If the news report is correct on his age (51), I'm pretty sure it's not Richard K.
As with everyone above, regardless of which member it is, hoping for a positive outcome.

Do we have anyone familiar with that area? I'm willing to volunteer Thursday or Friday to do some scouting. Who knows... snow melts, things change. Might be able to see something S&R didn't when the wind was in their faces...

RIP, brother.
Thank you for your account Christine.
To family and friends who may or may not be aware of our family crisis, it is with a very heavy heart that i post this message. On behalf of my brother and family we thank you all for your prayers. My little bro, Richard Kothanek went on a 4 hour hunt in the mountains of Colorado Saturday morning with a friend. Rich went to hunt on a ridge when unknowingly, a winter storm came in. He was separated and lost in the snowstorm. He did not return to base. There was a search and recue effort immediately launched, without success. Due to the extreme conditions, the lack of supplies and gear Rich had with him, and the absence of any signs of movement since Saturday night, the Colorado rescue team called off the operation today. Rich is somewhere on the mountain. The elements have been deemed not survivable. The team plans on returning for a recovery effort in June. Keep my brother in your hearts and rest in peace Richie. You will always be mom & dad's baby boy and our lil bro.

Elevation at frasier is 8500, he was on a ridge above that. The snow is not going to melt until spring. I read the facebook post by his brother, very sad decision to make.
If I thought it was feasible I'd go with you Steve.

Thinking the same. I could be packed, ready and on the way by Wednesday afternoon.
If they are calling for Spring retrieval, there is little/no hope of survival.
Do we have a screen name here?
Sad news.

That's where I've hunted for the past five years and that's a lot of land to cover. I could probably muster up my hunting buddies if need be but this time of year I bet its pretty impassible before the reservoir, I think ah pook's right, S&R called off the search for a reason. It's terrible news, prayers for his family.

Oh, man. I camp up there regularly, and the terrain is unforgiving in this type of weather. Acres of downed trees on slopes make movement extremely exhausting even in proper conditions.
I wish his family all the best.

Man this is terrible news. prayers for him and his family! I got lost for a good 2 hours when my GPS went haywire and even though I had a compass as a backup I hadnt taken a starting point reading! I had an idea and a map which proved benificial but man you can never be too prepared! always plan for the worst and hope for the best.
I would also love to help, but I dont know the area at all and im guessing they had a pretty good reason for calling it off! Very sad!
Is there anything we can do for his family?
Not sure if i can think of anything worse than the realization of having to leave a loved one up on the mountain alone in those conditions.
Prayers for him and his family.

Whoa.... as a avid outdoorsman, my heart goes out to him. I cant even imagine getting caught in a storm. Prayers to the family.
As as an avid outdoorsman, you should imagine getting caught in a storm and prepare for it. My grandfather taught me at a young age to carry what you need to survive for at least 2 day every time you venture out in the woods. Some of my friends make fun of the pack I carry, but if you get lost or stuck for a few days it is worth it. It only takes you not being prepared once to end you.
On a side note, I understand what the family is going through. My moms dad was lost in a storm in a downed airplane many years ago, and the family had to call off the search. We did not find his plane till the next summer. My heart goes out to the family.
Crappy situation all the way around. My condolences to his friends and family.
How do we know he was a forum member here and still no screen name has been mentioned?

I believe Rich is a member. I met Rich from Jason (TDYRanger). I lost Jason phone number when my phone crashed last summer. I sent Jason a PM and he has not been here to reply. Jason and Rich were hunting buddys.
Dont forget Jason in your prayers. I cant image the pain hes going thru right now.

Good to have closure, sad it had to be this way. It sounds like Rich's dad held on long enough to know what happened to his son. May they both find eternal peace.
I've reached out to TDYRanger to attempt to find out of Rich was a member here & what his username was. We try to honor our members who are no longer with us.
