I just acquired for free (so I can't complain) a Coleman model 288 2 Mantle lantern from my father in law. He told me it was a kerosene lantern, however some research on the "information super highway" or "World Wide Web" has uncovered that it is a Coleman fuel lantern.

Although the companies that make these items never recommend other fuels, has anyone used this lantern and if so have they used any other fuels with it?

Thanks for the help. I feel like Jerry would know the answer to this.

White gas only. I doubt itd light with kerosene.

most Coleman Fuel lanterns will also run on unleaded gas in a pinch, but I wouldn't recommend it, unless they specifically state "dual fuel".

So I shouldn't mess around with unleaded?

I should have known you would know too.

Only if you want a potential bomb. The old lanterns are WG only.

My uncle used to cut white gas with unleaded by up to 50% with no ill effects but the fumes get pretty bad. We had one melt down running unleaded. Cost us a picnic table.

Unleaded also eats mantles more.

Unless it boldly says "Dual Fuel" on it, white gas only.

Call Coleman customer service and ask. Their customer service used to be rated top of any company. That was also 10 years ago when I worked for them.

IIRC, there was a way to convert the old standard white gas lanterns to use unleaded by replacing a flow valve or something but then it's single fuel with the unleaded. You're better off just buying some Coleman fuel at Sportsmans Warehouse or other source and using it as intended.

Walmart usually has plenty of cheap coleman white gas, and spare parts for lanterns sometimes too.

Thanks guys, I got a lot more information than I expected about a specific lantern. I will just stick to the Coleman gas as recommended by Coleman. However after running a test, there is a gas leak in the line so I need to get some parts and fix it.

FYI there's decent money repairing "vintage" camping equipment. The camp stoves repainted ,burners spruced up sometimes fetch $50 ~
Sold a few at last garage sale for Wulf. Guy couldn't hand money over fast enough, those had seen some miles.
