Let's give people who can maybe drive a Geo and have never seen snow (did I forget to mention here illegally?)drivers licenses!
And then let's give them a 4x4, preferably a Yukon, Suburban or Escalade.
Let's watch them go like a bat out of hell!
But when they slide the least little bit let's watch them drive at 5MPH thereafter.
I should get combat pay for driving through Commerce City.
Brilliant move Colorado Democratic lawmakers. You should have to ride to work with them!

Yea its pretty comical up here in ft collins too. Between the mexicans, college kids, and Californians/ texans its a sight to see when it snows.
I'm sure CPUSA has more brilliant ideas coming our way.
I like sliding around turns, but that's just me.

I second this: Got stuck in my car near auraria campus yesterday it was hilarious to see them fall and slide one after the other on the sidewalk / street crossing.

I made sure to get to the office by 6 this morning in an attempt to avoid most of the traffic. Easy drive but a few folks in tiny, RWD cars with slicks made for a few bad words.
That's not to say there aren't some bad spots out there. When I parked in my VERY slightly sloped driveway last night, put the e-brake on, turned the truck off and got out to get stuff from the back seat, my truck slid down my driveway and all the way into the street...while I was half in, half out of the back seat. Funny sight I'm sure. I have never had a vehicle slide on ice while parked.
Parked it back in the driveway with the front axle engaged and blocked the tires to make sure that didn't happen again.

Winter here is always fun ... as someone who grew up in Kansas (where you learn to drive on ice and the snow weighs about 30 times what it does here) I enjoy watching the Texans, Californians (and now Mexicans) tear it up here.
When we first moved here I drove a 914 Porsche with Yokohama A509s (not as bad as the A008 track tires I ran back on the streets back in Kansas but not exactly "all weather") and never had half the problems I see these Texicans with their 4x4 pickups and SUVs having.
Stay frosty out there :p

FROM THE DIARY OF A NEW COLORADOAN (formerly from California)
Aug. 12 - Moved to our new home in Colorado. I am so excited. It's so beautiful here. The mountains are so majestic. Can hardly wait to see them with snow covering them.
Sep. 15 – Colorado: it is the most beautiful place on earth! The leaves have turned all colors and shades of yellow. Went for a ride through the beautiful mountains and saw some deer. They are so graceful. Certainly they are the most wonderful animals on earth. This must be paradise. I love it here.
Sep. 22nd. Deer season ends soon. I can't imagine anyone wanting to kill such a gorgeous creature. Hope it snows soon. I love it here.
Nov. 11 - Remembrance Day - It snowed last night. Woke up to find everything blanketed with white. It looks like a postcard. We went outside and cleaned the snow off the steps and shoveled the driveway. We had a snowball fight (I won). When the snow plow came by, we had to shovel the driveway again. What a beautiful place. I love Colorado.
Nov. 12 - More snow last night. The snow plow did his trick again to the driveway. I love it here.
Dec. 19 - More snow last night. Couldn't get out of the driveway to get to work. It's beautiful here but I'm exhausted from shoveling. Fucking snow plow.
Dec. 22 - More of that white shit fell last night. I've got blisters on my hands and a sore back from shoveling. I think the snow plow hides around the corner until I'm done shoveling the driveway. Asshole.
Dec. 25 - Merry effin’ Christmas! More frigging snow. If I ever get my hands on the son-of-a-bitch who drives the snow plow, I swear I'll kill the bastard. Don't know why they don't use more salt on the roads to melt the fucking ice.
Dec. 27 - More white shit last night. Been inside for three days now except for shoveling out the fucking driveway after that snow plow goes through every time. Can't go anywhere, the car's stuck in a mountain of white shit and it's so frigging cold. The weatherman says to expect another 10 inches of the shit again tonight. Do you know how many shovels full of fucking snow 10 inches is?
Dec. 28 - That fucking weatherman was wrong. We got 34 inches of the shit this time. At this rate it won't melt before summer. The snow plow got stuck up in the road and that bastard came to my door and asked to borrow my shovel. After I told him that I had already broken six shovels shoveling out all the shit he had pushed into my driveway, I damn near broke my last one over his fucking head.
Jan. 4 - Finally got out of the house today. Went to the store to get food and on my way back a damned deer ran in front of the car. Did about $3,000 damage to the car. Those fucking beasts should be killed. The bastards are everywhere. Wish the hunters had exterminated them all last September.
May 3 - Took the car to the garage in town. Would you believe the thing is rusted out from all that fucking salt they put all over the roads.
May 10 - Moved back to California. I can't imagine why anyone in their right mind would ever want to live in such a God forsaken place as Colorado.

Many people think that having a 4x4 makes them invincible. Well when handled improperly it just ensures that all four wheels spin and loose traction instead of two.

I used to have fun driving the bosses GEO and Festiva when I was a courier. They worked out well in the snow. A bald tire with a bit of steel belt showing was ok on ice.
If you don't think marijuana causes brain damage, you should ride with me for a couple of days. I have averaged about 200 miles a day in and around Denver for my job over the last 20 years. The snow just exacerbates a problem I have seen building for a while now. I'm looking for a real good quality dash camera. I'm going to sell these videos to fund my retirement.

I realize our winters are pretty mild compared to some places, but I just don't understand RWD (especially powerful) cars in Colorado, if it's your only car. To each there own I guess.
With that said, the E locker in two wheel drive makes my truck pretty fun when the conditions are right.

I used to have front and rear lunchboxes in my WJ. I couldn't get stuck or lose control in that thing if I tried. We took a trip to Pickle Gulch and ran the rock climbs while they were coated with ice and snow no sweat. I'm in the back in this picture. (http://i.imgur.com/9gRd7CV.jpg)

This is a software problem not a hardware one. I guarantee you I could make it around in a RWD pickup with a 500+HP motor, 4 speed and street tires better than your average Texicanifornia transplant in a Subaru Forester because I was trained as a teenager how to drive on ice and snow.

Gotta back Hurley on this one. He's not suggesting that you (or he) can't get around in a RWD, but rather that it doesn't make sense to not give yourself better hardware. A soldier was trained how to shoot, and he could use a Nagant to outshoot a paper pusher with an AR. But that's not a reason for the soldier to not get an AR of his own.
I drove an M3 for a winter...once. After that, I bought a cheap winter beater to get around in during snow. Granted, it didn't have snow tires so I could have helped the case. I did have a 325i before the M3 and it had good all seasons and a big stereo in the trunk. It did good for the most part but I still prefer a 4x4. It just eliminates a lot of the stress.

I can see that point, but for most of us here in CO we only need a snow ready vehicle a handful of days a year.

On board air? Not in my Tacoma, it's bone stock with the exception of one size larger tires, and the "grey wire mod" that allows me to use the locker in 2wd. I had a Cherokee with OBA and every other mod under the sun (except front locker lol).

There's always someone that can conduct an air strike in a hot air balloon, that doesn't mean it's ideal.

So the spouse should sell her 02 RWD silverado (purchased new) , with good truck (not car) tires for a FWD vehicle, to get around better in? She can handle that truck like a pro in snow.
Her trick to not breaking traction, ease the gas pedal from a stop, let off the gas when turning, allow plenty of space from the vehicle ahead of her AND (even though it's an auto) know those other options on the gear selector are there for a reason. Auto or manual trans, knowing how to use your transmission for braking / slowing down is something few drivers have a clue on.
If it's real bad we stay home or use the 4 x 4 and still drive the same. It's not how much better one vehicle is over the other in snow, they all stop the same if you need to HIT THE BRAKES, shitty.

Not at all what I was saying, I was more less using that reference for the 500hp, 2wd super truck on street tires.
I'm very familiar with engine braking, using your gears when it's slick (even in an auto), etc etc, but nobody is going to convince me, that with equally skilled and cautious drivers, that a 2wd is better than a 4wd in the slick stuff. Obviously when it comes to stopping it's a non issue.
This feels like Dejavu, I'm sure we've discussed this here on the forum before lol.
