I have had a flu since yesterday, 102.2 it was yesterday. Now this morning it is at 103.7. I took theraflu, NyQuil, ibuprofen, nothing seems to work. What do you guys take when you get this junk? I don't want to go to the Drs cause it's just a flu. Or it's Ebola 😁

If your temp is over 103 go to a hospital now.

"Just a flu" ... The Spanish Flu was pretty damned deadly. Go to the doc if your self-treatment isn't working and your fever continues to rise.

" I don't want to go to the Drs cause it's just a flu." Just a note: between 3000 to 49000 people die of the Flu each year in the US. It's mostly elderly patients (90%) but the other 10% are young adult in perfect health. 100% of the death for the young adults are preventable if proper care is given in time.

Supposedly a rare variant called H3N2 is running around. I had a fever, I felt like I was burning up, but temp was 95.6F. I downed lots of cough medicine. Worse flu I ever had. Symptoms started November 16 and I still have a cough. I'm still tired from this bout of the flu.

If you truly have influenza, go to the doctor. There is only about a 48 hour window from the onset of symptoms for you to start Tamiflu (antiviral). If you try to tough it out and wait too long, you lose your chance to get any relief from the Rx.

To to top it off, the flu shot is largely ineffective this year.

You should already be at a docs or with that temp the ER. No kidding around. You're at the point your brains and other vitals start shutting down

I didn't know that bit about 104* temperatures. Get better soon, Bunny! I hope the docs are able to get your fever down quickly.

I don't think I've had a fever that high. When I get the flu, I crawl in bed and pile on every blanket I can reach and sweat it out.

Don't play with a temp that high(103.7), you may even want to have somebody drive you in case you pass out..... It can be THAT bad, depending on several factors. We all want to play the tough guy but it can get real serious real fast.

The OP is beyond tamiflu. Right now IF he took go to the Doc / ER advice, they will have him on IV drip.

You are correct. H3N2 is the predominate strain this year. It is hitting the elderly hard and long term care facilities are really getting hit hard. The flu vaccine this year is only about 48% effective. The CDC is shifting focus from Ebola to the flu. It could be a really nasty flu season.

Last time I had a temp that high, I was already in the ICU and I started to hallucinte pretty regularly, was kinda weird, once that started the pain and alot of the otehr discomfort went away, but I was seeing some seriously weird chit.

I wish Tamiflu wasn't RX. You need to take it so quickly after developing symptoms that wasting time scheduling a trip to the Dr (who are all booked solid) to get a RX pretty much makes sure you won't get it in time.

...like this year was 'special'. Their predictive hit-rate sucks. I always do worse when I get a flu shot than not, so I don't do them anymore.

Great to hear you're doing better Bunny!

As a pharmacist you all gave great advice. I also agree with the info on the flu vaccine. It is hit or miss each year and only a best guess as to what strain will be predominate in the US. Tamiflu is marginally effective once you have the flu. Studies show you only get over symptoms one day earlier than without it. Palliative care for temperature control, fluids etc are far more important.

As always your best prevention is hand washing with soap and water.

I've just decided to skip colds and the flu for the last several years. It's easier that way. So far, so good. [ROFL1]

FWIW, I've never had a flu shot. I grew up in a household where my father was a pediatrician, my mom was a clinical pathologist, and my sister is a veterinarian, so I got exposed to pretty much everything I wasn't already immunized for a long time ago. +1 on the hand washing!

I guess that seemed like a silly question but after a certain age you get a booster flu shot. Is that any better than the regular ?

The senior citizen "booster" isn't a "booster" per se, but a higher antigen load in one injection to provoke a stronger immune response.
They've also tested it (and tests are ongoing) in various semi-immune-compromised populations like HIV, etc.

Even with the higher antigen load it is only marginally (less than 1%) more effective than the regular flu shot. I can understand if their immune response was compromised or a nursing home gets hit early in the season and you want the population to be immunized faster. Other that that it really has no advantage over the regular shot. I had such a problem trying to push sales of one over the other just because we made more money on the high dose.

We had seniors wanting to wait for the high dose when we had no idea when the backorder would be received. It's the mindset they get it for free so they want the "best" product.

As stated it was not a great match with what is showing up. I just started seeing consistent Tamiflu coming from ER's and other facilities getting positive influenza tests. Flu is more of a problem with elderly and young that can lead to other complications that kill people. For the rest of us it wipes us out but we bounce back. On the whole Tamiflu gets you over the symptoms a day earlier but for the young or old it could be a live saver. I would probably take the preventive dosing if someone in my family came down with it.

Wash hands frequently. Same with family members. Especially when the kids come home from school before they touch everything in the house (refrigerator, TV remote, light switches etc)
