A friend of mine started a company a little while back with the purpose of making AR style mags with a better grip texture than other current magazines. He created the company HexMag (http://hexmag.com/) in his shop here in Colorado. Using a polymer similar to other manufacturers, he designed the magazines with a few distinct improvements over other currently produced AR magazines. First, they are light weight...extremely light weight. I don't have a scale available to weigh them but in a side by side comparison it is obvious there is a difference. It feels like more than just 1 or 2 ounces. Secondly, they are durable. The staff at HexMag (and several volunteers, of course) have done lots of drop tests and other crazy tortures to them to see how well they hold up and they have withstood all reasonable impacts. On top of that, they all have a lifetime warranty if it does ever fail on you. HexMags are comparably priced to other polymer magazines on the market as well. The two most noticeable features of the magazine is the grip texture (from which they get their name) and the HexID system. The raised hexagonal pattern on the mags is large enough to allow fingers to grab and push/pull on these magazines with great ease and is a overall cool looking design as well. The HexId system is basically bright colored followers/base pad marker that allow several different features not found on other magazines: 1) the bright colored follower allows easy instant recognition of an empty magazine and 2) the matching base pad marker allows for having different calibers/types of ammunition loaded and easily identifiable (ie...green for green tip, red for tracer, yellow for .330 BLK, etc...). In addition, the magazines can be stripped and cleaned in the field without tools for disassembly. Currently they are made in black, foliage (green), and FDE with colored followers an a rainbow (yes, I said rainbow) of colors (Hex orange is standard) as well as 30 rd, 15rd, and 10rd capacities, each are normal 30rd size.

I had the opportunity to take some with me for a .gov shooting course in Moyock, NC over the last 2 weeks and was very pleased with them. Having shot over 1K rounds per day for a 10 days (and nights) straight, there were no magazine induced malfunctions the entire time. The malfunctions encountered were from just running the crap out of the guns and them being dirty and abused. We shot in 30-40 deg temperatures, with few clear days but mostly rain and just miserable conditions (good thing I wasn't paying for ammo!). Grip purchase on the magazines (wearing Oakley gloves, first 2 fingers removed) was phenomenal in all conditions, without any modification to the magazines. HexMag currently has pre cut grip tape in various colors as well to assist anyone with butterfingers. We were shooting on crushed rock and gravel surface outdoors and dropping each magazine repeatedly as required by the course. We (everyone in the course took turns) ran the magazines hard and put them through a rough workout with no hiccups. The bright followers were well appreciated by all, students and instructors, as it made observing an empty magazine much easier compared to others with dark followers. Some of them are staying here at the compound for further abuse.

The point to this review is to show that there are some local (yes, he's here in Loveland, CO!!!) entrepreneurs who have the initiative to make improvements on gear to make us more efficient shooters. On top of that, Aaron is a great person who is truly interested in making everything he touches better. I say efficient as the magazines had nothing to do with my accuracy, but did make reloads faster and even one-tenth of a second is a bonus in my field. The HexID system is better than tape or paint and will prevent inadvertent mix ups with ammo types or calibers. If you see some HexMags on the shelf, get some and run 'em hard.

Their 10 and 15 round mags are available for sale in CO, without restriction. Standard capacity mags are available in free states, or to LE/Mil in CO.

AS with any magazine.
That a New Gun Orientated company has a product made in CO no less, during these topsy turvy political & economical times, hats off to them. While i'm set on mags i'll go buy a few just to support another gun acc vendor. It's nice they made them in standard 30 round mag body size, just blocked. Probably send 1/2 doz to the kid in CA.

PHNX (VDC Armory) is supplying them with their AR builds. They are 30rnd length, (you can get shorter ones, also), with internal components limiting them to 15 rnds. PHNX has been using them for a bit and have had no issues. I've seen some and they seem very well built. You can get different baseplate locktab colors to use for different loads. If you get some "repair kits", you can of course mix and match capacities, but they are dated, as I recall.

I had been eyeing and watching these when they first debuted beginning of the year. Found it odd the actual reviews online were limited except for the TFB mini review. I had no clue they were from CO. They have a great price!

Thanks for the review and now I know someone local has abused them personally. [Beer]

APEX has been carrying the HEXMAG's since the first time the owners dropped by to see us.
That was before they went into full scale production!
We really liked the company & the product.

One year we took a whole bunch of new 30round HEXMAG's with us to Knob Creek and made sure the shooters on the line had plenty of chances to use them in their M16 machine guns.
Everyone came to our booth for more!
J-Mac Customs first saw the HEXMAG at Knob Creek and obtained some from us for a review:

APEX now stocks the 10 Round and 15 Round versions of these magazines.
They come with stainless steel springs, no-tilt followers and a factory lifetime warranty.

2 full capacity.

I also had a strange craving for milk when I was watching it for some reason.

I saw some (hex mags) in person today. Fifteen rounders that looked like normal 30 rounders. I wasn't overly impressed but did like the way you could change out the followers and floor plate retainers to different colors.

Got to handle one of these at Ark the other day when I was ordering more stuff. Seems lighter than other polymer mags, but the plastic itself doesn't have the cheaper feel like some do. Rigid body and no noises from the follower or spring make me want to try one or two out.

I got to handle one at Ark the other day as well. Seemed OK at first. Then, for whatever reason, I gave a little squeeze to the feed lips. Man, did they flex. And with very little effort on my part. In fact, if I got a little mean with it they would flex enough to pinch down on the follower.

While it's awesome to see new products hit the market and even better that they are made locally, I'll probably just stick to the tried and true stuff.

The 30 round Magpul and the 15/30 round HexMag both weighed 4.6 ounces on my electronic scale.

Hmmm, time to ask around about Hexmags. The flexing thing disturbs me. If you're going to do the plastic mag thing, it has to be MUCH better, not just as good. Magpul has been at it for a while. I use them almost exclusively, with no issues. (All colors). Don't come in as the "Johnny-come-lately" and lo-ball the tech that has been established already by the original. They paid their dues, and then some, you have to do the same.
We'll see.

Ark Tactical Has them in stock as well as baseplate and followers. I have a few but haven't been able to use them. Love the fact that you can change the parts out and make it different colored base plates and followers. I'm hoping to shoot with them soon to see if I'd recommend them or not.

Looks interesting, I will grab a 15 and give it a try. If I don't like it, I can double my money on Armslist.

APEX usually has some of the factory 15 round Hexmags on the table at local shows.

AND...

It is time to start calling our State representatives and find out the plan to overturn the 15 round magazine limitation!

I got to meet Aaron (owner) yesterday. Turns out our shops are only about 150 yrds from each other. Some of his mail got put in my mailbox. Dropped it off to him, and shot the shit for a few minutes. Really nice guy.

That is all. Tried to find some in the free states over the holidays but was unsuccessful.

FWIW – (I know I’m dredging up an old thread - I hope its okay)

Here are a few pics of the HX15 with a Gen2 and Gen3 Pmag.

From Left to Right: OD Hexmag, Gen 2 Foliage Green Pmag, Hexmag, Gen3 Pmag.

They disassemble just like Pmags. Push in the center hex and slide the baseplate forward.
http://i.imgur.com/HmHT6aj.jpg

They use a shorter spring and an extension to allow only 15 rounds. The spring is too short to feed rounds without the extension.

Bought a few of these on line a while back....I like the colored followers and base plate hex. Makes it easy to see on the shelf what caliber you are grabbing. I got nothing bad to say about these....200 rounds of 300AAC through a few of these, and 1k of .223rem through a few more....n always loaded and bolts always locked back when empty.
