View Full Version : Help Me Decide - Suppressor or Revolver

Looking at spending *about* $1,000. Trying to decide which choice to make between a suppressor for the .22's or a companion revolver for my Henry Big Boy in 45LC.

I don't 'need' either one. In fact, I already have a Cimarron SAA in 45LC, but since it may have issues with modern robust 45LC loads, I want to get something a bit more stout, hence, have settled on the S&W 460V. It has the added advantage of being able to chamber MUCH more powerful 454 Casull and 460 Magnum rounds which sound like fun . . . at least, for a few rounds.

Competing with the S&W is a new suppressor. This would be my/our first entry into NFA which, alone, makes it appealing. We have several firearms that can accommodate a suppressor, but I think I'll start with one for a 22LR rifle. Between the cost of the suppressor, the tax stamp and transfer fees, the estimated cost is about the same as the S&W 460. This assumes I can prepare the NFA Trust myself, otherwise, getting started into the NFA world will end up being a bit more expensive than the revolver.

So what do you think? Which option would you choose - and why?

You can get a great .22lr suppressor for a lot less than $1k. And I would definitely choose that over a revolver. :)

Get the can. You will love it

Go with the can.

Full power 460 sucks. Full power 454 isnt that bad, but 460 isnt fun in any way, shape or form.

Cans are fun, a Spectre II .22 would be very nice.

If you're looking for a good 45 Colt revolver look at a Smith 25-7 or 25-9, those will handle 9g of Unique but they won't handle Ruger Blawkhawk loads.

I also would say can, but I disagree with Hoser 460 IS fun, for like 1 cylinder, then it's just obnoxious [Coffee]

I had one for a few years, killed a whitetail with it, and sold it. In all honesty, it is quite possibly one of the most obnoxious guns I've ever fired the concussion is ridiculous for a handgun recoil wasn't terrible, but it wasn't exactly light either. That and the fricken thing weighs as much as some of my long guns.

The only gun I've ever fired that was worse is my brother's S&W airweight 44 mag. That's like hitting a steel pole with an aluminum bat every time you touched it off.

I'd consider something larger caliber wise, then a 22. You will too after shooting a 22 suppressed. YMMV

Can for sure.

I have threaded barrels in .223 and 6.8. The long-term plan is to have suppressors for those as well as the 22's, but if you recommend a can for the centerfires - which one would you get first?

223 for both or a 6.8, tough call.

Can, as well. The 460 I think would be interesting for a few shots, and just a PITA after that.

I'm going to go against the grain, and say Revolver. Simply because i'm not fortunate to have any experience with suppression lol. Hopefully that can change.

He really said get a can, in code. The popular vote is the best one IMHO as well.

LOL, I forgot to say "no pun". I can't disagree with your statement, I CAN imagine a CAN is a blast.

Get the can. It will be less than $1,000 total.

A .22lr can will be $300-400, plus the $200 tax stamp. Much cheaper than $1k.

Voting can. Yes we can!

Some places are running specials where you buy a centerfire can and get a 22 for $100. Where? not looking or i'd buy more, do your own leg work ;)

I'd say revolver, but only because I'm getting a Ruger in .44 and I have only ever fired 2 rounds suppressed and that was from a 9mm.

Both? Get an AAC Pilot 2 for $260 shipped from SilencerShop.com which qualifies for the $200 Damn the Man rebate. Then buy something from their site, sell it or trade it towards a revolver and have about $800 to spend on a nice revolver. Whatever that is.

I love my revolver, but I love cans more. Little cans are fun, big cans are even more fun. :D

I have a few AAC Pilot2 coming in any day now. I have them priced pretty good if you are interested. Oh...and I vote can!

Since we have a clear commercial post here, but I don't find it egregious enough for removal.... Lets just have some fun at his expense.

Anyone think that To Bear Arms realizes that his $30 private party transfer violates state law, which sets a $10 limit (+$10 CBI Fee)?

Naw, it is pretty cool. It is the Evil Roy competition model which they claim is worked over by a gunsmith. It seems like it had some smoothing work done. My only concern is that I might inadvertently mistake some of the hotter 45LC loads that I run in the Henry rifle. From what Cimarron claims, the Evil Roy will handle heavy loads, so probably not a problem - I am just being overcautious.
