View Full Version : AAC 51T and SDN-6 question
Hope I can explain this right. I have future plans for an SDN-6 and will be using the Blackout 51T flash hider to mount it. My question is, other than the external threads and ratchet teeth on the flash hider is any of the rest of it critical to mounting the suppressor? I find the overall length of the flash hider a bit long for my taste and was wondering if I could have the three prongs out front cut down to about half of their current length and still have it function properly to mount the suppressor.

I'm having thoughts about the same setup when I have money, I'm no engineer, but I've read guys cut the prongs off because of the ringing after shots fired. I think it might be able to mount properly since the suppressor will ratchet on to the 51T while the thread guides it in. Again I'm no engineer but it looks that way.

Why not go for the brake or brakeout? Not sure how much shorter they are but I think the brake is shorter.
I'm not sure how it would affect function but it shouldn't affect mounting it. You could probably ask AAC they've answered questions on Facebook for me.
I've replaced every blackout hider I have with the brakeout or brake due to the ringing.
Even the brake and brakeout are longer than I want. I thought about getting the brake and having the second expansion chamber machined off. I'm just not sure if the front part of any of these devices is used for support or alignment inside the suppressor.
Might not matter anyways. I'm starting to have second thoughts on the SDN-6. Got to thinking about it and having the ratchet mechanism on the can may not be something I want. I'm a "keep it simple" kind of guy. Having tiny, intricate, moving parts on a suppressor might not be for me. Might go a different direction.

Well you can't get much simpler than a thread on, but the ratchet's tiniest part is a roll pin. It's a piece of spring steel pinned to the base of the can.

Yeah. I'm just a bit OCD about stuff I guess. Lol. I'm pretty sure there is just the lever, a spring, and a roll pin or whatever. Still, that's three additional parts that aren't needed to make it work as a suppressor. And if any of those three pieces were to fail it might even make using the thing difficult or impossible.

I'm pretty sure the lever is also the spring, that's why it's rated to crazy temps unlike the Gemtech twist lock which is an actual spring that is known to melt. But yeah, if that ever failed...kinda boned.
Surefires are different in that there's no ratchet, but still a mechanism to tighten it yet quick-attach.
To be honest the Thunderbeast is a great design with their thread-on-mount cans, you always have a muzzle device but the can threads onto it. If I didn't already have one AAC can I probably would've gone with a TBAC, but went with a 762SDN6 to match my Mini4.
Thanks for the info. Probably won't be until next year before I make a decision which one to get. Just brain storming and gathering info at the moment.
