View Full Version : Colorado Commission Hearing Will Address Traditional Ammunition - 11/13/2014
Received this notice from NSSF:
Colorado Commission Hearing Will Address Traditional Ammunition
The Colorado Parks and Wildlife Commission on Thursday, Nov. 13, will consider a Citizen Petition requesting a regulation to prohibit the use of traditional ammunition for hunting all game wildlife within the state. The hearing will be taking place at the Burlington Education and Community Center, 340 S. 14th St. Burlington, Colorado. NSSF is asking all sportsmen in the area who can attend the hearing to appear to voice opposition to this attempt to ban traditional ammunition, which is part of an ongoing movement supported by anti-hunting organizations such as the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS).
Don't let HSUS win this battle and accomplish this step in its ultimate goal of a complete ban on hunting in Colorado.
Here are some important points to remember:
There is no sound science supporting the ban of traditional ammunition used by hunters for generations.
Don't allow the Humane Society and other anti-hunting groups to make any progress in ultimately banning hunting in Colorado.
There is absolutely no wildlife population impact or human health risk because of exposure to traditional ammunition.
Banning hunting ammunition is the first step before a complete ban on traditional ammunition for shooting sports and outdoors ranges can occur.
For more information on traditional ammunition please check out our fact sheet: http://www.nssf.org/factsheets/PDF/TradAmmoBackground.pdf

WTF!! Why in Burlington,CO? Denver is the capitol. Most of the hunting in that area is gamebirds. Largest amount of hunting in this state for game is in the Mountains. Why have a hearing in a plains town that is almost in Kansas? Again WTF???

Thanks for posting this NSSF message.
I just came over here to do the same thing.

Because that's where the commission meeting is. Read the included links, and you'll see there are several other items and 2 other Citizen Petions on the agenda for the meeting.
Here's a snippet from the meeting agenda (the formatting is jacked but look at the bolded -by me- portion:
Citizen Petitions
Final action may be taken on rule-making petitions at any step of the Commission’s generally applicable two-step rule-making process.
12 11:15 (A) Danielle Isenhart Chapter W-0 - “General Provisions” 2 CCR 406-0, and
those related provisions of Chapter W-2 - (“Big Game”
2 CCR 406-2), Chapter W-3 - (“Furbearers and Small
Game, except Migratory Birds” 2 CCR 406-3), and
Chapter W-5 - (“Small Game - Migratory Birds” 2 CCR
406-5) necessary to accommodate changes to or
ensure consistency with Chapter W-0.
1 At its November meeting, the Parks and Wildlife Commission will
consider a Citizen Petition for Rulemaking related to General
Provisions, as follows:
• A Citizen Petition for rulemaking requesting the Commission
pass a regulation prohibiting the use of lead ammunition for
hunting all game wildlife within the State of Colorado.
The Commission may accept all or a portion of the petition for final action,
further consideration or otherwise reject the petition at the November
Commission meeting. A copy of the petition may be obtained by contacting
Danielle Isenhart (303) 866-3203 ext. 4625, Regulations Manager, Colorado
Parks and Wildlife.
Anyone still feel like the (D)'s and other lefties are feeling powerless after the "Republican Wave"? They are going to come hard and heavy, any way they can to diminish our rights. If they can ban lead for hunting, the WILL ban lead for ALL shooting. PERIOD.
I have friends and family in Burlington and the surrounding communities, and have forwarded this info along, in hopes that many will be able to attend.
Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I will sadly admit that this petition was not on my radar at this time.

I've believed this to be a method of gun control for years. Banning lead or adding an outrageous ammo tax.

Bump up.
Need to hit the email folks.
WTF!! Do they never learn.
Small plus. I talked to family, and a detailed announcement about the commission hearing, with emphasis on the lead ban, was published on the front page of the local paper (The Burlington Record).
I have no idea whether that content is online. I will check.

I am not a hunter but I emailed all of the commissioners and asked that they do what is right for the proper and humane management of Colorado wildlife, continue to allow traditional hunting techniques with traditional ammunition.

Subj: Please vote against Agenda item 12 -- The prohibition of traditional ammunition for hunting all game wildlife within the state of Colorado
Members of the parks and wildlife commission:
I am sorry that I am unable to attend your meeting in Burlington, but I wish to state my desire that traditional hunting ammunition continue to be allowed for hunting in Colorado.
Traditional ammunition has been developed, tested and improved over many years to allow the most humane harvesting of wildlife, enabling organizations such as your own to successfully manage wildlife populations within our state.
Please vote against Agenda Item 12.
Thank you,

Great news! Thanks for the update.
I missed this when first posted, but for clarification you can sign up to receive emails from the DOW, including notice of commission meetings, and agenda information. You can go to the commission webpage and read the agenda documents and minutes after the meeting. There is some great stuff regarding license numbers etc if you know what to look for in the documents.
The Commission frequently travels to meet, there was no sinister purpose. Also petitioners are free to submit whatever crackpot scheme they want and the commission considers it.
I don't remember where but I remember reading that the lead bullet thing is tied to some anti gunner or hunting crowd, maybe Humane society, so people should stay aware. California has banned most lead ammo.
Back to the bunker before the Feds detect me.

Yep, this one was proposed and sponsored by the Humane Society.
Is it about the humanity? Or is it about the lead (which is soooo toxic)? Or is it about the money?
Humanity: Modern hunting ammo is pretty much as humane as it has ever been as a method of harvesting game.
Lead: This argument is moronic. The lead came from the ground in the first place. Putting 200-300gr of lead back into the ground is not going to disrupt life on Earth.
Money: This makes the most sense. Money and Politics. [Shake]

Colorado Parks and Wildlife Commission Denies Ammunition Petition
The Colorado Parks and Wildlife Commission on Thursday, by a nearly unanimous 5-1 vote, denied a citizen petition requesting a regulation to prohibit the use of traditional ammunition for hunting all game wildlife within the state. NSSF thanks the commission for taking a rational and reasoned approach to a tactic that is promoted by anti-hunting organizations, the Humane Society of the United States foremost among them. Commission members opposed the ban citing a lack of credible scientific evidence on a large enough sample size, potential economic impact on hunters and the state, impact to Colorado's economy, significant decrease in the Parks and Wildlife budget, and concerns regarding alternative ammunition availability. NSSF will continue to monitor the legislative and regulatory environment in Colorado for any future attempts to ban traditional ammunition.

Hopefully the meeting minutes will be available soon (but it looks like they take their time).
Here's some of the opposition: Boulder Rights of Nature (http://boulderrightsofnature.org/action-alerts/)
COLORADO PARKS & WILDLIFE COMMISSION WILL MEET NOVEMBER 13 TO TAKE UP THE ISSUE OF LEAD AMMUNITION
A call for lead ammunition ban in Colorado to protect wildlife!
2 Actions you may take before November 13, 2014:
1) Please consider taking 30 seconds to sign the Care2 petition (which has been signed by more than 10,000 people (including more than 907 people in Colorado). Paula Brown will present this petition to the Colorado Parks & Wildlife Commission at their public meeting November 13 at 11:15 AM, Burlington Community & Education Center, 340 S. 14th St. Burlington, CO.
At its November 13-14th meetings, the Colorado Parks and Wildlife Commission will consider a Citizen Petition for rulemaking related to General Provisions requesting that the Commission pass a regulation prohibiting the use of lead ammunition for hunting all game wildlife within the State of Colorado.
The Commission may accept all or a portion of the petition for final action, further consideration or otherwise reject the petition at the November Commission meeting.
A copy of the petition may be obtained by contacting Danielle Isenhart (303) 866-3203 ext. 4625, Regulations Manager, Colorado Parks and Wildlife or at below link – scan down to pink page 7.
http://cpw.state.co.us/Documents/Commission/2014/Nov/ITEM12-ChapterW-0-LeadAmmunition-CITIZENPETITION.pdf#search=lead ammunition
2) Please contact the commissioners to let them know you support banning all lead for both hunting and fishing in the state of Colorado. The correlation between the suffering and prolonged deaths of wildlife has been clearly established.
Our national symbol, the Bald Eagle, is amongst those most severely affected. Other raptors (including condors, hawks, owls and falcons) show elevated lead levels, which often leads to unnecessary prolonged deaths.
The damage is not limited to birds of prey. Anything that scavenges is vulnerable, i.e., magpies, ravens, vultures, crows, jays, dogs, cats, foxes and coyotes.
Once lead shot was banned from waterfowl hunting in the U.S., Anderson, et.al. (2000) estimated that: “lead poisoning of Mallards was reduced by 64% in the Mississippi flyway; and it was projected that 1.4 million ducks of the North American fall continental flight were spared from fatal lead poisoning.”
Please don’t let gun rights advocates maintain that switching from lead to steel or copper ammunition equals a threat to their hunting rights! These are two very separate issues.
Arizona has had tremendous success with education and non-lead ammunition subsidies (80-90% compliance). Is Colorado not as smart, capable and caring?
Here is a three part series that was posted on Environmental Health News about lead poisoning affecting children in shooting clubs; as well as target shooters, firing range workers and their families. This may be very helpful in the campaign to outlaw ammunition with lead in it. http://projects.seattletimes.com/2014/loaded-with-lead/3/

Emphasis of action item "1)" added by me. Wow...a whole 907 Colorado citizens signed their petition. You'd think they'd get the hint.
Need to find out who the 1 vote was.

There's one or two suspects there, but I couldn't find a record of votes or even which 6 members were present beyond a list in the agenda.

This is moronic. There is no such thing as "hunting rights". There are rights to life, liberty, and [the pursuit of] happiness. In addition, we have the Bill of Rights, which protect us from the government. The Bill of Rights doesn't mention hunting anywhere. These people aren't firing on all cylinders...
