It figures, I just took delivery of my PSS last week and today they announce a whole new line of smaller, lighter, quieter cans called the Ultra series. If the advertising is true, the new 7" can is both lighter and quieter than the old 9" design. Gonna need another suppressor soon...

Finally! Dragging my feet pays off for once!

Sorry you have to get a new can Tim.

I don't really mind, but it does seem a bit ironic. I need about 3 more cans anyway.

I'd sure like to get ears on the new stuff. If the 9" is significantly quieter, I'd consider it. My .260 is just on the edge of too loud to shoot safely without hearing protection with the current 9", 30P-1. It''s plenty quiet on my AR's, so it could just live on one of those.

I did the group buy last August on a 30CB9, just got my allocated serial number and form 3 to dealer in mid December. I would like to know where they took the weight out to reduce the CB9 by 30% while reducing noise. I thought it was light for the size before.

It was paid in full last August, backorder just took awhile.

Definitely like the 7 inch specs, at 11 ounces for direct thread and better noise suppression than the old 9, it would make a nice hunting can.

Call Ray. I am sure he would let you come up and shoot your stuff through a prototype.

+1

Then again, with wait times what they were last year... LOL.

Yep, paid for the "old" one, still waiting for the stamp. Dang-it!!!

Ooh! Ooh! Wait! Something just occurred to me! Since I've spent a lifetime enduring 4 years of Morse code in cheap govt. headsets, and 36 years of airplane/airport noise, and now a decade of firearms, my hearing is destroyed to a level that equated to AT LEAST the difference between the one I've bought, but not taken possession of yet, and the new super-duper one, so my experience will be the same, without the new price!

WooHoo! I win!

For those of you crying because you have the old model, just remember - there are quite a few of us out there that don't even own one and would kill to have that horribly heavy and noisy one that you currently own.

I understand, but its only 2-5 db, and some weight reduction, but hanging off of a 7-12 pound rifle, not really that big a deal.........latest and greatest in suppressors is OK, but most people will think you are "super cool" just to have one suppressor..

Be cool, enjoy the current model..........

Quick lesson is decibel math:

dB math is logarithmic.

2dB is a factor of approximately 1.75
5dB is a factor of approximately 3.2

So if the suppressor is 5dB more effective, that means the actual measured sound produced by the firearm is more than three times quieter!

If you say, "Oh, it's just 2 dB... that's not very significant," you need to check yourself before you wreck yourself! -2dB is 1.75 times quieter!

Enjoy your suppressors, folks. Hopefully someday I'll have one.

Who is the guy at the end of September that got paper approval in just 4 days? Whose flipper did he have to rub??

I've got to handle the Ultra series the other day. They are remarkably light! Excited to get a couple.

The dB math can be deceiving. A 3dB reduction is a 50% reduction, but can be difficult to detect that level of change with your ears.

If you have two noise sources, one at 135dB and one at 132dB, it would be very difficult to distinguish between the two, without instrumentation.

As far as who's flipper to rub.... [LOL]

ETA: Placing my order for a TBA Ultra-9 this week... then the wait.....

Probably a personal friend of Obama or Holder, maybe Al Sharpton or Michael Moore? Oh wait, they're against the public having these dangerous items so they can't have any paper in their names; it would be the bodyguards they hired ...

I've been looking at their ultra-5 and ultra-7 for an AK SBR project. The barrel is 11", so I'm trying to decide if the extra noise reduction is worth the extra length.

Not really.. When you consider the AK's gas system not to mention that bolt carrier noise, you'll be better off with their original unit and length.

"bolt carrier noise"...are you referring to the "traps on a CVN" type of bolt carrier noise?

I got out before CVN's. I was on a CVA.

Correct. I got to thinking about this again and did some research from the audio industry about perceived loudness levels.

A 3 db change is barely perceptible
A 5 db change is clearly perceptible
A 10 db change seems about twice as loud

I also went back an re-read Zak's descriptions. The claim is 4-5 db quieter across the line. The first time I looked, I read it as the 7" can being 4-5 db quieter than the old 9" can. I think that's wrong. I think the new 7" can will be 4-5 db quieter than the old 7" can. Further reading leads me to believe the new 7" will sound about the same as the old 9".

It's a real, noticeable, and measurable improvement, but it's not what I initially thought. I still want one...

Heard today the new Ultra's won't be available until June.
This is correct as production doesn't start on complete Ultra orders until April (at least this is the plan). If I understood my conversation with Ray correctly then everyone that ordered at SHOT will receive 1 Ultra of their choice first then TBAC will start filling complete orders.

With the 4-6 week average lead time on production for complete orders the stocking SOT's won't start to see them trickle in completed until somewhere June-July. That date most likely depends on the number of and quantities of the po's placed during that week.

Either way the new Ultra's contain TBAC's top notch quality while being noticeably lighter than before.
