View Full Version : Need ideas for garage sensor

I appear to be very needy lately.
I want to put a sensor/alarm on my garage door. That way when it is open and someone crosses the threshold an alarm will go off inside my house. A lot of times I will have my garage door open and be in and out of the house for a few moments at a time working on different projects and so on. I don't wanna close the door every time I go inside the house but I want to be warned if someone walks into the garage while I'm inside.
Maybe I'm paranoid but it will make me feel better. I am looking around at different products but am really not sure which project I should get.
Does anyone have anything like that?
You need a claymore. You'll know when someone trips it. [Coffee]

Simple to set up and they do not need to be permanently installed.
You may also want to put a camera on the area with a few days worth of storage.

Maybe your needing lap dance should be changed to Needy Petey ;)
Or these. BUT like the HD units the sensor band needs to be narrowed or you'll be getting alarms every time a cat walks by. It's easy to do.

Use this, but when you mount it, aim it into your garage so that the edge of the 120° beam is across your garage door.
It will take some playing with, but then you have a "beeeep" anytime someone comes into your garage.

Not for you but a general question. Why does anyone leave their garage door open when it's attached to your home?
To lure in thieves. That is what the claymores are for [Sarcasm2]

I would very much love to have claymores. It would probably only need one usage.

I just don't want to open and close it every time I go in and out of the house. If I plan on going inside for more than a couple minutes then I close the garage. I also want it in case it accidentally gets left open. It's rare but will give me peace of mind. Also, in the course of my patrol duties I have discovered that on occasion signals get crossed from other garage door openers and open yours by accident.
For security purposes I also don't have an access code panel on the outside.

Agreed. I sure don't.
My experience with these is for a piece of mountain property where you cannot see the entrance to the driveway from the house. This way anyone who is in the house knows when someone/something is on the driveway about 10-15 feet off the road.

You need an upgrade. Most of the new ones, even mine from 3 years ago when I bought this house, use rolling codes. If your garage door opens to other peoples remotes, that's not acceptable.

I actually got the idea from my grandparents farm driveway
On a related note- we rented a townhouse in Aurora for a while. During the spring, the sun would hit the sensors JUST right, and it would trigger the garage door to open. That might be something to keep in mind before using claymores or claxons by way of alarm...

It has never happened to me personally. Working as a police officer I have investigated numerous suspicious occurrences where this was the case. I am mainly wanting an extra layer of security and peace of mind in the event something gets forgotten or I end up inside the house for a few minutes or longer by accident.
spend a few extra bucks and get one from radio shack. the hf one eats batteries in comparison

Oh wise one thank you for chiming in. Will definitely take a look.
Also, I think it should be noted that additionally we park our cars in the garage but I still believe they should warm up on bitter mornings for at least a few minutes. The cars are locked however I would like a sensor up while the garage is open and I step back into the house.
I know I should probably stay with the car, but that's not going to happen.

That should fit the bill. Radio Shack also used to sell a cheap IR beam break door alarm system - they're all over Amazon now (as was posted elsewhere.)
I installed one of these, and a remote light switch as well that sends alerts to my phone if the door is open for longer than x minutes. I can then close the door, turn on/off the lights... Of course, when I'm traveling and the wife is home, I always call or text her first.

They also make models for older doors, and even have a setup that can be retrofitted to even older non-compatible stuff to remotely sense if the door is open or closed.

That is just about one of the most awesome things I have ever seen (mind you I don't get crazy on too much technology, the wife programs all the remotes).
The plus side is that I have a brand new house and brand new garage door opener....wait for it....made by chamberlain (I really am excited by the text alert thing).
I don't think you need to be overly complicated with a driveway sensor, because when the door is closed, no one will likely be able to get close enough to trip the sensors anyway.
EDIT: Oops, there were like 10 posts before I got mine in. Looks like you're taken care of at this point.

It's an app, but it does run always and alerts your phone.
Keep in mind the video shows the UNIVERSAL package for any opener. There's a sensor that mounts to the door. My link to Amazon is the one for newer Chamberlain openers and includes the WiFi internet gateway and a replacement wifi door panel.
On the off chance you already have an MyQ enabled opener, all you need is the MyQ Internet Gateway.

Hell no. I put my hours into that stupid transmission last month. Now I work on it 10 minutes at a time.

I have a two year old chamberlain opener that has programmable close times. I currently have it set to close after 5 mins of no activity in the garage. Doesn't alarm you or anything, but it prevents the door from accidentally staying open.

Your garage door should already have a IR sensor that keeps it from closing when an object is in the doorway and it turns on the garage door lights if you or some one enters or exits when the garage door lights timed out.
Just rig a 120 VAC buzzer or horn to the opener light circuit, and a switch for when you don't want it sounding.
Open the garage door wait for the Light to time out, most can be set for the time period, then turn on the switch for the alarm. When the sensor beam is broken, the light will come on and the alarm will sound.
