View Full Version : Disarming the Border Patrol?
Seems odd.
http://www.foxnews.com/us/2014/11/12/border-patrol-agents-say-agencys-gun-recall-puts-them-in-danger/
Nearly one-third of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection's 16,300 M4 carbine rifles were tested by the agency's office of training and development, which determined that more than 2,000 had the potential for malfunction. The rate of nearly 40 percent was "more than we are comfortable with,” said CBP Deputy Chief Ron Vitiello.
But in the meantime, Border Patrol agents are dubious about the department's claims, given that the guns' manufacturer, Colt, has not issued a recall. And they are vehemently opposed to "pool guns" -- weapons shared by two or more agents.
“All you need to do is pull out the old firing pin and put in the new one and the rifle is ready to go,” he said.
Vitiello said that may be the case, but the work must be done by a specialist.
“It may be easy to replace a firing pin, but these are things that should be done by a professional,” he said.
40% of 16,300 is 6,520.

Only 1/3 of the 16,300 were tested = 5433.33
And 40% of those were found defective = 2173.33

"Nearly one-third of the M4s..."
33% of 16,300=5,433
40% of 5,433=2,173
Yes, yes he can be trusted to use a calculator. Apparently you can't be trusted to read though [Beer]

Or that the BPs ROE even allowed firing of said rifles... I can imagine rifles used exclusively for training would have this happen, but not duty rifles.

That was my initial thought as well. Would just carrying around these rifles result in that many being defective? I would imagine it makes the news every time there is a border patrol shooting since the whole Fast and Furious deal.

I'm not a super tactical operator, but I've never seen am AR-15 firing pin "go bad" or break. [Dunno]
ETA: even a google image search for "Broken AR-15 firing pin" didn't come up with anything to suggest that firing pins regularly break or "go bad".

I guess these repairs require a gunsmith, I would also assume they would need a gunsmith to clean their guns as well.
If you're shooting a rifle with a hot load or the wrong primers its possible for a hole to be blown through the primer which will allow hot gases to blow back against the firing pin.
If this happens enough times, it will easy away enough of the material at the tip of the firing pin to kill it.
But I seriously doubt that's the case here.

And yet the army still uses the M4...

This is fishy.

Well, heck! I ain't buying no Colt M4's anytime soon. With a failure rate that high Colt should reassess their production methods and material contractors.

Claims to have inside info... comment at the bottom by the author says rifles were mostly deadlined for bent barrels and failing no go gauges?
Doesn't add up with the "replace the firing pin", but what do you expect from journalists?

Has anyone here ever bent a barrel before??? While on patrol? On 1/3 of your rifles?

Yeah I'm also not buying this. These aren't long, pencil barrels. And they also aren't full-on combat patrols with grunts constantly hopping into/out of LAVs/Strikers/Bradleys.

I assumed that there would be some people here who were happy to hear that at least one federal law enforcement agency was being disarmed. [Sarcasm2]

Why this would be true for quite a few of the alphabet soup crowd...
BP is one of the ones I think should be armed to the teeth !
Besides I got good friends that are BP agents on the Southren Border.
I had a pitted firing pin on a new AR, they didn't respond. So, I'm not inclined to think they would care if some Colt pins were FUBAR. Hey! It's the BP! It's not like anyone in the administration gives a hoot wether they get their assigned job done!

I have seen high round count rifles with wear and peening on the back side of the firing pin retainer surface before but unless the BP is getting Iraq and Stan bring backs I couldn't envision the numbers reported.
Sounds more like an excuse to disarm the BP

There does not appear to be any recall coming from Colt- not that I can find... so they're throwing that term around, but it's not a manufacturer recall.

forget giving them guns.
just give them goody bags to hand out to the crimigrants. they could also set up tables and sign the crimigrants up for ss, welfare, wic, etc. sign them up to vote a few times, give them their drivers licenses and anything else we can think to make their way easier.
We already do this... [facepalm]
