View Full Version : Stolen Valor? Anybody current or former army ranger?
I was in the army before, but tonight I ran into a friend of a friend who was wearing ACUs Sporting a Ranger tab, everything he said does not add up to him ever going to Ranger school, he said he did Ranger school at Fort Leonard Wood. And he is part of the 75th Ranger Battalion, he is grossly out of shape for army regs and does not fit the part in my billing. Just wondering if there is any way to really tell if he is being honest, or if he is full of shit and should remove that tab? He was even wearing his marksman badge on his ACUs
If you ran into him at the Army Surplus store, I'd say he's faking.

He is probably a ranger alright, a Rexall Ranger..........

Lol, true.
i will ask him, I know a lot of people don't see it as a big deal, but you learn everything in the military and for somebody just to slap it on it's kind of insulting
I wasn't Ranger but I do know all of them do their school at Ft Benning and are only stationed at Benning, Hunter Army Airfield and Ft Lewis. Or were last I was in. I was a Black hawk crew chief so I was deployed with and flew some of them out to their missions in Afghanistan. I could only ever dream of being able to go to Ranger School.
ask him what color the boat house is at Hereford.
Ranger Training is Fort Benning.
That's off ronin I just got it lmao
also, is the forum running some sort of contest? who can make the most threads in a month?

I am sorry if I created to many threads, really didn't know it was a wrong thing to do
Well if you had been a Ranger, you would know!

Maybe it was a ranger MTT? I know before I got out they opened ranger school to many more people than whoever it was open to before. Going to ranger school is one thing, being in the ranger Batt is another.
That's what I was thinking to, I went to Benning for basic so knew they were the training grounds of the Rangers.

We need to take this in bites.
As said School is based out of Benning and the 75th is out of Benning. A marksman badge on ACU's? Sorry but the last uniform that was a duty and a class "B" was the old tan/Khaki that was shelved in 83 or so. Some tabs like the EIB, EFMB, and others are authorized for wear with the ACU's but a stupid bolo badge?
Had many friends in the 75th and supported them when i was at Ft Benning but after seeing what I saw I said "no thanks" to going RIP. I may be wrong but I can always check tomorrow when I go to work....

Ask him what was served for breakfast at Dahlonega
No I am sure you are correct. I have my CFMB that I earned, that was on ACUs along with my air assault (yes, I know, dopes on ropes) but have never seen anyone wear a damn marksman badge lol

One of my all-time favorites.

I'm from 75th Ranger Regiment
Here's the breakdown:
1) Ranger tab is awarded for completing the 63 day school and is authorized for wear on the ACU uniform. Any unit can send people to Ranger school and earn their tab. It DOES NOT make them a Ranger.
2) 75th Ranger Regiment: Upon volunteering 4 times and successfully completing RASP (Ranger Assessment and Selection Program) or RIP/ROP (Ranger Indoctrination Program, pre 2005), you are assigned to one of the 3 Ranger Battalions or their support companies. Then are you authorized to wear the tan beret and the 1st, 2d, 3d, or 75th scroll.
3) 75th RTB (Ranger Training Brigade): These are Ranger school instructors, OPFOR, and support personnel for Ranger school at Ft. Benning, GA; Delogonia, GA; and Eglin AF, FL (3 phases of RS). They are authorized to wear the tan beret (although most never do) and wear the Ft. Benning "Follow Me" patch. They ARE NOT Rangers since they are non deployable and not a combat unit, although some of the RIs were previously.
4) Pre-74: lots of individual companies from pre WWII to Vietnam are considered Ranger Companies. List is easily found via google.
If someone is falsely wearing the tab then a call to Ranger Training Brigade will confirm their award of the Ranger tab or not. There is a lost of everyone who has attempted and completed that school, organized by class number.
If someone is falsely wearing the scroll for members of the 75th Ranger Regiment, then a call to the 75th Rgt. RTSB will confirm if they are or ever were assigned to the 75th Ranger Regiment. This sometimes can fall under the stolen valor act if they are using the false award for monetary gain as 75th is a special operations unit.
With all that being said, when in doubt, ask for their DD-214 (if feasible) to confirm anything if it is for a job or marrying your sister. Other than that, lots of airsoft kids run around with scrolls and shit trying to be cool. We don't give a shit. As Mick-boy has said, "it's difficult to care about grown men playing dress up."

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, right?
I feel like this thread is about to turn into a Batt Boy meet and greet.

Only if they're out, though. Well said, but getting a DD214 from someone still on AD might be difficult [coffee]
Also, I learned a couple things from your list, that's pretty neat. As a still active friend of mine says: "Rangers might lead the way, but they still ask Intel for maps..." ;)
Going to lunch with them today.... Stay tuned

Ask him for his Ranger Class Number. He probably won't know it but if he does, you can look it up and find him. Again, it sounds like this is bs.
Here is the link: http://www.benning.army.mil/infantry/RTB/RTBList.html
Okay so I met with them, he does not remember his Ranger class number LOL, I brought up the airborne school and as far as I know it is still at Fort Benning correct? He told me he did airborne at Fort Rucker, I told him that I did Air assault at Fort Campbell and he got defensive saying they do not do it there. My friend brought up the movie American sniper, and of course his friend chimed in saying he knew Chris Kyle personally. Sounds for this shit to me. I do not know how long ranger school is he said it was the hardest eight weeks of his life, I know it's longer than that. None of it makes sense I called him out and told him I don't believe it one bit. He is in a reserve unit and always has been, I didn't think Rangers were in the reserve unit. Nothing against the reserves but I just don't remember anything closely related to that
One of my friends is a reservist and is attached to one of the Army Special Forces groups. I'm pretty sure he actually works for the CIA, as his civilian job is with TSA, but he spends a LOT of time overseas competing as a member of the National Guard Biathlon team. Very mysterious, and never talks about his work. Posted up a few pics of his last deployment in Asscrackistan, had a beard. http://www.northeastshooters.com/vbulletin/images/emoticons//tinfoilhatsmile.gif

If he doesn't remember his class number, then he didn't go to Ranger School. Everyone remembers when they left that place.
The other stuff could be legitimate. There was a time when Air Assault school was taught at Ft. Rucker. In fact, there are still MTTs (mobile training teams) that will teach AA at different installation. I earned my AA badge at Camp Gruber, OK, so it is possible.
As stated earlier, units get slots to Ranger School, so just because he is in the Reserves doesn't mean that is automatically a fraud. There are no Ranger units in the Guard or Reserve, only in the 75th. However, based on your comments I think he is full of shit.

There are SF units in the Guard.
Ok, he said he deployed but wasn't allowed any pictures to be taken, so naturally none exists. I figured he would have remembered his class number if anything? Hell I remember my class number from medic school.....

Nope. Longer. It was 72 days when I went through. I am not sure how many now. I think it is 63 or so.
Edit - I guess that is about 8 weeks. LOL.

SO, what color is the boat house at Hereford?
And no he isn't a Ranger. I am not nor a former Ranger. But he is not. No one even knows where FT. Leonard Wood is. Not even the people that went there. A lot of units host a Pre-Ranger School. Of which I attended one in Virginia. It is a prep course for Ranger school at the unit level. FT. Leonard Wood could have a Pre-Ranger course.
It's more than "kind of insulting"

@#$@$ XM68 is apparently an obscure designation for an aimpoint sight. How is it I can make some bullshit up out of my hiney and it ends up being tangible. Anyway, I think my point still stands.
Just read your last post and thought, "Wait a minute, XM68, that sounds familiar." For a minute thought I might be a full o chit poser myself. [hammer]
Rather than publicize all possible information known to a ranger, just throw them a blind question.... aka, lie. Don't do it while attacking them. If your incredibly hostile, a poser will react accordingly. If you act friendly, and act more knowlegable on a subject than they are, a poser will be inclined to agree with you - always. A real ranger would be inclined to slap you for asking stupid questions.
You can pull them endlessly out of your ass.
For example:
So rather than try to elicit all possible knowledge about rangers to make it easier for these dicks to find it, just use basic psychology to feel them out.
I worked with such a liar once. He knew everything about everything. His stolen valor thing was he was a squid and somehow assisted SEALS in the PI. Highly doubtful.
So one day we were working in front of a slaughter house, as we got out of the truck I told another employee that watch the Squid probably knows something about a slaughter house. This was in southern California so knowledge would be unusual. As we were working I started with oh that would be interesting to tour the slaughter house.
The squid replied oh my uncle used to work at one, and then I kept asking more inane questions. It took everything to hold it together until me and the other guy could get back in the truck to drive to a new location. We were dying of laughter.

To your first question: "How the f*** should I know?" [Coffee]
And I do know where Fort Lost-in-the-woods is... Not strictly because that hell hole was where I did my basic training, but because I drove by it on my way home from ETSing in 2010... it's in the void between St. Louis and Springfield. No, I'm not kidding, there is a great big void between those two cities... There is absolutely nothing! Even the training areas on post are devoid of anything interesting.
And I really like Foxtrot's idea. We did that with one guy who claimed to be SF... not only didn't he know what an 18B was (although he claimed to be one), but we asked if he did training on the QBB-95. He went into a story about how they used it and deployed with it. When it came time to call him out I said "Really? You deployed using a Chinese light machine gun? I've only seen them, never actually got to hold one!" He felt about 10" tall after that.
