My youngest stepson signed his enlistment contract for the Navy. He leaves July 9 for Great Lakes for boot camp and A school for gas turbine engine repair. [Beer]

That rocks! Congrats!

Most of the guys I work with are former GSEs, GSMs or On-Wing support. Might have a different "rating" name now as a lot has changed since I was in, 20 years ago.

Thank him for his willingness to serve. Congratulations for raising a productive citizen.

July? Great Lakes should be warming up by then. [LOL]

That's when the THIN ICE signs go up.

I have people about 20 min from Glakes. If your kid needs anything, touch bases with me.

I grew up on the other side of that lake, I remember hitting the water in July and the surface temps were about 50* F. Or you could swim in the water next to Palisade's outlet pipe and it was about 80*.

He's already excited, his mom and dad were both Navy so he already has a list of his general orders, copy of the lyrics for the Navy song, ranks and insignia, etc. He figured he needed to carry on the military tradition through his mom's side of the family, her dad and uncles were Army in Vietnam, her grandfather was Army in WWII, and there is military service going back to the Civil War. Only bad thing for me is now I'll have 2 people to rub it in every year when Army gets crushed by Navy. [gohome]

Great Mistakes! I went to boot around the same time. I was there in august of '99. Still remember singing "Anchors Aweigh" going through that damn tunnel. Sounds like he will have a leg up on the other recruits with two Navy parents. He may be RPOC if he wants the responsibility (and the punishment lol).

Great opportunity!! Tell him to not sweat the small stuff and to understand their will be BS no matter what he does!

Congrats to him! I still remember all the things the Navy taught me in boot; how to fold skivvies precisely using a ball point pen, how to fold t-shirts precisely using a ball point pen, how to iron military creases into utilities and how to smuggle the little peanut butter cups back to my rack.

Providing he's not in aviation. The advancement is less than .5% of those testing for each P.O. ranking.

I didn't know that. Then again, I was speaking of opportunities such as a steady job, travel, learning skills that will help him in civilian life, and so on. :)

Aviation is bad but it wasn't that bad for most of the rates. The flyers, AW variants, have been considerably lower than the aviation maintenance rates. They only advanced two of 203 AWS2s to AWS1 this last go round.

He isn't going into aviation, even though he wanted to. He is a GSM from this https://www.navycs.com/navy-jobs/gas-turbine-systems.html

The last cycle for the GSM rate looks pretty damn good, I can't speak to trends though.
21% E5 to E6
34% E4 to E5
100% E3 to E4

Well he left last Thursday for boot at Great Lakes. [Sail2] We got a text on Friday that he was supposed to begin class this week right before they made him box up his cell phone. My wife is now waiting on a letter so she can send him some mail since they can't use the phone for the first 3 weeks. Forgot to update this with us in the middle of moving last week as well.

He is in my prayers. May God watch over and protect those who serve and protect us, especially your son as he enters this next great step in his life. May the peace and assurance of a merciful and grace filled Creator be a comfort to your son, you, and your wife.Be safe.

Thanks everyone! We got to sign him out for liberty on Saturday and Sunday after he checked into A school. Saturday we went down to Chicago and went to Sears Tower and the Navy pier and did a lake shore tour. He got his first taste of a real deep dish pizza and enjoyed the skyline from the river taxi. Sunday we took him to Michigan to visit with my family, which was a little boring for him outside of the card and money my grandmother gave him. He's already getting study materials from others in his A school that are a class ahead of him as he wants to qualify for C school right after. His first quarterdeck watch starts this evening, so that will be a change for him. I also noticed they have a lot more freedom than when I went through AIT in 98.

Most 'A' schools operate on a phased liberty system. When I was fresh out of boot in Aircrew school on phase 'A' I wasn't allowed to have any civvies or any electronics other than an alarm clock and digital watch.

He already has his cell phone and tablet. He can get an electronics chit to have a tv and game console in his room at any time. They just have the chit so the serial numbers and descriptions are documented in case of theft. Only restrictions are electronics can't be used during duty hours. So no phones or tablets at the school house, but once they've had dinner and are off duty they can use what ever they want. Not to mention the huge TV with cable, pool tables and 5 arcade games in the ship. I'm seriously jealous of what they get there.

Things have gotten much better than they were 8 years ago. Although there is something to be said about sneaking in a stripper to a run down barracks and hiding her in a locker during a surprise health and comfort. We didn't have big TVs but we did have that.
