View Full Version : i need help from an ffl
So im 20 years old and due to me being layed off im forced to sell my guns. I have a hipoint handgun that my dad gave me when i turned 18 and i was wanting to make sure that i can legally transfer it to someone else. I know it cant be transfered to me from an ffl but what about the other way around ? Ive been looking around and cant really find anything on the subject. Also is there an ffl in greeley who would be willing to do the transfer(i read about some places that wont do it just because of their own policies). Any help would be appreciated.
You can definitely transfer it to someone else 21+ at an FFL. It's about the age of the buyer, not the seller.
Sweet that is what i thought. Now i just need to find an ffl that will do it

Any FFL that does face to face transfers I'm guessing? Since when do the forms ask for the age of the seller? All that matters is the buyer. Find a buyer and go to their favorite FFL.

Try tacticool arms on 13th st and 11th ave. I think it's 1028 13th st. I believe they do transfers for cheap.
Don't sell it. It came from your dad, don't look at it as Cash. Go get a job at McDonalds before you sell a gun your old man gave you. Sorry, that's my .02

It's a HiPoint..
And?
His old man gave it too him, I'd advise against getting rid of it also, hi point or not.
My old man, older than dirt, remembers his grandpa swingin around an old double barrel getting bunnies for the fam. It has long ago disappeared. I would absolutely love to pass a gun like that down the tree. The way things in this country are going even a slingshot might have value/necessity in a few generations. I remember what it is like to be a broke ass college kid, I ended up busting tires instead of selling stuff. Damn glad I did.

Also, the additional poll taxes (FFL fees) imposed on us by our wonderful Democratic State house, Senate and Governator will have MUCH more impact to a sale of a Hi-Point (in the $100-150 range) than they would for an EVIL AR-15 (in the $500-2000 range)...
The costs to sell it are a much higher percentage of it's sale price that it doesn't make much sense... What other options do you have?
I tend to agree, based on the source and the above discussion- keep it, find something else to sell
If I were closer, I could help more (with a job, work between jobs, etc...)
Good luck, God speed & I hope you can land on your feet without having to sell the farm (so to speak)
The other issue is if the buyer doesn't pass you cannot get it back since the ffl isn't allowed to sell to you.

I thought it has already been determined that the gun is never transferred/received/booked in by the FFL until the background check on the new buyer goes through so this idea that you might not get your gun back is a myth?
From the following post:
https://www.ar-15.co/threads/110807-How-private-transfers-now-work-in-Colorado-(background-checks-FTF-transfers-etc)
"ATF has since updated and corrected this information, releasing updated instructions to FFLs. It is now clear that, as long as a seller does not "relinquish" the firearm, they can leave with the gun at any point, without performing a background check.A 4473 (background check) is required for all transfers, and logging in/out of FFL books is still required before any FTF transfer can proceed. However, the BGC can happen prior to the transfer, and if the buyer fails, the seller can walk out. Note the $10 Colorado charges still gets charged to the FFL regardless, and you can bet your FFL is going to want their service fee, regardless of pass/fail, since they are taking the time.
Short version:
1) Buyer fills out 4473
2) FFL checks and records buyer ID, marks handgun/long gun/other (no SN# yet), and runs the BGC. CBI charges $10 at this point
3) If pass, FFL takes gun & confirms SN, enters gun into books, writes the SN# on the 4473, and logs the book out to buyer. Buyer/seller leave happy.
4) If fail, seller takes the gun and leaves. FFL did not take possession. FFL does not enter the gun into the books. 4473 gets filed (without SN/gun info)."
depends on what the ffl does. If they make a mistake new2ak's suffers.
if they log it first to save time or whatever reason they put it on the books
I hear you, but it's 100% up to the seller, if it's really something you're worried about. To take it to an extreme, if he does not hand over the gun, the FFL has no serial number to record. You don't need the S/N to run the BGC.
New2aks, I'd also vote for selling off something else (you mentioned guns plural) before you sell anything your dad gave you, hipoint or not. Your call of course, but you can always make/save more money, but I'd save a father's gift for near last on the list of things to sell...
Heck if it comes down to it, I bet there's a few of us who could come up with some day-work for you if you needed to make up the couple hundred bucks to hold on to the gun.
