I'm not liking my iron sights so looking at a red dot or scope. Anyone have a preference?
The red dots look like a better option as I'm not a hunter needing magnification. But never used a red dot.
Cabelas has the red dot on sale for $499
Depends on your needs. If you mostly shoot at targets 100 yards or less, I think red dots are the best choice (I am partial to Aimpoints but EoTechs are fine too). But if you regularly shoot at targets at greater than 200 yards, I think a magnified optic would be a better choice. One downside to red dots is some people with corrected vision don't see crisp dots. They get star bursts or comet tails. You should definitely try before you buy.
Primary Arms sells their brand of red dots and magnified optics for really good prices. I am sure they will have some kind of fire sale over the holidays. They may be a good option for trying the 2 types.

512 for $350 right now at PSA for thanksgiving sale.
Also a great deal on aimpoint pro, which is probably a better optic if you would like a "tube" style vs the holographic.

Just saw the aim point and looks good for me. Now to decide if Amazon prime for 396 or 378 shipping from psa.

I've used aimpoints, Eotechs, Primary Arms, Trijicons, and chinese knock-offs. If you just want a functional red dot for shooting up to 200yds, I would really recommend a Primary Arms red dot. They are significantly cheaper than aimpoint, but their quality rivals Aimpoint's.
I think you might be really happy with something like this:

Damn. Thanks for that badger. Going to cancel my aim point and get the micro. Will save me some money so I can save up for a magnified scope as well.

While I love my PA red dots, saying their quality rivals Aimpoint is going a bit far. Are they really good range optics for the money? Hell yes. For the average user who likes to punch holes in paper on a one way range a PA optic will serve them well. Are they built to the same quality standard as Aimpoint? No. Even PA will tell you this. A duty/HD weapon should have an Aimpoint. Range toys can rock a PA.

Fair enough. How many people here are buying optics for a duty weapon? I'm not a private security contractor, so none of my weapons are "duty" weapons. The likelihood of ever taking any of my rifles into a combat situation is slim-to-none. If that day ever comes, I'll try not to run my rifle over with a truck or intentionally smash the optics on the ground repeatedly. Honestly, if that day ever comes, I think gun optics will be the least of my worries.

It would be a full tank of gas and unobstructed back road, for us.

This is true.

I am my own private security contractor. Therefore my home defense ARs are equipped with Aimpoints since they may be called upon to defend my family. I would consider them "duty" weapons. All my other toys tend to rock value optics. I think a good percentage of people intend to use at least one of their firearms in the home defense role. If so they should be aware there's a good reason why some optics are cheap and some are not. It's all about intended use. I understand what you're saying and yes most people will be fine with a value optic like a PA. Just don't hold them as equals. They aren't. They have very different intended uses.

I love the EOTech reticle, but I got sick of buying batteries for it. The batteries made it not worth the high price tag for my needs.
After I bought a 512, I actually bought several Bushnell HOLOsights and loved them. EOTech licensed Bushnell to build a civilian market version of the 512 that took "N" size batteries and they sold for about $250. I sold my 512 to free up some cash, but I won't sell my last HOLOsight because I love that dang reticle.
Edit: This is the Holosight I am talking about... not the weird shaped one: http://www.opticsplanet.com/bushnell-holosight.html
