Last thing anyone wants is to have some joker use your personal info to file for a fraudulent refund. So if you think you have a refund coming, file your taxes as soon as you get your required documents (W-2; 1099; etc). Condolences for those who have to wait for K-1s.
The gov really needs to do away with those dumb debit cards.
ETA: lol you win autocorrect.... PSA to PDA. Sigh.

Good idea.
There are ways to beat auto correct.

The irs isnt accepting returns until the 20th.
Crappy..... I guess it doesn't affect me since my employer doesn't distribute W2's until the last day of the month anyway.

And many people probably won't get their W-2s until the end of the month (I think the due date this year is Feb 2nd, since Jan 31st falls on a Saturday). Everybody's a bit different for when they can get their pertinent tax docs together to file their taxes.. some wait for 1099s or 1098s, but it just helps to get all the ducks in a row to be ready to file.

I stand corrected if due date is Feb 2nd, as my employer won't distribute any earlier than the last day.

Can anyone shed some light on the TurboTax vs accountant debate? The wife and I have always done TurboTax but is it worth going to an accountant?

From my very limited experience, unless you have a complicated situation, or lots of stuff to itemize, you are better off using turbo tax or similar programs.
Worthless, lying IRS is crying broke. Eff them, their mothers and the train they came in on.

I use TurboTax, might switch over to H&R Block next year.
Switched to H&R one year... Big mistake. It missed a lot of money I could have gotten back.

Depending on how long ago it was, how much money you think you missed, and how bored you are, you can file an amended return for that year for the lost refund amount. Might be worth taking a look into.
Used to use turbo and had a "software error" one year from there online system and they wouldn't honor the mistake and ended up costing me a lot of money so I use h&r block now , no issues (knocks on wood). My taxed aren't complicated enough to need a "tax person".

I feel pretty comfortable filling on April 15th.

I've always used turbotax and haven't really had a reason to complain yet.
In related news, what the hell is a tax refund? Why would you give the federal government an interest free loan for an entire year???
They can have my money when it's due, and not a minute before.

Exactly. If you change your withholding so you owe a small amount every year then noone will steal your id and your refund. Self reliance instead of waiting for the feds to fix it.
They hav known about this problem for years and don't fix it but target gun owners and the tea party!!

Here's another tax question that I've tried to research in the past but came up empty...how do you figure out what you should claim on your taxes so that you don't have a refund or a deficit at the end of the year (ideally anyways)?

In the old days, non electronic, they had a book I think called withholding tables. It would show how much is withheld from the check based on pay and claimed exemptions. check the IRS website.

You can pickup the 1040 booklet in post offices, libraries, etc etc. But here is the PDF copy. Match your NET income to the chart.
http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i1040tt.pdf
Or use one of a million calculators online, including IRS.gov, if your employer doesn't offer one.
Obviously, this only works in very simple tax situations.

Good PSA!
I have to wait until mid-Feb each year because Fidelity (IRA) insists they have an exemption from the Jan 30 deadline. I've called to challenge it and get nowhere.
Even though nothing there is taxable other than a small retail account I never touch, I always to want to make sure I have everything so I don't have to amend in case there are surprises (usually taxable interest).
