View Full Version : I need a mechanic on the North side of Denver. :(
I've got more broken vehicles than I have the time or knowledge to fix, and I need something fixed soon so my wife can get to work. Do we have a mechanic somewhat near me who I can take one of my beater cars to? I sent my wife off today in a car where the heat wasn't blowing. It almost over heated just me driving in a 3 mile loop. I have no idea how she made it to work and back. Not to mention I can't even feel my fingers.
I've got a 2006 Ford Focus with the power steering out.
The other car is a 1999 Chevy Cavalier that I just changed the clutch in. I don't know if the thermostat went out, or I didn't hook something back up correctly, but it's just too cold for me to be outside messing with it.
While I'm waiting on recommendations for mechanics that will get me on the road, I'm going to look up the power steering system for the Ford. I figure after doing a FWD transmission solo, I ought to be able to handle power steering.

PM incoming.
We're down to a single vehicle, so it's got to be asap, fixed 100% and no messing around. My wife has already given me plenty of leash on this and I've not got her a decent running car.

Is your garage heated, or some kind of heat available?
Yeah, it's heated enough. It's usually about 58 degrees or higher.
If you love your wife you'll buy her a decent, reliable vehicle. [Coffee]

You know.....that would work too. Ray's alright.
That's the Focus!
The eight year old car with the bad power steering pump? That's the best you can do for her?
wish i was closer with the time.

Owner's name is Dave. Always done well for us.
I nearly forgot, I don't have any cash, so any mechanic is going to have to take my credit card.
I think tomorrow I'll change the thermostat in the Cavalier and see if that makes it behave. If so, then I can take my time with the Focus.
Thank you guys much for all the help so far.
I'm assuming you have air flow but no heat.

it's likely the vacuum line, or the valve on the heater lines not allowing flow to the core. look for this on the passenger side of the engine compartment on the firewall. Some you can manually jam open. Sometimes tapping on the valve with get it un stuck.
If you change your tstat, change the pressure cap too.
Thanks for the tip. Yes, airflow, no heat. A wire was left ungrounded initially, but I wasn't driving the car and forgot about it. This morning, there was no airflow at all, and once I grounded that wire, the airflow kicked on so I thought everything was fine and dandy. I'm going to start the car tomorrow and let it get up to temp and start feeling hoses to see if I have a blockage, or if the t-stat is just bad or something.

Okay, car has heat now. I was able to milk it into submission. Now the radiator hoses are properly warm, the heat is working, and no catastrophic failures so far. I'm going to take it on a test drive across town in a moment. Thanks so much for all the help offered. Thanks to OBC who is always first to shoot me contact info of someone who can help.

Glad to hear man! Love it when a plan comes together. Keep us posted
Drove across town to 5280 Armory and everything seems to be working well enough. Thanks everyone, especially blackford for the phone walk through.
Blackford saves the the day again!

A fitting way to end 2014. This community is full of people who enjoy firearms, are dedicated to the freedoms outlined in our Constitution, and most importantly, members support one another. [Beer]
Glad you have heat in the whip, Irving. Should we start a crowdsource funding campaign to upgrade one of your rides?
No way, I feel bad taking help, let alone handouts.

It's not a hand out if people owe you money. I'll get my $20 out to you friday.
I'm pretty sure no one owes me money. But if envelopes full of cash with no return addresses start showing up at my house, I guess there's nothing I can do about it.

Remind me to never use you as a character reference. Um Yeah he's ok. What's this for BURP again ?
I had a Fed come to my house and interview me in my kitchen as a character reference for another member once. I believe he got the job.

Nothing more righteous than having a working vehicle for emergency runs to the gun shop. [Coffee]

He must have, especially using 5280 .
Update: Got off my bum and took a look at the car (as the Chevy died in the driveway this morning). Must have been Chevy volunteer day at the Ford plant when my car was put together.

The small hard line in the video is the power steering line. The large hard line with the HUGE hole in it is the A/C line. Looks like I found two problems at the same time. The A/C hasn't worked in this car in years. This power steering line was destined to fail, as it was also rubbing against the mount for the oil filter in two different spots that were just about to break through themselves. Here are pictures of the line at each end. Doesn't look too difficult to change, but I'm more concerned about the low side. The hard line in question is the one in the center. Is there anything I need to know about changing this? The A/C hard line looks considerably more difficult to access, but is much lower priority. I'm hoping the pump didn't crap out from the rapid fluid loss.
