Alright guys, who thinks their LinkedIn profile is hot shit?
I'm looking for A) Some good examples to spark some ideas for me, and B) Someone with some time on their hands to look over my profile and tell me what sucks.

Not sure if I should post the link here or do this via PM...

My LinkedIn profile could use some effort, too, but it's more a matter of "so many things, so little time."

As far as setting a tone or finding a voice goes, I find that the posts from folks at humanworkplace.com provide a healthy perspective in getting away from the drone tone and especially in not selling yourself short.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know anyone that ever got a good or solid lead from LinkedIn? I am just asking because it seems more of a social networking thing than a job lead thing.

Not mine, but here's one from one of the career counselors at CSU where I graduated from. Seems pretty good I suppose. https://www.linkedin.com/profile/view?id=42057987

I've been headhunted through LinkedIn.

I think it's a decent tool for personal "brand building." (Sorry for the jargony term [facepalm]) I don't use it AT ALL as typical social media, but for professional networking (keeping up on what people are doing or saying). I have a short paper in final prep, for example, that I will expose there.

I am a technologist working in ICT and also have a very modest role in the larger conversations on Internet governance and security/privacy, etc. I'm not going to post my profile on a public forum, but enough people here have met me, and if anyone works in the field and drops me a PM with your LinkedIn profile URL, I'll send you a connection request.

I'm in the process of updating mine and happy to link and discuss profiles with anyone here (just PM me). I have a lot (2K+ of contacts) of mainly IT contacts and many quality recruiters from large tech companies. A few of us have gotten together and are working with recruiters we know personally to punch up our profiles, not updated yet but hopefully in the next couple of weeks.

As for usefulness, I've been able to help a few contacts land good jobs and I got the job I'm in now using LinkedIn. I didn't use it in a typical fashion, I tracked down people in CO at the company I wanted to work for and reached out to them directly with my information. About a month later I started here and that was back in 2007.

I've been approached by recruiters based on my Linkedin account. Potential employers now ask for the link in their applications.

Many many many many people. I can name 20 people right now that got their current jobs from linked-in.

Got a contract gig from it which then turned into a GS level position at the USAF Academy.

ETA: Not sure it was my linkedin profile that really did it. I still had to send in a resume that was more complete as my profile was pretty meager.

It's a good resource for sure. I however don't use it because I don't want my "network" knowing when I'm looking for employment opportunities and such. I hate how people can add people on linkedin when they don't actually have it. I've gotten several emails from people I've worked with saying "So and So tried to add you on linkedin, sign up now!".

The construction management field has heated back up and in the past year ive had 3 different job offers from head hunters on linkdin. Its essentially an online resume so approach it that way. depending on your profession there maybe a ton of positions posted all in the same spot vs spending the time searching the companies websites and their job postings.

Like facebook, I post very limited information on them. I use them both for checking on other folks though and not really work related. If I were shopping for a job though, I'd put more on linked in.

I get headhunters and company recruiters thru there all the time. I even got a buddy of mine a very good job from a contact on the site. So I would say it is a useful tool if you are looking for a job or not. I hardly post any information on there, but my work history and contact information(second email) are listed there.

While I'm not job hunting, I try to keep mine updated and sort of like a resume. My past is there WRT education, service, training, and employment. I know that prospective clients often check out their contractors/vendors on linked in so I always just describe past (significant) projects as "an xx industry leader" blah blah blah fortune 50 blah blah blah xx project.

Linked In and personal social networks never mix. I don't add contacts unless I know them well enough that I can pick up the phone and chat with them. I don't accept unless I know you.

Here's mine. It's not perfect, but I think it's pretty darn good: http://www.linkedin.com/in/chadamberg/ (feel free to link if you wanna)

One thing a buddy did that's really nice and I'm planning on doing. Since at work I've done multiple projects, and it's hard to fit all that into one job description, I'm going to put each project as a separate project, and then link them to each job. Then the job description will be more generic and refer to the projects. Make sense?
