View Full Version : I've had it with these stupid f'n red turn arrows

Holy hell I just can't take it anymore. They're everywhere, and they keep multiplying, with no end in sight. Merciless killers of my soul, slowly sucking away every last fiber of my being. Is the only job requirement for a traffic engineer that you must be a sociopath? That you must get a tingle up your thigh at the furthering of others' misery? For a society so saturated with eco-friendly carbon footprint save the wales global warming Prius-driving lead-free greenhouse gas GMO methane cow fart catching herp derp faggotry, just WHY in the F do we still put up with this retardedness?? THANK YOU my precious little red left turn arrow! THANK YOU for saving my life! THANK YOU for ensuring that I don't go doing something craaaaaaazy, like making a left turn with nary an oncoming car in sight! Without you, my precious little red beacon of blissfulness, I might be inadvertently forced to actually make forward progress on this roadway! Without you, my little red safety net, I might actually suffer a MPG rating similar to that advertised on my window sticker! Without you, oh exalted purveyor of turn security, I might actually get to a destination, ANY destination, in some semblance of reasonable timeliness. EAT SHIT AND DIE YOU LITTLE RED TERRORIST! STOP RUINING MY F'N LIFE!
Seriously though, when was it decided that we were so f'n stupid as a society that we are incapable of deciding when it is safe to turn left? There's no oncoming traffic, the through lights are green both ways, the stupid little walk signal is still lit so I know the green arrow ain't coming anytime soon... why the hell can't I turn? How much gas is needlessly wasted by motorists sitting there idling at these idiotic turn arrows, for NO. REASON. WHATSO-F'N-EVER.
Rant off.

kinda over the top dramatic ... really should be 6 / 10. But the last sentences in each paragraph save it.
9 / 10
Yep some red arrows are at the most useless intersections.
9/10, Ever since someone mentioned it, If I don't see Cockholster used in a rant it is not worthy of a perfect score.
Good one!
There are 2 explanations I can think of and both result in more tax revenue for the city. One is that they stop you so you'll look around and buy something impulsively and they'll collect some sales tax. The second is that the city/state gets 22 cents from every gallon of gas we buy so it behooves them to stall us and keep us burning gas.

It is the .gov making you safer, take look at the accident studies and see why that red arrow was put up. It is because of all the mentally handicapped drivers that think oncomming traffic should yield to them so they can make it to Starbucks quicker because they are in a hurry.
Wait until you have to deal with the flashing yellow arrow turn signal, then you will see the single digit IQs show their stuff.
You obviously underestimate the stupidity of the common driver. These red arrows probably save thousands of lives every year. Maybe more.
Just because most of us are smart enough to yield to oncoming traffic doesn't mean everyone is.
They piss me off not just because I feel stupid sitting there when I could have safely turned twenty times but they screw up the whole process of natural selection.

9/10. Referencing Ebola or Ebola-sauce would have earned a 10/10. I feel your pain, brother. I think the only time it's a good idea is when the intersection is on the peak of a hill and you can't see if traffic is coming from the other side. A normal person wouldn't turn if they don't deem it to be safe, but there are a lot of idiots out there and I don't want to be one of their victims.
Seriously though, when was it decided that we were so f'n stupid as a society that we are incapable of deciding when it is safe to turn left?
Long before it was decided that we didn't know how to merge onto the highway properly. I NEVER stop for the traffic lights on highway on-ramps. I stop for the traffic, but not the lights.
I've been noticing that when my area of town was built, it must have been 20 times smaller, because every side street is a single lane, that grows a turn lane at each intersection. The issue is that it grows a left turn only lane, and the combo lane is straight/right. So instead of combining all the traffic that actually can't proceed past a red light (straight and left turning), I always get stuck behind the 1 in 20 drivers actually trying to go straight, when I could have made a right on red 2 minutes before. It's been bugging me in my neighborhood for at least a year now, but I didn't think I could pull off a dedicated rant about it.
On the other hand, having been a liability claims adjuster for several years, I can tell you that there are MANY MANY people who can't manage a left turn without getting hit by oncoming traffic. With that in mind, I still prefer a blinking yellow over a red arrow. Hell, I'm all for more round-a-bouts.
...With that in mind, I still prefer a blinking yellow over a red arrow. Hell, I'm all for more round-a-bouts.
Even these frigging cockholsters that live here cannot negotiate a roundabout without killing a bunch of folks.
Not to take away from the OP, but I wish I had a penny for every deer-in-the-headlights look I see when the dumb shits of this state go to a lighted intersection with one way flashing red and the other way flashing yellow. If you do what YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO DO at this situation you are liable to get killed.
Don't get me started on flashing red/yellow and completely out lights. There aren't that many traffic rules specifically concerning traffic lights, how difficult can it be?

Also I agree 100%. Working nights means get to drive around south Denver and the DTC at night when there are 3 cars on the road. These pointless nanny lights are gonna get me arrested one of these days.
[Cheer]An excellent and timely rant! I agree fully. What's even worse I when you get three cars of slack-jawed mouth-breathers in front of you on a green left-turn arrow, and by the time it registers with them to TURN ALREADY, the light goes yellow after the first car. My vocabulary gets a real workout, thanks to those lights.

I am fully convinced that traffic engineers and Road designers simply DO NOT DRIVE CARS. they must all take public transportation .
It's the only explanation for how fucked up the design is .
Better not follow me I guess. If there's no traffic coming and the arrow is red, I go ahead and turn. After scanning for po-po of course.

I have a couple of left hand turn signals in my daily commute that I deal with using the Carrolla method (check mirror for cops, blow through them if safe).
For the vast majority of Americans, driving is the most dangerous thing they will ever do. The most dangerous maneuver in driving is making a left hand turn.
If you don't like them, move to Detroit. They have almost no red left turn arrows. In fact, most left turns are illegal in Detroit. Going North and want to go West? Turn right, go 1/8 to 1/4 mile and make a U-Turn. Cut down on accidents significantly, saved tons of airborne pollutants and cut commute times by 20%. Granted, only thing good about Detroit, but their traffic engineering is great.
I don't like red turn arrows, but I don't want my wife and kids killed by an idiot that does not know how to drive either.
I would give your rant 7/10 if you also implemented an eye for an eye policy when someone else's ignorance, selfishness or stupidity costs someone else their freedom because they caused an accident. Get rid of car insurance too (since those who should have it usually don't anyway) and implement a justice court system for auto-mobile accidents and I'd give you a 9/10.

In Detroit, they actually have lanes made specifically for U-turns. With the wide medians that they have, it is about a 20 mp sweeping turn then merge into traffic. Not U-turning into a through lane.
So is the idea that they just relocate the left turns to side streets that theoretically have less traffic than the main thoroughfare?
You can make lefts in neighborhoods and such, but not on main streets. Like Wadsworth, Kipling, Alameda, Bowles, etc. would all be no left turn streets. The traffic lights at the cross of main intersections let 40% more traffic flow through since they don't have everyone sitting for the turns. The U-turns are mid-block as well, not actually at intersections. On less used feeder streets, they do use the traffic circles.
It has probably even saved tourists lives by not making them late in the "less inviting" parts of town.
Hmm, what do you know, they even have a web-page explaining it:
http://www.michiganhighways.org/indepth/michigan_left.html
I did not realize they were a "Michigan" thing since Detroit Metro is the only MI destination I have ever been to.
When I lived in Omaha, there were a number of "go right to turn left" intersections. A bit confusing, but actually quite practical once you get used to them.
If the government won't protect us from ourselves, who will?

The single thing I like when traveling around TX (mostly Dallas) are the Texas U-turns they have on all the highway's access roads.

Denver Metro traffic engineers are some of the worst. I went to school with a few of them. I worked on a CDOT ($400K) and a DCC ($200K) team project for traffic light timing as projects while in engineering school. We proved the concept with minor infrastructure changes, mostly software changes and they rejected it. I don't remember the number of hours, fuel and pollants saved, but it was huge. That was in 1987 and 1991. They finally got around to implementation of some of the "good" ideas around 2005 and last week I read about another one coming in 2015.
Don't even get me started on Boulder. They actually retarded the lights and worked a delay flow algorithm to "discourage" non-Boulderites from traversing Boulder.

THIS! Of course the state made it some kind of stupid rule (at least in Evergreen), that if there is a fatal accident at an intersection (just ONE!), they put in a red arrow. Out of 8 lights, 3 have a red turn arrow after one hapless person was killed at each. It's only a matter of time, judging by how dumb people seem to be getting...
I'm with the OP. FUCK red turn arrows, fuck them in their stupid asses. That's why on my way home I always turn a 1/4 mi before my actual turn, just to avoid a red arrow.

At least if the left has its own turn lane and you need to go straight, the people turning right have a CHANCE of turning on a red, and if I'm going straight and the light is green, they can turn anyway. If I have to wait for someone turning left, I miss the damn light half the time. Something very wrong with not getting through a green light when you are going straight.
sic_semper_tyrannis
11-04-2014, 18:03
Those flashing yellow turn arrows that have been popping up all over the place recently just boggle my mind. They serve absolutely no purpose whatsoever, because they are completely redundant. Traffic turning left on green has always had to yield right-of-way to oncoming traffic. This is the way it has ALWAYS been. A solid green light with no turn arrow activated means exactly that: Left turns can proceed when oncoming traffic is clear. These flashing yellow arrows have the EXACT SAME MEANING. So why the hell do they exist? All it does it confuse the Deliverance-kids that are too stupid to breath let alone operate a vehicle. Generally, even the derpiest of tards at least understands the principal of 'yield on left'. These flashing yellow arrows just add another layer of complexity that makes shit unnecessarily confusing.
To clarify, I fully believe that dedicated turn arrows serve a purpose. There are plenty of intersections that need them, because oncoming traffic during rush hour would never allow for left turns to be made without them. Pretty much any intersection along Wadsworth between I-70 and Church Ranch (a godless soul sucking stretch of road I call "The Gauntlet") would be a prime example. So during rush hour, it makes sense to have those dedicated green arrows. However, even during rush hour, it is still stupid that the 'left turn yield on green' rule does not apply. After the green arrows ends, the signal SHOULD cycle to two-way solid green. That way, cars can proceed during the constant gaps in oncoming traffic, thus helping to clear out the turn lanes and stop them from backing-up into the normal through-lanes, an issue which creates even more problems.

Try staying centered in the left turn lane, and behind the stop bar or crosswalk and don't creep forward. If you do this, you will get the signal a lot more. State and most all Metro area specs call for the inductive detectors in the pavement to be able to pick up and hold a call from a "120 cc motor bike".
The most common problem of detectors not calling is because the motorist (car or motorcycle) is either that they don't stop until they are past the stop bar and into the crosswalk, especially at the intersections where the stop bar and crosswalk are set back from the flow line of the cross traffic, or they creep forward past the stop bar into the crosswalk while waiting for the signals to change.

The red arrow thing is different, because it affects me on every single trip I ever take, no matter how short. However, I will give your issue some credit in regards to Florida. I go there a couple times a year, and the merge/acceleration lane thing is a huge problem there. All the blue hairs spilling out from the County Kitchen Buffet can lead to some scary situations.

And no longer approved by The FHWA or MUTCD. That why we now have the Flashing Yellow Arrow left turn signals on federal and state highways. Existing ones can be maintained, but if they are rebuilt, they have to go.
You can't be serious. WHY? Are they too damn efficient? That's the only reason I can think of. The government hates efficiency. We'll need to do a three year environmental impact study, followed by a detailed study on re-homing the local sage grouse population, before any changes can be made to this traffic signal... oh, and then open the competitive bidding process for a minority owned businesses to come put up a ladder and change the f'n light.
I wish we had staged lights.

I've got 4 horns on my car. I give a courtesy 2 seconds. You don't move and you get blasted until you do.
