I use the Rustoleum Camo stuff.
Tan base coat. Then patches of brown and green placed semi-randomly. Leaf covered branches laid over gun, then spray different color over it (i.e. if its a brown spot and next to it is a tan spot, spray with green over the vegetation). Remove leaves and branches, throw clumps of pine needles and grass over it, and spray with another color... sometimes a different color is best, sometimes 3rd color, depends on how it looks so far. Remove vegetation, and lightly spray or "dust" more color splotches on to blend it all together, going heavy on whatever fits your terrain best (i.e. if Pawnee is your environment I'd do a little more tan than brown and green).

This the same concept, but using mesh instead of vegetation...

Tan Krylon high temp basecoat, followed by a good coat of the tan textured finish, then some brown & green over high points and large flat surfaces. No particular pattern, just breaking up the outline. I'm not trying to hide in full kit from someone 5 feet away...
I've thought about doing this many times but I always chicken out. I'm sure mine would look like crap anyways.

I usually go with a tan base and then brown and green for patterning. I'll finish with a dusting of either tan or really light green (depending on what's available). I generally use shot up target backers as a stencil but I've used handfuls of grass or gravel as well.

I like the shot up target backer pattern, pretty sweet. I've always used the mesh and or vegetation.
I have an idea to use expanded metal. Similar to what is done with the mesh.

I used a sand camo base , then covered the AR with pine needles, striped the needles in 5 colors to get some neat 3d effects. Took it out the next weekend for a spin.

Did you just paint right over that or did you disassemble anything?
Just rubbed the exterior down with lacquer thinner to remove all solvents from the surface, then taped off anything I didn't want painted. Start to finish is maybe 20-30 minutes. It's just krylon, so I don't put a huge amount of effort into it.
I did this one using an old broom. The whole rifle was done but then I had Mark Chanlynn build a new Barrel and I put on the Trijicon scope, and just couldn't bring myself to take a rattle can to either.

My M1A Scout Squad with an homage to the WW2 German "Gezackt" camo pattern.
Sent from my Id.
Did two layers of Krylon camo paints. Wonder how quick it will flake off with how much I toss it around.

Man, I don't think I could force myself to paint a gun. Nothing against it, it does look cool if done well, I just don't think I personally could do it. I'm too much into the "traditional" looks of how they were made, as in blued steel and oiled walnut, or a normal black AR finish. Just like taking a nice Harley or hot rod and painting it all flat black, I couldn't do that either. I kinda have mixed feelings about the "aged patina" look on old bikes and cars too, but old guns should retain that funk IMO.
Now, I wouldn't mind buying a painted gun if it was already that way. I just can't do it myself. But I'll refinish a nasty stock with a traditional BLO finish in a heartbeat. I know, I'm a wierdo.....

That's why I just did my pellet gun. Could make the mental choice to paint a custom AR. maybe if I snag a cheap PSA and do a build I might, but I'll still to the pellet gun for now.
Did this over the weekend on a PSA build.

I don't have the expertise (or guts) to paint an expensive rifle, but I might do a PSA AR or 10-22. Seems like a fun weekend project, and I'm going to have lots of spare time in the coming months.

Ditto. Also why I did a PSA build so I could paint one and not feel bad. Haha.

Recently repainted my SBR at work. Tan base coat then dusting with brown and green through a piece of cammie-netting.

That IS a great looking paint job. Well done!
It was a team effort, me and my son. He helped me gather leaves and sticks, then helped me spray some of it. Used 4 different colors of Camo Rustoleum.

Nice krylon job, but I'm curious about your rear sight and red dot placement. Please share your reasoning behind that.

I prefer the ocular lense at the same position as on my magnified optics. The dot is IMO easier and therefore faster to pick up in this position. I have the MRO mounted on the last 1913 slot.
The Irons are back up sights not primary sights, so I put them where I can. In their current location with the 0-200M rear aperture on the MBUS Pro flipped open the sight picture is the same as it would be on a Mil-Spec M4A1 with the 300M aperture.
