I won a couple of Burris certificates at the Pikes Peak Council silent auction. I could use them both but I was trying to figure out if there was something I could do to increase the donation value to the Council by maybe offering one of them up on the board with any funds in excess of what I paid going to Council.
First, would something like this be appropriate and allowable here?
Second, would anyone here even be interested in one of these? The certificates allow the awardee (currently blank on my certificates) to purchase any scope/binoculars/spotting scope/etc. in Burris' 2014 catalog for 60% off the MSRP. Obviously, that makes it more worthwhile with the most expensive scopes like the XTR II Tactical 5-25x50 ($1802 MSRP, $720 after discount, $1199 at Optics Planet) or Eliminator III 4-16x50 ($2413 MSRP, $965 after discount, $1499 at Optics Planet).
Third, if I were to offer one of these (I'm definitely using one of them), how should I offer it to maximize the donation value to the Council while being fair to folks who might not be on 10 minutes after I post it) if I were to undervalue it? I don't think the board allows silent auction so maybe I set a high value and drop the asking price every couple of days until someone takes it (or I pull it)? If I do that, I'd guess I'd start at around $500 since that's less than the difference between the certificate discount and the Optics Planet price.
For what it's worth, I'd be willing to get split payments with me getting what I paid and the balance going directly to the council so the buyer gets the tax benefit of the "donation" but I'd need to figure out some way of being sure the checks clear before sending the certificate.
Worst case, if this is a bad idea or too complicated, I'll get myself TWO Christmas presents. [Coffee]
