I'm sure some of you have heard of Jack Spirko and The Survival Podcast (http://www.thesurvivalpodcast.com/), maybe not. I'm a subscriber and listen whenever I'm driving. Good stuff - better than the shit on the radio, that's for sure. And no commercials. I've learned a lot.
Anyway, Jack has been doing something lately on Mondays called the "Survival Scenario". He lays out a scenario, then asks for you to submit responses to what you would do. The following Monday he gives his response to that scenario and then presents a new one. Pretty cool stuff to keep your mind working. He started to put these on YouTube. Here's the first one:

What I like about these scenarios is that are things that can actually happen, not "zombies are rambling over the hill toward your home" or "Russian forces are parachuting into your back yard" like Red Dawn or something. Just thought you might like these.

What to do beforehand? Have an understanding that virtually every store in a mall has a back door and a hallway for shipping / receiving. As far as I'm concerned, if there's a panic, the "employees only" sign is null and void.
1) Avoid the mall.
2)When entering a public venue, be aware of the exits, both marked and unmarked. Have a plan to get to an alternate exit if for some reason your preferred exit becomes untenable.
3)Be aware of the people around you, and what they're doing
4) Assess the situation, and take appropriate action (rapid exit, delayed exit, shelter in place, seek cover/concealment and respond to the threat, etc.)
The key for me is to have a plan in advance, that way you're not thinking about WHAT to do, you're only faced with HOW to accomplish it.

Started listening to his Pod cast about two months ago. Tons of info on real world things that you can actually use. His segments on small farming are pretty good too!

Similar to Fogger and Zombie
As a Firefighter the first thing you do before you go in anywhere you know other ways out. When inside know all other ways out, always be looking for another way out. 90% of people will use the same doors to exit that did to enter (The Station Nightclub fire, watch the video). Malls are a little different because they are so big, but know all the exits. Know not just the labeled exits but know how to get though walls to a safer area, don't be afraid to break some shit. This is pretty easy when needed. If you visit the Mills Mall in Lakewood understand that the inner ring of stores is supplied by tunnels under the mall and come up in the middle. If you cannot get to the outside, get to the inside service area and find a tunnel to get out.
To avoid the trample effect find reinforced cover, such as a pillar or other part of the structure. Do not use a kiosk in the middle, it will move. Get on the downwind (so to speak) side of the pillar, this can afford some protection.
Play the what if game. As a firefighter I would do this all the time with my crew (what if Casa Bontia is fire? If it 3am and there are no cars, that bitch is burning down). Play what if at different venues. A real fun one, Mile High or Pepsi Center.
This is the first time I've heard of this, so want to say "Thanks!"
Very cool stuff. I know I need to work on my situational awareness. One of the other things that I think should be taken care of before entering a mall or amusement park or any place along those lines is to make certain the child knows that if I say, "This is no joke," they know they'd better listen and obey. I've had situations when I was younger and babysitting that required rapid exits (no fires or whackos, thank god) and I had more than one child to corral. Unless you have a plan and make sure the kid understands they need to move when you say it, or you'll frogmarch them out of there, your job becomes 1000 times harder. Fortunately, back then I had a long reach and a healthy motivation to herd children where I needed them to go. :)

I started listening about a year ago. It took a bit to get over Jack's sort of, I don't know, arrogance maybe? But I have learned a ton and have some great plans for this spring for the garden and birds. Can't wait for spring!
The "What If... Game" is how I keep myself from entering a temporary vegitative state on most days. You can't play if you aren't paying attention and being observant.
Zombies are a euphemism for the unbeatable opponent; like time, or cancer, etc... In the end, death is coming for all of us, so you might as well do some living before it gets here.
Thanks for sharing the podcast. I'll give it a listen.

I listened to this podcast. Kind of fun to consider the scenario. Then he got into making bone broth or something which was okay, but then he got hysterical and started yelling into the mic when he got into Obama's free college thing and I just could not listen to him anymore. I'll stick to my Dave Ramsey podcast for now.

Yes, Jack discusses a wide variety of topics and does go off sometimes. There's almost 9 years worth of podcasts to sort through. I pick and choose the ones I'm interested in.

Yeah , I think he goes a lil over the top sometimes
(his rant about free college) but like you said there's a ton of info to learn. He has pretty decent guest speakers too. the guy from heirloom seeds, can't recall the actual name , gave a bunch of info on the appropriate zone planting of great vegetables.
I plan to get everything ready to start next spring.
Hopefully!!!!

One thing you could do to prepare for this scenario would be to make yourself strong enough that you could throw the 80lb kid on your back or over your shoulder and still move at a good pace.
Fit is good.
1) Avoid the mall.
Nuf said.
I was at the Stock Show on Saturday. Way too many people for my comfort. Caught myself playing "what if" a few times.
