Hey guys,
So yesterday I was up in Pawnee National Grasslands shooting when I encountered my first and hopefully last squib load.
Has anyone else ever had a squib load while at the range shooting? I got lucky that the bullet was not to far down the barrel and it prevented me from fully chambering another round. My dumb ass thought it was just a failure to fire, I learned a lesson for sure.

Glad you're okay!

Can you offer up more details about the ammo? Was it factory or handloads? Bullet/primer/powder/brass info?

That was a close one! Yes, I echo HB's comment above... was this ammo you purchased, reloaded, etc?

In the video he says he was shooting Freedom Munitions ammo.

I've had several friends tell me of squib loads shooting FM stuff; scary

It was ammo from Freedom Munitions, 165gr. 40 S&W Reman (factory reloads) from them.

Reminds us all to make sure we know where every shot went that we fire! If there's no hole in the target, then the bullet may well be still in the barrel! The only squib I've had was with my own .40S&W reload, and it was so strange (powder everywhere, weird sound, etc.) that I stopped and checked.

Squibs can and do happen, with any ammo. Good to keep a rod in the range bag so you can knock out that stuck bullet and keep on shooting!

I have a "candid" question ("candid" are one step removed from "dumb" questions): what is the best way to remove a stuck round like this one?

wooden dowel or cleaning rod (coated) not bare metal, tap from muzzle end .

What i thought were squibs (see ammo & reloading forum) hint ended up being not enough crimp in case. After some consulting with other reloaders AND calling hornady. The general consensus was 1: increase crimp 2: slower burning powder. So i did a tighter crimp and used Unique instead of TG for the rifle.

I use this tool from Arredondo: https://www.arredondoaccessories.com/category.cfm?cid=1006,2026&PID=fc25l4901oabhy&gid=

Brownells makes one out of brass: http://www.brownells.com/gunsmith-tools-supplies/handgun-tools/stuck-case-removers/squib-rod-prod1251.aspx

Usually, the bullet's stuck closer to breech/chamber than the muzzle, so removing it from the muzzle end, tapping towards the chamber is the way to go. Be sure to protect the muzzle, etc.

Here's a YouTube of a guy showing his squib & removal:

I am interested in the response you get from freedom munitions.
I am sitting on thousands of rounds of their ammo.

Any company that loads millions of rounds is statistically bound to load a squib.

Machines are good, but they aren't perfect.

I also would be interested to hear what Freedom's response is to your squib.

If I had a squib out of a 1978 spam can of surplus Ukrainian 7.62x54R, do I get a free night with Olga? [hahhah-no]

Glad you are OK and the gun is intact. I wager you will shoot slower for at least a little while.

Be safe.

That's scary man! I've had 3 squibs. One of my reloads, remington, and one federal xm193.

I've had one squib load in my life. The round was a remanufactured 9mm from a vendor I'd rather not specify as most of their ammo has been great. Luckily, I noticed I had a click but no real recoil as I was shooting so I stopped, unloaded and checked the barrel. Would have been nasty if I'd been firing in fast repetitions but it was easily rectified and the vendor gave me a box of 50 for my troubles when I reported it.

I have shot thousands of rounds of their ammo, as have several members of my church safety team with whom I shoot 2-3x times per month... never a squib yet, but I too would be interested in knowing what FM says about it, if they're contacted.

I really like FM, as they support ALOT of 3 gun matches all over. I would like to offer an experience I had with there ammo. Just before the 2014 Noveske 3 gun championship, Myself and another RO went to the 100yd berm to check our zeros. He was having some trouble getting his shots on paper so I offered to spot for him. Once he was actually on paper, the "groups" were 7-8 inches. I didn't know what his experience level was, so I though maybe it was just him or a mounting issue with his optic. We checked the mount(it was tight), and I sent 5 shots down from his rifle... same thing 7-8in groups. At this point it was either the optic was jacked up and not holding a zero or his ammo. I gave him some of my reloads to try(55gr FMJ, 25gr varget) and he shot a 1.5in group. The ammo he was using was from freedom munitions, I believe it was there blaster ammo. I understand the blaster ammo is for "training or practice" but 8in groups are a littler ridiculous.

Only had one and it was my fault, .30 carbine round with no powder. Just touching the rifling, but what a bitch to find something to clear it out with(it was late and I wanted it out).

Flatiron? Do you have a sticker on the back of your car?

I want in on a church safety team. Shooting for God has to be better than shooting for Uncle Sam. It gives a whole new meaning to What Would Jesus Carry, 9 or 45? [Flower]

I go to a smaller church and on a good week there might be one other concealed carrier in the pews.

Be safe.

Jesus obviously carries 9mm. His shot placement is infallible, so it's all about magazine capacity for multiple attackers at that point.

This happened to me twice on the same day. I had 1500 rounds of reloads, we had shot about 900 rounds and then the first squib happened, didn't think to much about it and I treated it like any other malfunction, to get my gun back In the fight. After I looked, tap, racked and the round wouldn't go bang I canted my glock almost 80 degrees and noticed the barrel was 1.5mm out of battery. I disassembled my glock and found a squib not too far into the barrel but nothing too crazy to scare me, so I dropped in my replacement barrel and keep shooting. With in the next 100 rounds I had the same problem happen again. Overall, I finished shooting the reloads and didn't have any other issues but now I don't shoot reloads and if I was shooting reloads I will not practice malfunction drills.
Glad everything worked out for you.

Jesus carries multiple cheeks. Complete forgiveness requires lots of turning.

He has a Heavenly Host to deal with Satan's Legions. No real need for small arms when you can rely on the Arm of the Lord in this type of warfare. [Beer]

I know I'm not the only one at my church. The other person that I know usually sits on the other side, so between the two of us, we have pretty good odds.
