View Full Version : What to do with a Raspberry Pi

So my brother sent me a Raspberry Pi B+.
I was originally thinking I'd build a RasPlex (http://www.rasplex.com/)box with it but really don't need one since my Rokus work just fine.
I just want to find a good basic project to make with it that will not require the purchase of too many other items.
One idea I was considering is building a MAME (http://www.raspberrypi.org/tag/mame/)box with it.
Anyone have some suggestions?
I have wondered if one could be used to make a LR scoring system. Point a camera at a target, shooter A fires and gets a score, then shooter B, etc. Live scoring of far targets if you will. I know there are other systems out there, but in my limited computer knowledge, it seems like a worthwhile thing to try.

I have been considering a home theater setup, and was JUST thinking about whether or not a raspberry pi would work... looks like I have some reading to do!

I thought this thread was going to be about PIE.[gohome]
Build a DStar repeater.

Okay, I am intrigued.
Had to look it up first

Thanks for the new path to explore!

I'm finally doing this project. Bought my Pi, in the process is setting it up. I'm going to use it primarily as a retro video game emulator.

I used my PIs and some OTC IR sensors to make command proximity anti-personnel defenses. Surprisingly easy. USB wifi rulez!
We built two retro gaming systems with the kids (one for each) a couple of weeks ago. Honestly, I was disappointed that it was so easy - I was hoping that it would take a bit more work, and there'd be more teachable moments. Literally load the image and go, flawless fun so far.
Re-doing a bunch of stuff in the house over break, so maybe I'll play with one as a wifi-extender or maybe do some arduino projects.
Circuits scares me btw.

Did you put Raspian on the SD card first & configure the Pi? Or just put Retro Pie image right from a freshly formatted SD card?

Oh, please. You recompile the raspbian image from source, first, then write images to SD cards.
jeez!
LOL well I suppose you could. But no, we just dropped the Retro Pie image right on the SD card using an imaging tool.
There were several guides going over it, and honestly after reading a lot of them, I was expecting to spend more time teaching the kids about everything, but honestly it just worked out of the box, even the USB game controllers.
Tweaked it a bit after, but that was about it.
Here, for example:

Sometime this winter, I'm going to build a homebrew keezer/kegerator. Raspberry Pints is the next project on the list.

Maybe I'll wander over to Microcenter this week and see if they have any of those $5 Pi Zeros in stock.

I don't know what you're talking about, but it sounds fun and useful. Can you elaborate?

I'm pondering getting the touch screen that goes with them and making a touch panel to turn on/off all my truck lights
Pretty neat little device actually. Run cameras, ftp's, learn coding, make a retro pi (old school games). I have a ton of stuff that's I'd probably sell if anyone wants to get into it.

I'm interested... I just need some application ideas. I would like to do something useful... like contribute to home security.

So did I. [Shy]
Beyond that, I are cruless.
I'm tempted to get a Raspberry Pi to make a Magic Mirror, https://www.raspberrypi.org/blog/magic-mirror/ . I'm backing the PINE A64 on kickstarter, https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/pine64/pine-a64-first-15-64-bit-single-board-super-comput . For this one I plan to turn it into an Intrusion Detection System (IDS) and throw it on my home network. Unlike the Raspberry Pi's the A64 has gig ethernet and it isn't using a USB bus, so my home network won't overload the poor little board.
Likely as my kids get older we'll do robotic projects with them, and who knows what else.

I saw the Pine A64 too. I thought about ordering one... maybe I will actually do it.
