If anyone didnt know they increased the residential speeds on the 16th, you will more then likely have to power cycle the modem to see the speeds. The 25 went to 50, the 50 to 105 and the 105 to 150. I didnt see this posted but i have been busy and may have missed it, if so i apologize.
Funny, our internet has been stupid slow lately. Haven't power cycled since yesterday though.
Hmmm no change here.
I've been @50/60 for quite a while now.

Mine went from about 30 down to 60 down. Uplink speed didn't change.
Thanks for the heads up, I had heard it was going to happen but didn't have a date. I did have to reset the modem for it to take effect, went from 56 Mbps to 102 Mbps. [Beer]
Glad to see they're at least using lube now.
Mine went from 60mb to 120mb. Reboot your modem
I was getting 108 down last night at home, but uploads are still loafing along at 7ish. Happy for the better down speeds though!
If you had 25mb service, it went to 50. If you had 50, it went to 105. If you had 105, it went to 150.
Upload didnt change, and the upgrade excludes Fort Collins for the moment.
If you're not sure if you originally had 25 or 50, look for "blast" on your bill. Blast was the 50, now 105.
Normally with these speed increases you would need to reboot your modem but this time around they changed it at the headend so you shouldn't need to reboot to see the speed increase. That being said, if you don't see the speed increases a reboot won't hurt anything. Several areas got shafted though so it's also possible you're just SOL. Last time they upped the speeds we got left in the cold so I'm happy to report that this time around we got the speed increase. One more note, you need a DOCSIS 3.0 modem to see speeds above 38Mbps so if you are on an older modem this would be a good time to upgrade from DOCSIS 2.0 to take advantage of the speeds for which you are already paying. Thanks to this promo I found out my buddy has a modem that was discontinued in 2009 and was constantly wasting time on the phone w/idiot Comcast reps who never could tell him why his speeds were so slow. In addition, it was a modem/wireless router combo which are complete trash. If you have a setup like this do yourself a favor and get a quality modem (Retail will be $70 at Best Buy with deals often putting them under $50) and a quality wireless modem as two separate components. The majority of the internet problems I've seen in residential areas are these combined devices that blow goats.

From what I've seen, the reboot is necessary. The way we see the bootfiles did not change, so it must have been a frequency change, the modems would need reboot to adjust.

Went from 50 download to 77. No modem reboot necessary.

Mine didn't. I specifically tested prior to rebooting to find out if it was required. I've been using Comcrap (and previously AT&T) for cable internet since the mid 90's and every speed increase required a reboot before this one. Two days ago I ran a speed test and got nearly 100Mbps down w/o doing a reboot when prior to I would see ~50Mbps. I rebooted after that as I had a window when I could take my network offline and it hadn't been done in a while anyway and after that I had to reboot several times to get it to even work properly. I'm not sure why it allowed the speed increase w/o a reboot but I'm even more puzzled as to why it took several reboots to work properly after the fact. Like I said, check your speed first and if you don't have it and don't live in Fort Collins reboot and test again.

Hrm, will have to install my new modem and try it out. Granted, I'll be getting rid of 'em soon so I doubt it really matters, but still, 'd be nice.
Edit: Oh, Fort Collins not in the upgrade? Well screw 'em then :P
Comcast employees are douche bags.
Yep!
hahahaha
I tested right before and after so the reboot was definitely required for me.
Does anyone know if you can purchase your own VoIP enabled modem now? Last time I looked Comcast wouldn't allow you to purchase your own modem if you were also using VoIP.
Thanks
Ask 00Tec, he works there, and was the douche bag I was referring to. lmao

ETA: dont get a used one. It may take a while to get it added and everything provisioned, so call when you have enough tike to spare. I would do it, but I dont have access to add an emta to inventory. The care agent will have to escalate it to get it added.

Unless you have a VoIP router with the battery backup, in that case there is a small recessed reset button on the back, just push it with a pin. If you're not getting your home phone from Comcast you most likely just have a regular modem.
Killer timing: For those with an older DOCSIS 2.0 modem Newegg.com just put a rebate on their ZyXEL Comcast modem which is DOCSIS 3.0 and is only $20 after a $30 mail in rebate (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?sdtid=7525806&SID=6711a2fd2e994657b50a5b7d7339806b&AID=10440897&PID=1225267&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-_-cables-_-na-_-na&Item=N82E16825188005&cm_sp=). It should be noted that Motorola is the gold standard for residential cable modems but for $20 this is a REALLY good modem and if I had to buy a modem today I wouldn't hesitate to buy this one. I mean, for $20 you can't go wrong compared to paying Comcast $8/mo for their modem which is on par with this one.

For $20 , it might might even be worth having as a spare. And the modem lease fee is now $10/mo (went up in Sep or Oct).

True dat. I gots all kinds of spare network stuffs and $20 for a spare DOCSIS 3.0 modem is a good idea indeed.

Not free, they've been sneaking rates up all year.
What modem are you chaps using? You might have an older modem only capable of those speeds which means your leaving speed on the table that you're paying for. Hence the DOCSIS 2.0 v DOCSIS 3.0 talk. It applies to you.
Had to do a RESET. Power cycle wasn't cutting it.

You should check your speed with something hardwired to rule out any WiFi or QoS issues affecting your results.

Read the posts to the thread about different types of modems because you may also be running an older modem which may not be capable of the faster speeds.

For those that haven't yet rebooted, try to run a speed test first and then reboot before running a 2nd one. Curious who all was able to get the speed increase without a reboot. Maybe some had rebooted recently enough to get whatever the newest firmware was needed to get these speeds once they flipped the proverbial switch. Dunno.
I did a reboot a couple of weeks ago and noticed that my SB 6120 took new firmware at that time. I rebooted this morning and didn't see another download. I did not perform a speed test before this morning's reboot because I knew what I was getting before any speed bump.

I wouldn't use a WiFi modem as they're mostly tras . That modem I posted is a good start & a quality router (for WiFi) will run you over $100. I've got a few & on some I run custom firmware (DD-WRT, Tomato, etc.) but for the average user that's overkill. A solid residential router would be an Asus N66U which can be had for about $125ish pretty much anytime & sales/refurbs dip under $100. Update the firmware before setup & you've got a solid performing router right out of the box.
I meant WiFi router. I did unplug my modem to reboot. Guess I could do it again.
If you're current modem supports DOCSIS 3.0 then you should be good to go & it saves you $20-$80 for a new one. That router model I posted is a good router.
This is what I have:
Modem: Arris Model: TM702G/CT
Router: D-Link DIR-615
Mine went from 7.2mbps, unplugged and waited a minute, plugged back in and 7.2mbps...
Running Motorola DOCSIS 3.0 Surfboard

I've been at the 50 tier for forever. Might try a hard reset on the modem and see if that helps. The modem is a 3yo DOCSIS 3, and I decided to buy the $20 on from new egg, so maybe I'll see an increase after that switches. It'll certainly save me the $10 a month plus tax (been lazy and leasing the modem from comcast and gonna put an end to that).
My speedtest was on my wired network with all gig switches, though this particular machine uses a USB 2.0 gigabit adapter. I'll have to try rerunning it from another box with a PCIE network card before and after full modem reset.

I would not get that one its already behind the curve with only 4 downstream channels. The ciscos that comcast is issuing now are 16x4 and will do 650. The upstreams didnt change this time but they did just add a fourth upstream channel in most areas. The older motorolas were good but if you buy a new one buy the service plan. Fort collins will be coming along soon.
BRG-35503 The BRG-35503 cable modem allows high-speed data transmission through coaxial cable, with four DS channels bonding the downstream speeds of up to 220Mbps from network to the user under bridge mode, and 10/100/1000Mbps ethernet port from the user to network.

Oddly enough, I changed my wireless NIC drivers and started seeing 40 Mbps down yet the latent every other ping to my gateway still exists. inSSIDer shows I'm doing pretty well on the channel side of things. I think its time for a new NIC and router.... I can connect, get 1 ms response times for a good 15 seconds then it goes to shit.

Behind the curve? Most of the people in this thread are using modems from like a decade ago & prior to this thread never knew a difference. In another decade when Comcrap rolls out another 50Mbps increase they can buy another $20 modem to take advantage of those speeds. Suggesting a $100+ modem for most of the people in this thread is a waste of money.

Does it use ball bearings? I heard everything is using ball bearings these days. [LOL]
I just ordered a SB6141 to replace the rental. Whether it will be faster or not, I guess I will wait to see.

So its better to buy outdated modems and routers now? Buying a modem that bonds less then 16 channels is like buying a 802.11n router, its not going to perform like you want it to. Comcast has upped their speeds 13 times in 12 years or something like that, remember the docsis 1 and 1 meg downloads? 1x1 channels those were the good ol days haha but 32 down wont be far off now that technology isnt a limitation anymore. And for the record a docsis 2 will run over a hundred megs, i seen the first 100 plus meg test in a customers home around 6 years ago with a motorola surfboard 5101, it was running 115-120 during a test period. Of course i live in ault and just ran mine, I get 12 down and 1 up on dsl and 14 down and 9 up on my verizon hot spot. I have a 1 gig network in my house and a 12mb connection, life is good haha
Jer nailed it. Most people don't care or need the speeds you guy are talking about. Mostly just dick measuring. Most people don't even need 20 meg. You guys are gonna love these speeds when Comcast starts charging by the Gig. With my "doubling" I'm up to 28 Mbs. Anyone considering the $20 modem, do it. You wont be missing the extra downstream carriers anyway.

Pricing per GB could make all of this very interesting. I didn't realize how much data Netflix used, last time I looked we were using well under 100GB a month and for the last 3 months (using Netflix at times) we're between 400 - 500GB. I just dropped the Netflix setting down to Medium quality to see what that does.

He was calling about my computer. I asked him "What computer?" To which he replied "your computer that is using Microsoft Windows". I then told him that I don't have a computer or a tv. It only took about 5 seconds for me to hear the click of him hanging up on me.

Just hook it up like your old modem and call in to have them provision and activate it to get the correct speed tier or go to the online activation page and see if that will do it. If you have one of the wifi / modem combo modems from Comcast then once you have it provisioned you can set up the wireless by typing 10.0.0.1 into your web browser. Once the page loads the user name is "admin" in lower case and the password is "password" in lower case. Then click the connections tab followed by the wifi tab then click the edit tab to set up your wireless.

They are looking at visual representations and / or signal level readings that indicate something out of spec. Green good red bad. Your issue is a series of technicians that have not found your problem (admittedly many intermittent issues are a pain in the ass to find) Here is an example of one of the parameters they can look at all the traces in the green are in spec and you can individually identify a modem that is reporting out of spec levels. The problem is they are not finding the root source causing your issue.
These are traces from 71 individual modems and it is fairly easy to tell which modems have issues either bad equipment of bad signal paths to and from the device. Not as easy to find actual cause.

Individual techs have access to those traces, it is just a pain in the ass to get behind the vpn, log into the software and re-verify credentials then transfer the subs info into the software to pull up the account then pick the test to run then suffer through the wait due to sprint or verizon cellular connectivity issues. It is just easier to look at the basic red bad green good stuff that is more easily accessed in the tool set. Answered secondary question earlier in thread. I can not go randomly looking at specific accounts without risking privacy protections and a slap on the wrist at work so I am only posting in general terms here. Undoubtedly any of us here could look at his specific account at work and discuss it with him but I must leave work at work.

Exactly, trying to get enough signal to open scout or path track or anything in the field can be hit or miss. Tech link was a nice tool to give some basics easily but since they are canning that. Opening scout is like trying to load static IP's on IPv6, which works on the intranet but trying to get it to work in the field requires 3 witch doctors a Mormon a monk and a priest!

Ping and upload are good, are you hooked directly to the modem or wifi?
Wired, but through the wifi router.
I think this all has to do with something else. When I bought this PC, I was told that it did not have an onboard ethernet connection. I've always just used a USB wireless plug-in with a little antenna. My wife recently broke it off. I put it back together, but it doesn't work any more (I've broken it and put it back together before). So I just ran an ethernet cable directly from the wifi router into the PC and have internet now, but it is painfully slow. Just a few minutes ago I ran the cord directly from the new modem into the PC just to test it out, but it won't connect to the internet that way.

Your USB thing sounds like a USB WiFi adapter. I would be surprised that you have a PC w/o an ethernet port/adapter unless it's about a decade old. Even then PCs had them pretty much by default even going back past that. If you have a port that a network cable physically fits into then you have integrated network in your PC. Use a network cable and scrap that wireless USB garbage. To connect your PC directly to the modem you'll need to establish a new network but I wouldn't waste your time. Connect your network cable to your new router and then set up a new network (Google is your friend here if you don't know how) so your PC can connect to your router and your connection should be just fine.
I've already done most of your post Jer. I'll have to correctly set up a new network it sounds like.
