Im itching for a .22lr wheel gun. Which ones make the best shooters, and have the smoothest action and trigger?

Ruger recently announced a GP100 10-shot 22lr, this sounds cool, and would probably cost me less new then a used S&W 10 shot. The SP101 .22 also looks neat.

Taurus, meh, but for a .22 it might be ok. Any thoughts?

I'm a big fan of the Smiths, I have an old 18 I picked up for ~$325 that I love.

I wouldn't feel bad at all paying ~$750 for a new 17 or 617, but check on gunbroker for used older models, they pop up all the time. I haven't been impressed with Ruger rimfire revolvers (except the excellent three screw single-sixes), and I'd stay away from Taurus just on principle.

Forgot to add, the new 617s have the S&W interchangeable front sight system which I am a HUGE fan of. You can stick fiber optic sights, partridge sights, or if you're truly ballin, a nice gold bead front sight pictured here on my SSR

I haven't tried many. I just have a cheap Taurus 94. Nine shot, and the single action is beautiful. Double action is heavy.

S&W is going to be the nicest (and probably most expensive) ones you can get. Personally, I steer clear of anything Taurus makes. If you don't have your heart set on a double action design, the Ruger single action is pretty nice.

If you're buying a single six (which is an excellent choice) find a used three screw model. It's tough to explain, but they're just somehow much more fun. Little extra click, lot of extra fun.

Those two would likely be excellent starts, though double check on the second one to make sure it has the 22lr cylinder.

As for smiths, my first choice would be something like this

Though this isn't a bad price either

I love 3 screw Ruger's, but feel safer carrying a later model with the hammer block safety. Never liked having to waste one round to carry on an empty chamber.

Figure out what your going to do with it before you buy. Some models have speed loader options and some don't. This matters for practice and games. Drilled and tapped for a scope mount if you decide to get one?
I'm not a fan of 22 wheel guns if there the same size as a center fire gun such as a 38 spl.
S&W will still be a good choice ten years from now. No buyers remorse.

I shot the small frame DA Ruger earlier this year and I liked it. The Single-Six are nice guns too.

Its just to mix it up with my other revolvers. I shoot alot of .38/.357 and really like the older smiths.

Want double action, don't need a scope, would like more then 6 shots especially if it is recent production, stainless would be a plus but not necessary.

Now your talking, I am looking for a collector quality K22 in the 1949-50 date to match with my K38 from 1949. Personally of those two, I would pick the second one for $400, all matching numbers including grips. The pre 17, 5 screw, 6" barrel K frame 22's are sweet shooters, and always worth more when you sell them if all numbers match.

You cannot go wrong with a Smith K22, aka Model 17 and Model 18.

With .22's, it all boils down to what you want to spend. There are a LOT of options across the price spectrum. Ruger Single Six or Ten, or Smith 617, for instance. I have an old Single Six but I'd love to have a 617 or something like that. I've never pulled the trigger on a Taurus that I wanted to pull again. There may be some that are okay, I just haven't seen one. (I haven't tried that many, in the spirit of full-disclosure).

The 94 is not bad. I don't like the double action, but the design makes the hammer pull easy enough. It's a fun little gun, but you can't compare it to a S&W revolver. It just isn't made for such a comparison at all. I think I paid under $300, which was the entire draw. I've spent more on a scope.
