Pilot won't stay lit in my older furnace. I'm looking and most places offer "universal" ones. How will I know if it will fit? Any tips?

Homedepot sells Honeywell thermocouples. Buy a 36" long t couple. As long as it's not a thermopile all furnace i can think of use a right hand thread t couple. Clean the pilot hood with a soft wire brush, blow out the pilot tubing from the gas valve side(disconnected) with light compressed air(15-20 psi). Reassemble and test for leaks with pilot on only with soap bubbles. Good luck it's an easy process just take you time and make sure everything goes back in the same angle and direction. If the pilot hood is point the wrong way or angle I could make a big boom.

You betcha. I'm glad it worked and I'm glad you were able to save some money.
Glad I saw this post. Reminds me I should pull out my flame sensor thingy and clean it with some scotch brite before the cold weather sets in and I have to start running the furnace. Probably ought to change the filter while I'm there too.
