View Full Version : How to get loc tite residue off?
I've got a free float rail that's all gooped up with loc-tite residue. I've hit it with laquer thinner, acetone, xylene, and alcohol. No bueno.
Any idea how to get this off?
Hit it with a propane torch, then some brake parts cleaner and a brass brush. May take a few tries, but that has worked best for me.
Rockset is a whole other mess, but hot water soak and a brass brush seems to work, again with a few tries.
Thanks. On a whim I tried a razor blade (it's a smooth part) and it came right off. Good to know the other method for the future, though.

Just make sure you use non-chloronated parts cleaner when you do it, high heat and chloronated chemicals can leave your lungs pretty much shredded in a single wiff. You shouldn't be getting it that hot when melting away a little loctite, but shit happens and that's not a good one to have happen.

Q: How can I remove a fastener that is "permanently" locked in?
A: The application of heat is needed to remove a fastener that can't be removed with a hand tool. Temperatures of 325F (http://viglink.pgpartner.com/rd.php?r=402&m=1057410567&q=n&rdgt=1413983380&it=1414415380&et=1414588180&priceret=394.79&pg=~~3&k=1e1808e5abaa6a68291f865649b77501&source=feed&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww%2Eamazon%2Ecom%2Fdp%2FB0095ZG CMQ%2Fref%3Dasc%5Fdf%5FB0095ZGCMQ3367076%3Fsmid%3D ATVPDKIKX0DER%26tag%3Dpg%2D1585%2D01%2D20%26linkCo de%3Ddf0%26creative%3D395093%26creativeASIN%3DB009 5ZGCMQ&st=feed&mt=~~~~~~~~n~~~) and above is needed to break down a standard anaerobic, 500F for high temperature Anaerobics. A heat gun or propane torch is commonly used to do this process, and careful disassembly should occur while parts are still hot. Once apart, and cooled, use methylene chloride (Chisel #79040) to remove cured excess material. Always wipe down the fasteners with clean up solvent to remove the wax film that Chisel (http://www.target.com/s?searchTerm=chisel) leaves on the surface.
Just for future reference. The "Chisel" product is called gasket remover, but it works wonders at removing excess LocTite of any strength.

Ask the experts, the experts answer. Looks like a drive down to my supply house, something else to have on hand.
