Not going to say what range or what kind of rifle because as far as I know the owner has not claimed it yet. So I and my son were the first at the range this morning and after shooting by ourselves for a few minutes I look down the stands and I can't believe my eyes. It's a nice like new condition rifle, worth about $1,700.00 retail, just sitting there by it's lonesome. Gave it to the range officer once he showed up and will send an email to the board of the range. I was there until about 10:30 and no one know showed up freaked out looking for it. Crazy. [panic]

Sounds like a burner rifle.

Sent an email to President of the Range and told him it was with the range officer for the day. Update once I know more.

You have the RO do a Bg check before handing it over?

I did mention with the new laws he may have a problem. I didn't take possession only check to make sure it was safe.

You'll have a chance to explain everything while on the stand [emoji12] JK

A couple years ago, I found a really nice, like brand new, rather high end digital camera (with no ID what so ever) in our local Dairy Queen parking lot and no one else was in the entire lot. Took it into the DQ and told them to give it to their Manager and in case the owner comes back for it, be sure to get his/her name and phone number, as I want to check with them and if no one claims it within a couple weeks, I want to be the new owner. Waited two weeks and went back to the DQ to check the status and NO ONE knew anything about it - zero!! That DQ went out of business about two years ago.

More unintended consequences of the law.

Can you imagine the CF this could turn into?

You are showing your true character by being righteous and honest about the rifle and trying to get it back to it's proper owner.

I've found this to be a trait that is common amongst the many good people at this board..........it's really cool, actually.

You think about it could be a conflict here. Here just me and my 7 year old son alone on the range and I see it. For safety reasons, when around a unknown weapon it is my duty as a father and responsible gun own to know it's condition, right? Do I break a law by checking it? BTW once I knew its condition I left it there and waited for the range to officially open to the public and inform said RO.

Safety first.

But now the RO has possession. Can he maintain it for < 72 hours before turning it into who, the police? Has he violated any law by taking possession of it? Did he take possession of it from you? It's an unsecured weapon for cryin out loud. I guess you're supposed to stay away from such a dangerous military ghost gun assault style 30 magazine clip laser guided heat seeking death machine and just let the po po handle it?

The whole thing is just bonkers.

You bring up an interesting point. If it has a mag with more than 15 rounds what do you do about the magazine? Much like if you wanted to lend out a G17 and all you had was 17 rounders. You could legally transfer the gun, not the mags. I found a pistol once in Five Points and called the man. I was told guns are not finders keepers. Seems even after a wait the man gets to keep it. You'd be better off finding cash.

The less said the better. You should get it back before the 72 time line. Be surprised if the RO is aware of that dangerous loophole.

If it's the range I'm thinking of, they have a very good record of being way above board and will look hard for the actual owner.

she must have been cute, can't think of much else that would cause me to forget a rifle at the range.

Back in Feb or so I went to the range. Put a few hundred rounds of ammo through everything I had, but only shot about half of what I brought. I realized I wasn't having any fun. I packed up and went home. Later that evening I'm unpacking the car in the garage, and I realize I'm short a gun! [panic]

I realize I bagged up the AK and put it behind me in the storage rack, but then packed up the Garand and went home. I called them as soon as they opened the next morning and said "This may be the most embarrassing thing I've ever said, but..." and he cut me off and told me to come by and they have it there. Fortunately they realized it was mine. Thought it odd that a tacticool AK-74 was in a bag with a bunch of enbloc clips![ROFL2]

I left my staple gun at the range a few weeks ago.

Left a stand and steel target at the range a while back. Of course it was all shot full of holes when I saw it again.

It's like a bunch of rednecks shooting road signs at a MEMBERS(and guests) ONLY club fer cryin out loud.

I could see how it could happen, at least temporarily. I was shooting with my daughter, and had one of my pistols in a cheap clip on holster on my belt....bent down to help my daughter shoot her .22, we both walked back to the bench and I looked back across the range and was like "hey, someone dropped a pistol in a holster". Upon closer inspection, I realized I recognized said pistol [facepalm]

I forgot 2 AK Steel mags coupled together one fall/winter day at the range and went back after the snow finally melted and there were right where I left them, just rusty-er

I guess the guy showed up later that day and claimed it. His story was that he at first thought someone stole it out of his car because there was no way he would have left it at the range. Makes me wonder if the guy locks his car with guns in it.

wow- just WOW... just bad situational awareness all around...

this whole thread has made me happy that when I get back from my range, If I'm missing anything it means I have to just jump on the ATV again... [Coffee]

my neighbors are moving out we'll see how my new neighbors are, maybe I'll need a "range day" to break them in...
Right after Halloween we have a tradition to dispose of pumpkins that involves Tannerite.

PM me if you're interested, but I'll have to either know you, or you'll need a reference I know personally... we're not a commercial range- so no charge, volunteer ROs, and limited crowd
(and it's a trek from Denver Metro... but we have fun)

For those of you that have admitted to leaving something behind (aka "being forgetful"...),
there is a MUCH, MUCH, worse problem you are going to have to 'fess up to ....

...you now have to face the fact that YOU ARE GETTING OLD !!!!
