My wifes car has a torn boot, I was just going to replace the entire cv axle but I cant find one anywhere other than the dealership. The dealership has it for $900, Rock Auto had them for $90, they are just out of stock.
So my question is, If I buy a new boot, how hard is it to clean out the existing cv joint? Its not clicking so I'm thinking its still in good shape. Is this doable?

2005 Infiniti G35X Front Passenger.
It's not a huge deal to take it apart and clean it up. I'm not overly familiar with your exact one but usually it is just a matter of removing a small snap ring to get it apart. Wipe the big stuff out with a rag and use some brake parts cleaner to clean the rest. New grease and a new boot and you should be good to go.

I have done CV repacks on honda and subaru's
All I did was wipe off the old bad grease and repack with new wheel bearing grease..
in both cases they lasted the life of the vehicle, but the old style replaceable boots leak a bit and I recommend sealing it with some silicon or something .

I've been lucky with my daughter's 2004 4-runner, and have been able to find the entire half-shaft for $75 at auto zone. It was cheaper than buying the boot kit, I tell ya!!

That's the way we do it at the dealerships..

Have your old one rebuilt. There is a place in Denver that does it but I cannot remember their name. There is also a shop on Greeley that rebuilds them for less than $100.
