so I'm all tied up on what to rebarrel it to. the 300wm is shot up. I'm in process on 2 338s on remy actions...but thinking something along the lines of 6.5wsm. i want to hear what u guys think for a mag bolt face. mainly a paper puncher or poodle slayer.

My dream would be a 264 Win Mag. You can even use your old 300 brass to make 264 brass. The 264 will out perform the 6.5WSM for the same barrel length.

There has been a history of not getting the accuracy from the overbored 6.5's like the 264 Win Mag and 6.5WSM. I would personally consider the 6.5-06 as a re-barrel as well as getting better barrel life.
That is a pretty big cartridge for a poodle or paper slayer. If that is the extent of the guns and want high volume use you might consider something that even kinder on barrels like the 260 Remington.

Curious to hear other peoples opinions.

Swapping the bolt head for a .470 would give you lots of options, from .35 Whelen to .308, or .260 Rem, the last two I'm told are cracking nifty for longer ranges.

A comparison of the 264WM to the other 6.5's...
+26gr over a 260, which already holds plenty of capacity for the heaviest in 26cal bullets.
+17gr over a 6.5x55, the edge of practical.
+14gr over a 6.5-284, which is a barrel burner.


I was looking at northland, and he does have the following in stock...I still don't have a 260 caliber gun...damn it, i'll be up all night looking at different cartridges...but good call on swapping bolt heads...didn't think about that....

Very easy and while your in there you might want to swap to a BT or large tac bolt handle and heavier recoil lug as well during the barrel change. The upgrades have been common practice for me on my Savage builds.

Build a 7mm SUAM, loved mine and wish I would have kept it. If you build on a LA your seating depth with a long VLD would still be good to go!

or a 7 WSM, either way, I wish my 7/300 WSM was built on a long action so I could really take advantage of the case capacity and still be able to mag feed it.

Nice thing about the 7/300 WSM is it uses the shorter shouldered 270/300/325 WSM brass so you have a few more brass options (fed, Win, and Norma) than just the 7WSM Winchester Brass. 7 SAUM kinda runs into that same issue only you still have the option of Norma Brass in addition to Remington.

BTW: if you decide to go 7/300 WSM, I have a reamer and go/nogo gauges you could borrow.

Straight up 284 in a long action is also a damn fine round if throated to take full advantage of the long action. When done so you can run the 168 - 180 gr class bullets seated so the case capacity is maximized (boat tail starts at the bottom of the neck) it's a winner for sure.

Only issue is getting brass, which if you take 6.5-284 and just neck it up works pretty well (Lapua makes it and it's not hard to find), just keep an eye on it for donuts. Getting your hands on Winchester 284 win brass is nearly impossible if you don't happen to know someone who's shot 284 for a long time and has some old Win brass they've saved.

I'm running a 6.5x284 Norma and it plain moves. I'm running the 140 VLD's at 2947fps, recoil is on par with a .308, 6.5 ballistics is much better especially with the .284 case behind it. But, its not a magnum bolt face.
