Just want to let my fellow space nerds know, the Orion spacecraft test launch will be Wednesday. Once they get it going I was curious, who on this forum would actually want to go on it? I think it would be cool to actually be on itand go to Mars, what is your opinion?

Thats a LONGGGG flight, and one way at that! I'd go.

I would be down for it as well, lots of interesting stuff up there

I'm staying on this rock. There are no gun stores on Mars.

Tempting but I don't fly, so will stay on Terra firma.

No thanks. I love space and all that jazz (I work in the space industry), but that would be a really long, lonely, and personally unfulfilling trip. I'd rather enjoy life here with my family and not worry about dying alone on a distant planet. [Dunno]

Also, for those interested, SpaceflightNow has a launch schedule and details of all planned launches through 2015.

Satellite stuff. :)

I work with the AEHF constellation.... Nothing too exciting, but it's a good start.

One of the coolest things I ever got to do was ride on the Reduced Gravity Aircraft at Johnson Space Center. We were doing experiments for the HUNCH program. Warren Tech High School (JeffCo) has two of their experiments going to the ISS for the Astronauts to work on. One is a plant experiment the other is the one I was a part of - How do you cook and egg in reduced gravity. As part of the week long Houston trip we got many behind the scenes tours of JSC. Here are a few pics I was able to take. We actually got to see the parachute assembly of Orion and a mockup of Orion for the engineers used for design testing and engineering. Got to meet Chris Cassidy as he was coming out of the Neutral Buoyancy Lab. He was training for his mission to the ISS.

I am looking forward to Orion. Spaceflight is awesome, I would pay more in taxes every year if it went only to the space program. This is one thing that should never go away, human beings are explorers and we should never stop.

Food Lab at Johnson Space Center - Pretty cool what they do there, example - they have to take the salt off of the crackers before packaging them.

OSIRIS-REx Looks pretty cool. Are you on contract until the scheduled return? What sort of work do you do specifically (if you don't mind my asking)?

Cool story and pics, dude. I totally agree with your statement above. It really frustrates me that people want to ditch space exploration or slash the budget, but companies like SpaceX give me a major hard-on because they are leading the way in spaceflight innovation, and as a bonus, they are (technically) a private company. Maybe I have a man-crush on Elon Musk. So what. [Dunno]

I would have enjoyed joining that Mars One project, even though I know I'm probably a horrible candidate for space travel :P Oh well.

I'm on loan to Osiris while they work on my clearance, but I've also put in a request to work on trident missiles so hopefully that will go through. I am a technician so I am the one who actually builds sub assemblies and the spacecraft. Right now we are working on the sample return canister and the arm that picks up the asteroid sample.

That's awesome dude. I would love to have a job like that. Do you have an engineering or space-related degree?

Hey honey badger small world. I got to design and herd a bunch of the front end RF stuff on that bird. Enjoy AEHF, probably one of the last "battle star Galactica" sized birds ever.

It has it's good and bad days. Everything is crazy expensive, so there isn't any room for mistakes. I went through the airframe portion of an aircraft mechanic school years ago, but just an engineering associates degree. The guy I got hired in with had no experience whatsoever so I think it's more of a who you know type of thing unfortunately. I'd love to take some pictures for you guys, but that's a big no no here.

Nothing nearly as cool as what you guys are talking about, that's for sure.

1st wife's cousin's kid (Robert) works for NASA at JSC. Was working with main propulsion for the shuttles. Had the misfortune to be working the re-entry for Columbia when it burned up on re-entry. He's now the main engine lead for Project Morpheus.

The robonaut program is really cool. Sending autonomous robots to a destination with the idea of having them build infrastructure in advance of astronauts is where the future of exploration is IMO. The robonauts are a cross-development program with NASA and GM. Won't need much human interaction with auto manufacturing some day. Rob mentioned a demo he watched where the parts for a GM door assembly were dumped on a bench. The robonaut identified the parts in the pile and selected the parts in order and put the door together without human intervention.

HB knows I'm part of this niche too. Many of you might actually be customers for my workplace.

Curious how many of us work @ Schriever that could get together @ the JNIC cafeteria for lunch some day.

Neato. Can you please fix AFSCN? [LOL]

Oh good heavens yes. Until recently I was the sole admin for the AFSCN's largest DCC user. Glad that after 7 years I finally passed that baton to a group of unwitting suckers.

Even as a retiree, I'm only allowed to eat the lunch meal @ the Dish on weekends or holidays. Because I'm a cheap bugger I go to the JNIC about twice a year (bring my lunch every day) - but I'd make an exception for COAR folks.

For the record, unless you could get me a hyperspace capable vehicle, I have no interest in traveling within the "final frontier".

Yeah, I always bring my lunch. The Dish is cheap, but it's not very healthy. I'd love to meet up sometime over lunch. :)

Purpose built to hang onto the ISS. We'd look pretty weird if we had different sets of legs depending on what we needed to do that day. [panic]

I've only been out to Schriever once for an orientation tour. Pretty much anything I need from you guys is stuff that's already collected on behalf of the contract, so there's no perceived need for me to go, and no chance for lunch with you guys.

Here is a live-feed with coverage on the launch. Pretty boring right now, but it should be a bit more exciting in the hour leading up to the launch and an hour or so afterwards.
