Anyone here ever do any hunting for Snowshoes? Wondering if you could share any tips.
I was hiking around Caribou/Nederland a few years back probably around the March timeframe and the Showshoe's were thick, but I've never had any luck finding any again and I've never hunted them. I took the kids up there to do some sledding.
I'd like a couple starting points from someone in the know and think it wold be a blast to dust off the shotguns/.22's and give it a whirl.
Not sure if the Caribou area is open for shooting/hunting. If you had a clue, I'd appreciate it if you could let me know.

IMO not as common as they were 30 yrs ago. We used to hunt them a couple times a year in Northwest Colorado (northwest of Craig) and the Kremmling and North Park areas.

They are mostly nocturnal and hard to find during the day. We usually hunted over Christmas break and as early or late as possible on days with the best moonlight to try and extend legal hunting hours as much as possible.

No luck huh? I've had real good success hunting them in the daytime. They make delicious stew.

I have a 22 cal pellet gun and want to go chase them. Shot one with my bow a couple years ago because I wasn't finding and deer so I put away the rifle and started rabbit hunting hoping I might fool the deer. It didn't work but I got a delicious rabbit and should have had a couple more! That was also up by Craig... Just too far to drive for rabbits... I'm sure they are much closer just not sure where either! Good luck! Had great time hunting rabbits in Michigan with beagles and are bows! When my son is old enough we will definitely be rabbit hunting

I've seen them up at Climax and in between Copper Mountain and Leadville, and between Leadville and Minturn on the highways. I think they like the high country....and agree with liking the dark since the majority of my sightings have been dusk/dawn or at night. We spooked a couple elk hunting by camp Hale, they were hiding/bedded in the brush and kind of just sat there staring at us and breathing heavy.....would have been an easy kill if I were hungry LOL.

If you're looking for somewhere a bit closer to town check out Jefferson. I can usually get there from town in about an hour and fifteen minutes and have killed them up there in the daytime.

I'll look into Jefferson, thanks for the tip. I may run back up past Nederland/caribou and do a little scouting sometime soon too.
