Can you guys point me in direction to shop for puppies other than retail outlets. I'm not 100% sure I'm gonna cave in to my kids wishes but they are beating me up pretty good for a little 4 legged poopin and peein machine. Just in case someone here has a connection I am looking for a Weiner dog . Thanks in advance for your help.
Is a wiener dog kind of like a dachshund?

Yeah but Weiner sounds funny. Dachshund is so formal.
Sorry, I'm not sure where to look for a puppy. I do know one of my brothers had a weiner dog and he loved it.
I'm sure with all the dog lovers here on the forums someone will chime in soon with some real advice.
Happy puppy shopping.

Didi approves of your dog selection.
Adams County animal shelter has a 50:1 pitt-bull to every other dog ratio, before you drive over there.

Try adopting a pet before supporting puppy mills and unhealthy dogs. NOT to say an adopted pet doesn't carry some baggage
Before you cave in to your children have you figured out the logistics?
Who feeds, cleans up and makes sure the gate isn't left open so your new addition isn't flattened out by the kids school bus driver.
Which child gets to hold the dog after 5 minutes of screaming / crying because child is HOGGING doggy all to them self.
Longmont had similar pit ratios last time we looked. If you decide to super size that dog, I know of a great place for shepherds in Littleton

It's sad to see some good natured dogs never find a home. We found a pit mix sitting with the healer / border mix. They were both hanging out ignoring the 12 puppies next kennel over yapping and howling. Great disposition. The only reason we didn't bring her home with the healer/ border mix was her paperwork had PITBULL on it.
We didn't want to adopt a dog, finding out 1 year later the town council was going to ban them. Terrible having to give up a pet because it MIGHT bite.
IT'S THE DEED. NOT THE BREED.

Yes it is beltec, now go apologize to your sister next time you might get something neither one of use wants to happen. Ain't that right son?
Our daughter is 31, a few years back she called asking our Opinion on a dog she wanted. Same spiel to her. It's quite for a few seconds and then.
DAD you do realize i'm 29 and have not lived at home since i was 18, YES? I did kid BUT You Called me. She's as stubborn and thick headed as her mom.

We adopted our pit mix at the Boulder Humane Society. They were kind enough to label him a boxer mix. Smart folks there.
Have you checked between the bun?
We just adopted a Dachshund from the Cheyenne Animal Shelter. They are out there, you might have to ask if the shelter has one. CAS didn't have the one we adopted out in general population. They asked what we were looking for.

After seeing your lates pet addition, i'd be hiding it from people too, that demonic fuker pissed on my walker. Of course it was the only thing it could lift it's leg high enough to hit.

I'll check a couple more places and post any relevant links.
You're still mad about that? Jeez.... let it go.

Roxy approves as well. And she did not piss on Jim's walker when he was here.[LOL]
"Doctor" Grey Thanks for the link. Roxy needs a companion but the last couple at the shelter here they wanted $400 for a 13 YO dog.

Another thing you might try is to call around to vet clinics, and put the word out that you're looking to adopt a young dachshund. When I worked at a vet clinic, we always had people that had to PCS and needed to find a home for their pet. You could get lucky and end up getting a puppy and making a service member very happy, knowing their puppy was going to a loving home.

Thank you. I still remember when the neighbors came to our door and held her up and said "if you don't take her she goes to the pound" yes she needed work but has turned out to be a great dog.[Flower]
Make sure you watch this whole series of videos. There are several! Haha

False dichotomy.
If you want a specific breed and you want a puppy then buying from a reputable breeder is the best way to get what you want.
I don't know anything about these guys, but they have the coolest name for a Dachshund breeder in the state :p

One thing on weiners to be aware of is they are the most likely breed of dog to bite people in the US. Wife informed me of that after i got her a minature this spring. That said they are awesome dogs. The other one i had was a full size as a kid, uncle used to breed em, and all of my moms siblings have them. Fun crazy and energetic but people forget that they can have a pretty mean steak when put in a corner and are on the defensive, breed was bread to hunt badgers and other burrowers after all so you know they wont back down from much. Also they need to dig, just the way they are so make sure youve got an area youre ok with them doing their thing in. Also if you do get one dont allow them access to food whenever they want, they will gorge and get over weight which leads to big time $ into surgerys to fix back issues. Overall they are awesome but like any breed they have their quirks to be aware of.

Thanks for all the help and info. guys! Pets are a lot of responsibility and that is my hesitation because I know the little guy will ultimately end up being my third kid.

Make sure your chosen breeds characteristics mach your lifestyle. Too any people get a dog based on looks when it's a horrible fit for how they live their lives.

@h2so4 Crystal Creek. John's dog Ronnin has won shows etc. He is very committed to the breed and he has only "American" line sheps - more family dog then guard dog but still GSD.
I agree that it is the individual dog and not the breed. But the few dogs we tried to adopt had way too much baggage. One of the dogs saw our cat and anything that size as food and I was not sure if he eas safe around my youngest. And yes we told the rescue that we had a cat and small kids so the dog had to be compatible, but they cared more about the dog then the family. So we went with a clean sheet.
Of the three wiener dogs we have had our street over the past twenty years, they all developed bad backs, became incontinent and lived in pain. The back pain might be why the breed bites a lot of people.
If I had kids that might have tendency of playing rough with a dog and you were a active family I'd run away from a wiener.
Talk to a local vet about your family style and activities.
