed police officers, at any time upon reasonable cause, may require the driver of a vehicle to stop and submit such vehicle and its equipment to an inspection and such test with reference thereto as may be appropriate. I also didn't get a ton of blame for others.
It did sound like a rant where an officer had the time to bust him for, and we can disagree on this: a petty "crime" that probably 1/3 of all Coloradoans are guilty of at any time, but not have the time to follow the procedure.
I wouldn't have reacted the same way, but I certainly get frustrating days.

According to FBI statistics property crimes have dropped by 42% since 1992. Violent crime has dropped by 49% since 1992. Government never shrinks. This is a symptom of a larger problem. The government is in the revenue generation business. They are finding less and less productive bodies to steal money from. So, they have revenuers out collecting money. This really isnt about cops (well not the guy wearing the uniform on the street). this is about corrupt government getting into the pockets of Americans anyway they can.
Out here in oil country, you can buy a windshield Monday and literally have it broken in several places before Friday. If you drive, you will be breaking the law.
And yes, most LEO I know, will simply give you a warning and tell you to get it fixed. Thats great. But, you still would have to replace your windshield weekly. That isnt going to work.
Honestly, I'm not getting the same impression. He clearly knows the windshield is broken and has admitted as much.

^^^THIS. Also, as the OP posted, there are far more cracked windshields on the road in this communist run state than there are without. As a former LEO, I can tell you that pulling someone over for a cracked windshield is a waste of fucking time. The only time I would ever consider using that as PC for a stop, the vehicle would most likely be a "warrant wagon". My guess is, she was pissed, on her monthly, man-hater, etc. Regardless of the fact that it's against the law, aside from CSP, I don't know any municipal or county agencies whose officers use that as PC for a traffic stop. Cracked windshield IMO, falls under that same BS law as; equal brightness for both headlights crap. Yes, you can get pulled over if one headlight is brighter/dimmer than the other. Complete BS. So, this rant I give you a 9/10 and Fred needs to CTFD. That is all.
I had a cop write me up for no proof of insurance because I gave him an expired card. When he alerted me to that fact, I found the correct one and he just said "Oh I already wrote it. Just go to court and show it and they'll throw it out". When I went to court, I told the DA and he couldn't have cared less.

Well, there's spirit of the law vs letter of the law. If you are such a hard ass about every little violation, you deserve a hard time once in a while. There are also things called chickenshit tickets and unless that windshield is shattered and obscuring vision, writing a ticket for the violation is chickenshit.

I would agree with you both that the stop was kind of silly. But, it was her choice to pull him over. None of us really have any right to question her actions. And, MED never said just how broken his windshield is... So for all we know it could be destroyed and dangerous.
The ticket would have been silly as well, had he not been a flaming douche bag.

You're right. Reading it again, it didn't really come out as intended. You can question anything you want. Explaining what I meant is difficult. I'll find the words eventually.

Getting pulled over for a cracked windshields a fishing expedition ...
she was hoping to find more ( like the no insurance tix she thought she had ... or maybe get lucky and get more like a warrent.. )
Exactly the same reason I got pulled over last time I got pulled over....
No Turn signal .. monday night of a 3 day holiday weekend. he was looking for a drunk not a no turn signal ticket. as soon as I wasn't drunk the officer basically just grumped at me for not signing the back of my registration handed me a pen then sent me on my way .

As a civil servant myself, I'm going to agree with you. If the people we serve, are never allowed to question us, what kind of a society do we live in?

Pretty much what it was with MED too. He probably would have been sent on his way as well had he not been a prick.

Actually, there are times on our team when we decide who will be the DA (Designated Asshole) during a meeting in order to play a sort of "good cop, bad cop" game with other departments...
yes, within the same company... it's fucking pathetic.

Ya know, it's funny, I'm generally not an asshole in person unless it's warranted..... But I can say that I would 100% be an asshole if this happened in person.
DMV tells you (YEARS AGO) that you don't have to sign the registration. Cops tell you that you must. Similar to how police tell people "this is a no fault state" and finish the rest of that sentence with something along the lines of being at fault for an accident; when that is not at all to what "no fault" refers.
Mr. Fred, the whole point of a rant thread is, well, you know to rant; I suppose if I need worry about the PC police I will avoid writing them in the future How do you know I was a prick, where you there? I complained because the ticket as written was invalid due to the insurance violation, and the LEO's unwillingness to correct it. The IA officer already said this didn't follow procedure and they are correcting the ticket. Lastly, getting pulled over in rush hour traffic for something like a cracked windshield is ridiculous.

I'm as light as possible given my body weight..... [Coffee]

Monky is correct they removed the box from the reg because it's a great way for identity theft not only do they have your name and address but a copy of your signature.
which is why mine was never signed. ( and got oddly lost after that encounter with the cops)

42-4-201. Obstruction of view or driving mechanism - hazardous situation
Blah blah blah Shit that doesn't apply....
(4) No vehicle shall be operated upon any highway unless the driver's vision through any required glass equipment is normal and unobstructed.
I just LOVE [Sarcasm2] laws that are vague enough to apply to 1000's of situations- but that's not any officers fault- I'll fault CO legislature for that.
And that's why I never drive at during a sunrise or sunset, or in bright sun after it has rained. It's illegal.
Exactly what I was thinking... or dead bugs "you want I should wash the dead bugs off your windshield" - Elwood Blues, Blues Brothers
I suppose stopping on the side of the road until the conditions pass would be preferable?
What if the crack is on the passenger side? does that apply (it didn't when my wife was pulled over, but the "CHP sold us the car like that" pretty much shut that down...
And even though you say he understands that he broke the law he still insisted on being a disrespectful douche bag to the cop.... Right....
My windshield is cracked too. But, I won't be a sissy and cry about it if I get a ticket for it... But, since I'D flash my badge when I get pulled over, I probably won't get a ticket for it anyway...
FIFY.. but in your defense, everyone has bad days- it's how you deal with other people that make a difference.. I try to treat everyone with respect even when I'm "grumpy"
I had a cop write me up for no proof of insurance because I gave him an expired card. When he alerted me to that fact, I found the correct one and he just said "Oh I already wrote it. Just go to court and show it and they'll throw it out". When I went to court, I told the DA and he couldn't have cared less.
Yeah, I would have been annoyed to go there JUST for that, but in my case there was at least 1 charge I took responsibility for (no MC endorsement).. so I used the lack of procedure as leverage, and the Asst. DA realized I could was right, and rather than push a bad case, he let it all go- but I was polite & friendly in the process

He bitched to the department about the no proof of ins violation when he did in fact present her with proof. The fact that she didn't revise it was just her being spiteful and retaliatory for him being "rude". Spite is something LEO'S don't have the luxury of having. She did, and he reported it. Nothing wrong there.

Funny you should mention that...
In the 6 years I've had that ability it's never been ME that brought it up...
Stop #1: State Trooper asked me where I work. (Speeding. First time ever stopped for it. 50 in a 40 right at the start of HWY 6 off HWY 93.)
Stop #2: State Trooper knew me from work. (Speeding. 73 in a 65 on I76.)
Stop #3: Brighton PD Officer knew me from work. (Being in the left lane for no apparent reason at 330AM on my way to work.)
Stop #4: My old SGT stopped me. (Says it was for not signaling when I changed lanes. It was really just to fuck with me.)
Stop #5: Gilpin SO asked where I work. (Crossed the center line on HWY 119 coming home from Black Hawk. Thought I was drunk. I don't drink.)
The last time I was stopped was over 3 years ago...

Using that logic you could argue the entire ticket was spiteful...
I agreed that she should have fixed the ticket. But it was in a post I deleted that had more off topic stuff than on topic stuff.
My thing is. The whole thing would have gone away if he would have just been polite...

I do think the entire ticket was spiteful. However, the broken windshield ticket was an actual violation and valid ( aside from the vague and loosely translated law) and the no proof violation was not valid.

I never said I was perfect. And I've never once bitched about being stopped. Every time I got stopped (except the SGT one) I was totally in the wrong. I knew I was and I admitted I was. I also never came on here and cried like a baby about it. I didn't tell any of the cops they were ridiculous for pulling me over. I didn't argue with any of them. I was polite.

I've gotten two tickets in the 14 years I've been driving. 1 when I was 19 failure to stop completely at a stop sign, and another 1-4 mph over the speed limit 2-3 years ago. Needless to say I was relatively upset about the last ticket. Neither time did I give the officer a reason above the moving(or not moving) violation.
