View Full Version : New Police tool can see inside your house, without a warrant.

At least 50 U.S. law enforcement agencies have secretly equipped their officers with radar devices that allow them to effectively peer through the walls of houses to see whether anyone is inside, a practice raising new concerns about the extent of government surveillance.
Agents' use of the radars was largely unknown until December, when a federal appeals court in Denver said officers had used one (https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/1505137-12-6001.html) before they entered a house to arrest a man wanted for violating his parole. The judges expressed alarm that agents had used the new technology without a search warrant, warning that "the government's warrantless use of such a powerful tool to search inside homes poses grave Fourth Amendment questions.

Just saw this... Great. Just great. [Shake]
Just pick up some stealth paint from the hobby store and paint the inside of all your dry wall. Problem solved.
However, I think it'd be better to fill the walls with something that will cause 35 false positives instead. Although that would be more likely to get you shot.

I need to go buy more tin foil.
So they're going to watch me knock one out?

Tin foil might actually cause problems for it... Tin foil wallpaper to the rescue!

Foil clad foam insulation would do the same.

Any paint with metal filings mixed in will do it, too.

Lead-based paint?
I have a project coming up that will require entry into more than one room with "magic paint" and a dual escort.
I'm sure there are some MIL or ex-MIL here that know what what but this is just silly PCI security stuff.
And bad use of a new tool will result in judicial correction requiring warrants in the future.
There was a time when no court order was needed to use GPS trackers on vehicles. No longer true. They now require a search warrant, which is a much higher standard of judicial scrutiny.
As new devices become available, courts and legislatures adapt the application to fit within the confines of the Constitution. The system works, for the most part.
I've always been pissed that my house was sheathed with TermoPly, because I hate something structural that looks like foil covered cardboard. Maybe it's not so bad after all. No foil on the roof though, so they still can look down.

Better get a mirror above your bed asap.
Put that metal backing closest to the ceiling, so down and dirty.

I thought JeffCo has had a few cars equipped with these for a few years now. Maybe it's something else...but the thingy mounted on the roof looks just like that. Could be a thermal sensor they're using rather than radar. Or maybe I don't know what I'm talking about.

I'd like to see 'em try to see inside my dad's house. Brick veneer over concrete block construction, with lath and plaster walls, with expanded metal under the plaster to allow it to adhere. That house is built like the friggin Alamo.

This was one of my thoughts- besides the 1/2 mile driveway, my bottom floor is 12" steel reinforced concrete... they could scan thru a window I suppose, but I suspect they would use different tactics against someone in rural areas like where I live.
ETA, after reading the article, it looks like it doesn't provide images, just movement... so this is likely a knee-jerk reaction- there are likely much better ways for someone to invade your privacy.
