View Full Version : Shotgun pistol grip questions.
Searched and didn't find. So, mossberg 500 20" barrel. Is it legal to switch back and forth from a pistol grip to shoulder stock. I think it is, but I'd like some facts.
As long as overall length is greater than 26" you're good.

Barrel length of 18" or more, and overall length of 26" and you can switch back and forth...
if either number is shorter, it has to start as a pistol grip and stay a pistol grip- as I understand it.
Once it has a stock on it, it's a "long gun".

that's on a shorter than 18" bbl which is considered an AOW. Those stay pg. A basic OTC s/gun can be switched basck and forth to either bbl config with bbl length going no shorter than 18". Mossberg sold a 500AT Combo 12ga years ago. It came with pg, 18" bead sight bbl, standard wood butt stock AND 24" VR bbl. I purchased mine in 76 - 77 back in NY.

Jim, There's a "loophole" that allows for shorter barrels on PGO (Pistol Grip Only) shotguns without being NFA:

I don't need to go any shorter, I was just confused on the whole pistol/long gun fired from the shoulder thing. Still doesn't make sense, but as long as it's legal, I'm happy.

Yes their is, however keeping it legal w/out potential for dealing with uninformed LE is easier.

But not as fun. A few years back a guy on the way to the Cheyenne Wells machine gun shoot broke down, and a cop stopped to "help". He said it took a while. Most beat cops are not super up to speed on these things.
So I got a 20" barrel and cruiser pistol grip for my mossberg. Assembled it and put the cruiser grip on and can tell without firing it that the pistol grip without a stock is not for me. I don't wear trench coats and i like to hit what I'm shooting at. Looks like I'll be looking for an adjustable or possibly a folding stock soon.
I went through a pistol grip and folding/adjustable stock before I finally just put the OEM one back on. Everything else was just clumsy. I'll probably pick up one of the magpul ones here soon seeing as the LOP is my biggest complaint.
ZERO THEORY

Glad you learned quickly. I've never understood what practical purpose a stockless pistol grip scattergun serves outside of breaching doors.

Who does he or anyone need to Justify a purpose? I own NFA items, do i need to justify my need for them?
I fully support your rights to a shorty. I didn't like the feel or required shooting positions of the cruiser grip with no butt stok. Hip shooting isn't for me and I don't like the feel of holding it out there in front of my face. I can see a use, inside a home or hallway, it's just not for me. Jim, I would like to stop by and feel the usability of a folder before I decide to buy an adjustable or folder.
Hbar, you seem a little sensitive today. I don't think he was questioning your right to fast cars. I want a pair of boots like Jim west had. But I don't think I'll be needing to kick anybody with a knife today.
The coolness factor does have something to do with my decision here. Even though the stock stock is serviceable, I wanted a tacticool shotty so...
i have a model 500 with a pistol grip too. it isnt the best setup to shoot. BUT, it does have some uses. It fits in cabinets nice, and its nice for my wife to carry while she is pushing the stroller and need rattler protection.
I figured people were hinting once again that there should be any need to justify anything we do to anybody. Thats why freedom is so great,
even if there is no practical reason, you can have it or do it anyway.
Because I like it is a great reason to own something.
