So hopefully I should be getting my Rock River kit sometime in the near future, and I'm thinking about doing a piston conversion. I've searched on here, but haven't found much about it. What is the general consensus on doing a conversion? What brand of conversion kits are better, and which ones should I stay away from?

Can't speak to any other conversion than the PWS and it kicks much ass. This isn't a must have conversion to the AR platform, but it is a solid evolution. I went as far as going with the PWS FSC556 break as well as a good rail system and just had it all done at once by Rainer Arms.

Have to admit, it's the AR that's getting shot a lot more than the DGI AR's these days.

You should have bought the lower and purchase the piston upper that comes w/ the rail system. As most hand guard rails won't fit.

I'm running a Adams Arms Kit. I would look at a CMMG kit as well.

Make sure you get everything aligned or you may get a little binding. I had that issue with mine, but it was easy to fix.

Most manufacturers (of the piston conversion sets) list what rails are compatible and the major of the better ones (LaRue, Daniel Defense, Troy) work just fine without modification.

If you're just planning on a conversion, PWS is well respected. I believe, but could be mistaken, that LWRC will do a conversion.

Adams Arms has a list of HG that work work with modification or won't work at all. I am using the DD 9.5 FSP.

Why isn't there a filter of some sort out there that one could put in the gas line? That would be a cheap alternative to the piston kit that they should have had from day one (IMHO).

Typical applications do not filter exhaust gasses. Most applications utilizing filters are intake filters. I suppose you could do it, but the amount of time and time between replacement would be the downside for end users. But if you could convince the market to go in that direction you would be rich, if you were the filter supplier

unless you have a sbr and suppressed you arnt doing yourself any favors. Get a good bcg and your gtg. Put the extra money into ammo.

I guess you'll know when it's time to change it out when your AR switches to single action.

Yup, what he said. I just build a midlength gas rifle and when I shoot it, it shoots great, but I find myself wishing for my PWS instead.

Ok. Not to hijack this thread, but are there any advantages to Direct Gas Impingement systems over a piston type? My only guess is simplicity. Fewer moving parts....

True in-line operation. Piston applies force to the top of the bolt carrier, which in some instances has led to carrier tilt and wear on the upper and/or buffer tube, while DI acts directly on the centerline of the bolt/carrier combination.

I like the gas piston idea. The one on the ak not the one for the SKS like they are using. Less moving parts.

Then you're going to LOVE the new Long Stroke AK derived piston system that PWS is coming out with in their Diablo upper line. 7", 10.5", 16".

This is the current version, there are some new upgrades coming to it after SHOT.
