From an explanation on thread bumping I sent someone years ago:

The thing with bumping is that is sounds a lot more complicated than it actually is. A "bump" is nothing more than making another post in a thread which causes the thread to "bump" up to the top of the forum thread list as having the most current activity. All you do is click on the "Post Reply" button at the top and bottom of any thread (from within the thread), enter your text - most folks use "bump" or "btt" (bump to top) unless they have something of value they want to add to their thread, and click the "Submit Reply" button to submit your post.

Like I said, it sounds a lot more complicated that it really is and it confuses a lot of members.

But pleease keep in mind that our site rules restrict an individual bumping their thread (in the Trading Post forums) more than once in a 24 hour period. The exception to this is if you need to post a reply to a specific question asked in your thread.

One other thing you don't want to do, unless you want to get on the bad side of the mods, is post a sentence using just one or two words at a time. That'll go over like a lead balloon.
