Below is current as of Dec 2022.

Starting January 2015 Pueblo West Sportsmans Assn and Pikes Peak Practical Shooters will host the Precision 600 Yard Field Rifle Match. 9:30 start time. $15 per entry. 3rd Sunday, year round.

You will be able to verify your zero from 8:00-9:15

Pueblo West Sportsmans Assn
600 East Loma Drive
Pueblo West CO 81007

20 shooters max. If you do not sign up ahead of time you do not get to shoot. To get signed up, go to practiscore and look for Hosers Steel under the clubs tab or click on the link below. You don't pay when you sign up, you pay at the match.

https://practiscore.com/clubs/hosers-steel

If you sign up and don't show up, you took a slot from someone and they didn't get to shoot. That isn't cool. Make a habit of doing that and you might find it hard to sign up.

All centerfire calibers from 223 - 300 Win Mag are legal. 3200 fps speed limit. No bullet weight restrictions.

No tracer or steel core ammo allowed. If a magnet sticks to it, leave it at home. You will not like the $500 fine for using the above and I wont like my targets getting torn up.

Eye protection is required at all times while on the range.

The new 600 yard format will change things up a little bit. At 615, 300, 410, 500, 615, 615 and 390 yards there will be a bank of targets. A large target and a small target. When shooting prone you will shoot the small target. If you are not shooting prone, you will shoot the large target. Simple as that.

The 600 yard Certification is required for everyone. It is a one time deal and can be accomplished the day of the match. Contact me for details.

For now, we will still have the same positions (prone, ruck, sticks, and ??? of the day)

Three divisions. Semi-Auto, Bolt/Manual Action and He-Man. He-Man is 308 or larger.

Total round count is 56. 14 shots per position/stage. 90 seconds max.

Start position for all strings will be bolt closed for most strings, however the start position could vary. When the buzzer goes off shooter will engage all seven targets in no more than 90 seconds. Hit or miss the shooter will advance to the next target. Like the prairie dog matches of days gone by, only hits count. There is no penalty for misses.

Shooting sticks may have one, two or three points of contact and saddles may be used. You may not be any lower than sitting.

While shooting off a pack, no part of the rifle may touch the ground.

While shooting prone, a bi-pod or tri-pod may be used.

The "Position of the month" details will be given at the range on match day and will vary from month to month.

If you can not comply with a shooting positions criteria, you can shoot it however you want but hits will only be worth half (5 vs 10 points) value.

There is no minimum age limit. It is up to you as the parent to decide what is too young.

Slings will not be required, but could be very helpful.

Dave H are I are the match directors. Hit us up with any questions you might have.

This will be a great match to shoot other then on your belly. There are plenty of those around. I am really looking forward to being able to shoot different positions on the clock. PWSA has gone through a lot of trouble to keep the range one of the best shooting facilities you have the privilege to squeeze a trigger at a target. Hoser is just keeping us shooting. Thanks dude!!!!

The match was a ton of fun and a huge success in the attendance department. Everyone that I talked with seemed to really be having a good time, and while challenging, not impossible either.

Great job as usual Hoser!!!

Yep, awesome time with a good group of men and women. But I must say, when your buddy out shoots you with your own rifle, it kinda blows!!

A big THANKS to Hoser for keeping the dream alive.

One of the cool things about yesterday was two of my friends that are somewhat new to this type of shooting, showing up and kicking butt.

Jon shot my Accuracy International AW in 308 and kicked butt. He had never shot off sticks before much less with a borrowed gun at a 3x5 inch target at 300 yards. He just grabbed my old school sticks and started hammering away.

Sarah MFB came down from the Olympic Training Center and shot my LaRue OBR in 6 Grendel that forum member AKA-Spook built for me. She would finish the day with the second highest score despite a pink Magpul MOE grip.

Another cool thing was seeing all my friends that I had not seen in a few months since we hung up the Prairie Dog matches.

See you next month.

Coolest niece ever.

String four was from inside the 4 wheeler trailer. Only one bag allowed inside with you.

A few different ways to do it. Below is my niece hitting 9 out of 10 with a 223 bolt gun.

Fun Match and great weather. Thanks Hoser and Dino and everyone who helped set up/run match. Always learn something watching and talking with lots of good shooters. Always seems to cost me money as well as I usually see some piece of gear that "I have to have". Came home with a very nice bag (thanks Stew)

Those "have to haves" have cost me thousands over the years. Just do it an don't think about it and justify it as a necessity for shooting.

This past Saturday we had a bunch of people come out for the match.

One very notable thing happened... A new shooter using borrowed gear showed up and cleaned everyones clock. His main experience was shooting smallbore (aka 22) 3P matches showing all you need is fundamentals and you can do well. Also showing that you shouldn't overlook the training value of shooting 22s.

Huge thanks to Team Burris for bring out the new Burris Spotting scope so all of us could get a sneak peek at the good stuff coming out of Burris.

Thanks to everyone for making this match happen. Without people helping, this match and others like it need help to continue on.

Last month someone borrowed a shooting mat and forgot to return it to the owner. If you are that person, please contact me and I will get you in touch with the owner. Also someone left behind a magazine last month. Contact me to claim it.

Next Sunday, 23 April is the Tactical Rifle Match and the Sunday after that, 30 April is the Rimfire Precision Rifle Match. See you there.

The old Pikes Peak prop that Eddie Rhodes made for us many years ago got dragged out. Turned out to be difficult until you figured out to grab ahold of the prop and your bipod.

It turned out to be an excellent day to shoot. Perfect temps, light breeze and good friends.

Huge thanks to the people that stepped up to run things when it looked like I would be in Florida flying hurricane support missions. I really appreciate it.

The position of the day was the short tank trap. Like really short. If you put too much pressure it rocked, not enough and your crosshairs danced around. The thought of this prop, for me anyway, your out Elk hunting and you see a big bull at 450 yards and you can't go prone because of the weeds but there is an old stump to use as a rest. There was several different ways to skin this cat. Even an 81 year old was willing to come play with us and Stu brought out his 16 inch 260.

The small target for the day was a 3x5 plate. Everyone hit it at least once. The other difficult target was a 6x6x6 triangle. If you hold center you don't have much room for wind errors, hold low you might miss under, ect. I missed that damn thing twice, once off sticks and once off the tank trap.

Traust shooting bags were used by a huge majority of the shooters.

Results went out last night. Let me know if you didn't get them.

Bi-pod, sticks, rear bag, backpack, spare mags.

A sling can be useful but isn't used that often.

Fun times yesterday with absolutely perfect weather.

Reminder, if you sign up for the match and can't make it, please inform match staff asap. When you don't show up, it means someone that was on the wait list wasn't able to shoot the match.

Yesterday morning the position of the day was a ladder. You could use whatever support equipment you wanted to shoot 5 targets from different steps, in 90 seconds. Tim opted to shoot it straight up with just a bag and a rifle. Kevin showed us all how it is done using a tripod as rear support.

The afternoon match we used a wire spool and a barrel. 5 shots in 75 seconds. It turned out to be very difficult and not steady at all with only one person hitting all 10 targets and a few 9/10s. The tight time limit made using a tripod for a rear support a wash. More stable but a lot of time for setting up.

Huge thanks to Bison Tactical in Boulder for letting us use one of his new Tactical Udder front bags. Pretty much all you saw was Traust rear bags and the Tactical Udder.

More important than anything else, we raised a bunch of $$$ for Deputy Micha Flicks widow and children. Following next Sundays Rimfire match, I will drop off the $$$ to her. Feel free to donate cash, gift cards, restaurant gift certs, ect.

Huge thanks to Dino from Team Burris. He got there early and stayed late to be sure everything was taken care of. Without him these matches would not happen. Please tell him thank you the next time you see him.

Fun times yesterday. While it started out cold, it warmed up to t-shirt weather by noon.

Lots of high scores with light winds to deal with.

The morning position of the day was inside the trailer with one bag for the first string, and anything you wanted for the second string. The catch was you had to zero your turret to turn it into a holdover exercise as well. That is assuming you had a 100 yard zero. If you use a 300 yard zero, you just got to shoot. Or, you simply forgot to hold over even though the stage concept was your idea...

The Bison Tactical Udder bag was a huge help and most everyone opted to use it. And, Scotty reminded us that right now they are on sale. https://www.bisontactical.com/collections/slings-swivels/products/tactical-udder-field-bag

Results are avail here. Lots of 6 Dasher shooters at the top of the heap.

Fun match yesterday. Everything ran smooth and the weather wasn't too bad. Winds in the morning match made things interesting. 1 completely new shooter and 1 new shooter to the match did well.
Great shooting Eric (morning match).

Glad everyone liked the position of the day. It was simple and no setup needed. Your welcome!!

The reason things ran smooth is because of how Charlene had the match setup. With only 4 squads the same people RO'ed, scored and spotted for 2 squads. That really makes the match flow when we don't have to beg to get it done. Thanks to some good friends stepping up to spot and score when I was RO'ing (Tim and Stew). Thanks it is so much fun to shoot a match and have those 2 things taken care of.

Thanks to the entertainment committee (Zach Olson & Steve Cohen) for keeping things lively.

Lastly, thank you Charlene. She just does everything that is needed to run the match. Putting in time setting up practiscore, the electronic scoring, and setup you name it she does it.

Hoser stay safe see you soon!!

Changes for taking the match up to the 600 yard range.

#1. If you have not shot on the PWSA 600 yard range *and* received a 600 yard certification card, you cant not shoot this match until you get your card. It is a simple process that can be accomplished on match day. We have 5 slots set aside before the 8:30 match and 10 slots for the 12:00 match to accomplish this.

#2. We will have 5 target banks from 300-620 yards. When shooting prone you will engage the small target at that distance. When shooting in any position other than prone, you will engage the larger target. Simple as that.

#3. Because target distances are further and there will be knob twisting involved, time limits will change. For now, plan on 60 and 90 seconds per string.

#4. When shooting the non-prone portions, which was 30 of the 40 shots, we will change it up also. In the end, you will shoot 15 of the 40 shots from a non-prone position.

#2, 3 and 4 are subject to change as the match evolves.

#1 is non-negotiable. If you need the cert (a one time deal) you *must* arrive at the range 45 minutes prior to the published match start time. You have to contact match staff ahead of time to be sure we have slots to get you completed.

Post #1 in this thread still has all the important info and rules.

Good times yesterday. Thanks a ton to everyone that made this happen. This was the first time in a few years that we have been able to get back up on the 600.

We had an awesome set up crew (Daniel, Tim and Dave) that showed up at 7:00 to get things going. We were set up in record time despite every target location being new.

Everyone stuck around to help tear it all down. Thanks to everyone that made it happen.

Dont forget, the 600 yard certification process is 100% mandatory for all PWSA members and non-members. It is a one time deal. But.... you must complete it before you can play in this match. Contact me directly for more details.

Good times yesterday. Several new shooters came out to play in the wind. Lots of switchy conditions made you stay on your toes for every shot.

Thanks to everyone that came out early to make it happen and those that stayed late to clean it up.

Please note, if you have not yet been certified to shoot on the 600, you need to contact match staff BEFORE signing up. This ensures we have a board member available to get you signed off. The 600 yard certification is mandatory for everyone, members and non-members and is a 1 time deal.

Fun times yesterday despite the winds and heat. The winds were strong and gusty most all day. Congrats to Eric Z for figuring out the wind puzzle.

When we wrapped up around 1:30 it was right around 100-102 and the 15-20 MPH winds made it seem like your head was in an oven.

Changes are coming for this match.

1. Moving to the 3rd Sunday.
2. Noon match going away.
3. 8:30 match starting at 9:30.
4. Round count bumping up to 56 shots.

The match will still be very focused on the fundamentals of an average RPS/NRL match. Hopefully having everything set up by 8:00 just like we do now will allow new shooters some time to get used to how things work and verify their dope to be 100% accurate by match start time. With 16 slots avail I expect to wrap up around 1:30-2:00.

The shooting will still be tough with 1.5-3.5 MOA sized targets.

If there are open slots left on the day before, people can opt to shoot a second gun. But please contact me before you sign up a second gun. If you sign up for 2 guns right off the bat, I will contact you to find out which one you want to shoot.

And the August match is in the books. https://practiscore.com/results/html/609dfac2-8d96-4b07-b1f8-4b1eb2098147?page=overall-combined

The new format worked well. It took a string or two but we think we have settled on 75 seconds (prone) and 100 seconds (positional) for each string of 7 shots.

Having the targets avail for new shooters to get used to PRS/NRL type shooting for 90 minutes is a huge plus. That makes this a relatively new shooter friendly PRS match. The targets are still small, but thats the challenge.

And people got to learn some things on how to speed up and be more efficient while engaging targets at different distances. So that was a win.

Good times yesterday with great weather as a bonus. There was a ton of people there bright and early to help get things set up. Thanks a bunch for your help. This match cant survive without people helping out.

Pay close attention to the results. Mary Beth got her new batch of 6.5 Creed ammo from Prime and she kicked some serious butt with it. And she shot both the positions of the day straight up, one bag and her gun.

Dino, you will be missed around here. You were one of the first guys to take pity on this dumb FNG all those years ago and offer some help. You’ve been instrumental in bringing a large number of new shooters for over to the dark side of precision shooting by your dedication and hard work at this match.

Fun times today. It was a bit chilly and wet, but we managed to get it done.

Huge thanks to Tim K for his idea on how to change up the position of the day. This change easily cuts an hour off the match and gets rid of some of the down time between stages. Round count still holds at 56.

Next Sundays Tactical Rifle match is still set to go. However, the morning match is completely full with 9 people on the wait list. There is still some room in the noon match.

Lastly, dont forget Wednesday afternoon steel challenge starts up in April.

One of the shooting positions is shooting off a bench. However, you do not get to use a bipod, a chair or anything like that. Just you, your rifle and a single bag. Large or small bag, no matter. It is actually kind of awkward. And when shooting at targets out to 600 yards that might be 10-12 inch diameter steel targets it isnt easy.

Most people shot small frame ARs like 223 guns although a few guys brought their 6.5 Creedmore and 308s out to play. In the end, the 6 ARC and 6 Grendel came out on top. And lot of people used a can which makes everyone happy.

With the semi auto match being a huge hit, one shooter had an idea for another once a year match.

Suppressor only and subsonic only match. Still playing with details, but guessing it will only go out to 300 yards.

5 targets, big to small. Guessing a full size IPSC down to a 6-8 inch diamond. Maybe a bonus target off to the side for anyone that shoots a string clean.

Right now I am looking at December of January sometime.

Let me know your thoughts and or ideas.

Hoser
07-30-2023, 19:05
I have had several shooters over the years ask for a Suppressor Only match, kind of like the Quiet Riot in Utah.

It took some head scratching on how to do this and make it different enough to be a thing.

After our hugely successful semi auto only match in June, we came up with a plan.

Suppressor and Subsonic ammo match.

You have to use a can and shoot subs.

Nothing but steel targets at 300 yards. Various shapes and sizes. 5 stages and 50 rounds total.

Being subs only, the targets will be pretty large by normal bolt gun standards.

I will have loaner gear avail. Pretty much Thunderbeast suppressors and Accuracy International rifles. But you have to pay for my reloading components.

We will be doing this in January to give you some time to work up an accurate and quiet load.
