View Full Version : Entry level price/quality?
Now that things are coming back to reality price wise, I want to pick up an AK. What are some good brands in the entry level category? I see most WASR s around the $600 price point. What about the M&M M10s? I seem to read good stuff about them but they run around $700?
I've read that the WASRs have gotten a bit better since their poor reputation. Can anyone verify that? Any ones to completely avoid?

Best bang for the buck. There is nothing a $900 AK does any better IMO than a $500 one. Outside fit, finish, features. You'd be hard pressed to tell the difference between a good AK built off a nodak spud or receiver flat, then one ready to go from a vendor. YMMV

Get one of the Yugo NPAPs or OPAPs from Atlantic Firearms. They claim that they inspect each rifle they send out and back it up with their own warranty.

NPAP = $529

Lol ! Hey, you said you don't take cash to your grave, right? I have to wait for this one but just doing some legwork in the meantime.
When it comes to AK's there isn't much the 1k+ do that the 400 versions won't. Some might be prettier or have a different country's name on it for the extra money. I have a Romanian SAR-1 I paid 300 for years ago and it has chewed up over 2000 rounds of Wolf, Bear and Soviet MilSurp without a jam that wasn't due to a bad Tapco mag I don't use anymore. You don't buy AK's for sub MOA groupings at the range anyway. You buy it because when you pull the trigger it goes bang and a nice .30 cal projectile comes out the barrel really fast.

Only if done off board. Most if not all GB's ended up in the shitter.

Roger that, Kazoo. Are you interested if I get a response back from the company? I'll keep it to emails/pm's.

At one point in time I had 14 different Kalishnakov pattern rifles. Pre ban, post ban, Hungarian, Yugoslavian, Egyptian, Chinese, Bulgarian etc.
Didn't make a bit of difference.
They all did the same thing, sling 7.62 x 39 rounds downrange to Minute of Man standards.

Currently they most respected AK vender is Atlantic Firearms. Buy a Npap or WASR from them with confidence. Inspect your gun at the FFL before you sign the BGC, if there are any problem(canted sight, sticky action), give them a call right away and they will get that gun back and send a new one to you without any extra cost. They have been including random gifts with their WASRs lately, like T-Shirts, hats.... And last time I checked their WASRs sells for $515 plus shipping.
If you want a Arsenal SLR-107 side folder PM me, I have one unfired, we can work out a deal, below retail price for sure.

No, I haven't purchased an AK in 4 ~ years. It's a WASR. From them or other vendor it's the same AK. It's not a $1K AR. A lot of shooters have issues transitioning from one platform to the other. Once one get's past and accepts what it is, you either keep or sell it. If i had gun money not slated for other projects, i'd probably buy 2 of them. 2016 is down the road. With the every clown for gun safety movement gathering steam in liberal leaning states like OR, i can assure you that movement will reappear here. Probably around the time the Holmes trial starts.
REMEMBER SENSIBLE GUN SAFETY COULD HAVE AVERTED THE SHOOTING. [pileoshit]

I bought an AMD-65 from them a couple years ago. Shipped right out, they were good to go back then.
ETA: my purchase was before the new laws, you should call to ask about them pulling the mags to ship here now.
Ok that's what I'm trying to find out, planning on picking up an ak in the next few days.

I currently only have 2 AK type rifles. An Arsenal SGL21 (paid just over $800 about 5yrs ago / now $1250 from FIME) and a M&M M10-762 i got used for $475. They perform the same in my experience.

Here's a good deal. Built on the Hungarian FEG receiver.

The front end looks ugly, but rest assured it's a shooter - best part is it is on a FEG receiver.
Do your research and be careful with used low end stuff and some new. My fist AK was a Polish under folder built from a parts kit. The stamped receiver was poorly bent and the rails did not always function correctly causing a jambs. Sold it to a friend for parts only.
I now have two and because of the bad experience I went with a used Arsenal SLR101S milled Bulgarian 7.62x39 and a used Arsenal SGL31 stamped Russian 5.45x39. Two very different but similar high quality guns from opposite ends of the AK spectrum, could not be happier and would not want a less quality product. Just because a gun functions does not make it the one to buy. It's sort of funny with AK's how people will say who cares about quality and turn around and tell you to not to buy a Hi-Point. Just because somebody can copy a product does not mean the product is as good as the original.
A lot of AK's in this country are low quality because early on the ban on Chinese guns and general demand out stripped supply of quality guns. Also back then Americans expected AK's to be significantly lower in quality compared to an AR. Now days savvy buyers are seeing and demanding higher quality AK's. Don't buy something you will regret and loose money trying to get rid of it. Nothing wrong with paying for a name if you are getting quality or perceived quality in the eyes of the public, in the form of higher value and resale.

I got an AMD-65 from them when they were $399. I traded it and kind of regret it. I was happy with the trade, I just should have bought 2 when they were $399. I'll get another one at some point. Great gun!
I like the AMD65's that they were selling back then for $399 that had the shorter 12.5" barrel and a pinned and welded long muzzle break. I always wanted one with that short factory barrel to do a SBR using a standard muzzle break. Not sure I like this new one with the long barrel as well.

ok so whats up with FEG reciever? is it just a higher quality part?

this AMD65 looks kind of strange, can you use standard AKM furniture if you want?
I guess all it needs is flip the gas tube for a railed tube, to mount the optic.

Yes the FEG is a higher quality part,it is a true Hungarian made ak receiver.Same ones they use for their military, minus the auto hole and notch in the rail. Most others are just a copy.
As far as furniture you would have to mod standard furniture to fit.The lower handguard has slightly different contour up front where the retainer is and just a tad shorter. And to put on a standard non folding stock you would have to swap out the rear trunnion., meaning you'd have to remove the rivits and re drill for the new one.

You want to find one of the Zastava PAP rifles with the hammer forged chrome lined barrels, those are the best on the market now for the money.
I'd rather have a romanian then a us made chromo bbl. (unless it was an underfolder for like $400)

The gas tube and hand guard are specific, shorter. Ultimak makes an AMD railed tube though. FEG is original Hungarian rec.

I guess I didn't look at the link specs. I'd want the 12.5" I'll have a look at it again.

the handgaurd on an amd65 is the same length as any other akm. its the gas tube and piston that are shorter.
here's my clone of an east german MPi-kms72s "spetzialwerke" I used an original barrel amd65 kit and simply replaced the handgaurd retainer with an akm one (couldn't find a german one at the time) also I shortened an akm gas tube and flared it with a hammer, torch and a ratchet extension

^ thanks, good to know about the hand guard. If I get another one I would probably change it out then.

After talking with Rachael Ray. It's been made my attention there are so many below $600 AK's on the market that scream top quality. it might be a shame to shop by price rather build / what a vendor is offering.

Due diligence and some web time could net you a better price than Atlantic is offering.

unless you want a specific ak that isn't offered as a factory build its better to buy right now just take a look at what atlantic has for sale and you'll see what I mean
